I know there is a filter on Dakka which replaces some words with "read the forum" rules and I was wondering if there is a list or something. I'm not familiar with what's okay and what's not for native speakers of English and I just wanted to which words can be used normaly and which not. Typing "wow, this is totally bad-@$$" usually looks pretty dumb.

erm, i would love to comment on this, but ive been told to tone my language down from time to time
mainly depends in what context you use the language.
in an argument, dont even think about it, not a good idea.
plenty of people will say a model looks bad ass, which to be honest is a compliment, and in no way offensive, so i think there is alot of leniency

The 'read the forum rules' replacement only really occur with really, really bad words, typically racist.
When it comes to regular swear words like fether or gak, our filter will automatically replace those words (as it did with what I typed) and we actually prefer that if you are going swear that you just type the regular word and let our filter change it rather than barely disguising the word by replacing one letter with a symbol, for example.
But beyond that, the use of swearing, even when filtered is also contextual. If you are insulting someone and swearing at the same time, that is generally going to be considered worse then just insulting them without swearing as the 'tone' will almost always come across as much more hostile.
On the other hand, saying something is bad-ass is never going to be a problem because that is a positive term and if we think the word itself is inappropriate our filter will remove it.
So in short:
1) We prefer that you just use the full swearword and let our filters take care of it rather than trying to thinly disguise a word yourself.
2) However, you shouldn't be swearing at all if you're angry or insulting someone as it will almost always result in a worse reprimand from moderators.
3) You should probably be double-checking your posts after you make them (or preview them before you post them) and if you see that one of your words has been replaced with 'please read the forum rules' then you most certainly should refrain from using that word again on this site.

Thanks Yak. I'm not planning to insult anyone, I was just interested in the details.
It's just that I heard once that Americans seem to be a bit more sensitive on the topic. I'm not talking about aynone in particular, that's just what I gathered from the media.

Interesting point. I think I agree, american people do tend to be more reserved when it comes to foul language.
Being British / European, I swear like a sailor
That being said, I don't have a problem with swearing at all. I mean, I toatlly agree with Dakka's policy on swearing, being there are many minors who frequent the site.
I heard tell of someone I know frequently using a particularly foul word around a young American girl (it's often referred to as the worst swear word, almost certainly a "forum rules" word), that eventually she actually slapped him in the face for being so 'rude'. He didn't see it coming, as in his circle (as in many social circles in the UK), swearing is pretty much used as punctuation.
Not useful information, just thought I'd chuck in 2p.

It is not my site, but if we are talking about this GW's policy is that if you are going to discuss their product they would appreciate that people keep the discussion civil. In exchange they are lenient towards using their trademarks and are generally easy going. It is free advertising, after all.

There are over 40,000 words in the English language. Feeling that you have to rely on the same six or seven to make a point only expresses your ignorance.
There was a study done at one time that showed that cursing actually occurs in a different part of the brain than normal speach. It is possible, when talking, for explitives to just slip out, especially in emotional situations.
However, the same is not true with typing. Typing, and writing, uses a different part of the brain entirely. Swear words don't just slip out while typing, you have to put them there explicitly. And, if you're doing that, take the extra second, and see if you can't find some other way of expressing yourself that doesn't rely on those same six or seven words.

Having looked into it before I can certainly back you point about neural centres, the areas used for speech and typing are indeed different, so I agree with your point about cursing on this site only being the result of a decision, not accident. Just so you know, I'm from a family with a long history in the Royal Navy, and I know a load more than six or seven "unacceptable" words

My only rule is not swearing in front of my mother. I've never done it. She wouldn't even mind, I just don't. I deal with a vast range of different customers in my job, and some of them pretty much expect you to swear in conversation. These sorts of people make great conversationalists, even if I can rarely relate to them. The rest of you witches can go feth youselves. Once I used the word "c-h-i-n-k" in a purely non-racist context... referring to a gap in armour, of course, and that was when I first discovered Dakka's autocensor. I couldn't figure out what I'd done wrong for a while.

I kicked a kid out of my class once, and he called me that on his way out the door.
I laughed afterwards. Poor kid couldn't tell a Chinese guy from a Filipino; it's no wonder
he was so messed up.

I can tell Koreans, Chinese and Japanese apart by language, and usually accent... I'm constantly on the phone to people in Malaysia and the Phillipines for my job as well, so I've got them down... but for the sake of clarity, and because I'm being a bit of a smartarse, what is the basic difference between a Chinese guy and a Filipino guy? As a teacher, you surely educated him with that point afterward?

Crap is tame enough that you hear it used on kids TV sometimes (I know I've heard it in cartoons on Nickelodeon in the past), so it doesnt get filtered.

Is there anyway to change whatever the forum converts to 'gak' with any word that is not gak. It just really disrupts the flow and parsing of a post for me. Plus it feels like mis-spelled leetspeak which is something I'm glad DakkaDakka frowns upon.

gak was used as it is the word used in a lot of dan abnett's novels to replace sh*t, so we figured that people would be used to reading it that way and would not have too much trouble stopping to wonder what the word means. If you have a better word replacement that fits the huge range of contexts required then we are fully open to suggestions.

I swear a lot in conversation, and I sorta try to type the same way I would talk. I rarely use it as an insult or anything, just for emphasis. Anytime I feel like someone on DakkaDakka is annoying me these days I take a break from the site.
I'm not fond of the word censor, but I respect site policy. (I recently found out that an unmoderated forum I read has a no swearing rule made clear by a post by the admin years ago. I've cut my swearing down since.)
I do like gak and feth though, in an odd way. Seems to me I can type what I want, and I'm more relaxed.
