Does the "always strike 1st rule" confered to all high elves overide other armies men that have "always strike 1st" or do they cancel out and let it go to initiative?

no if 2 units have it they strike at initiative order

yes, as i collect high elves i watch in amusment as my swordmasters cut down the whole front rank of their unit not allowing them another attack, i watch and laugh...

i needed a topic to talk about and i wondered if anyone else hates high elves for being upper class speedy twits.

no, swordmaster will kick anyones butts becasue of ASF and great weapons help cut vamps to pieces

i would rather face swordmasters than phoenix guard, i don't know why but in past games i have done better against swordmasters.

Wraiths will utterly hump Swordmasters. They physically cannot hurt you, and there is a fair chance of them fleeing from Terror in the first place.

Far from guaranteed of course, but you can always soften them up with a few screeches from the Banshee to begin with, or allocate attacks to the Banner Bearer, who having taken the Magic Banner won't have a great deal of protection.

And for added fun, you can always throw something extra tough like, a Black Coach into the Swordmaster flank when you charge with the Wraiths.

Impact Hits *should* make up for your lack of static Res somewhat, and the Coach ought to be tough enough to handle any desultory attacks back, the impact hits having taken out most of the fighting rank.

Sure, it's a lot of points to take out one unit, but a fair fight is of course, a fools fight.

Against High Elves, I would always take the Bloodline that allows you all spells from one Lore, and go with Lore of Death.

That then gives you reliable access to Doom and Darkness, dropping their Ld down to a paltry 5. More than likely to be hitting on a 6 due to fear after that, and a well timed exposure to Terror...well, chances are they will flee. Combined with a flying Terror Causer, a casting of Van Hels, you stand an excellent chance of taking out an entire unit with throwing a single punch.

All you need to do is to position your Terror Causing flier (Terror Bloodline, and a HEllsteed is good for this, cheapish as well) near enough to the enemy in the movement phase (within 2" is best if poss) cast Doom and Darkness on the unit to be charged, then Van Hels. The enemy unit then takes, and ideally fails it's Terror test, and it's fleeing.

What works even better is a movement spell that allows the units full move. 2D6 flee rarely outstrips a fliers pace!

Unless the player does the smart thing and gives the champion the amulet of light. then the whole unit has magic attacks. If you are going to play against undead, one of your champions has to have this item!!!

Phoenix Guard are better IMO, because they will actually see combat. Against an army that has even a little shooting the SwordMasters will get shot to pieces.

vamps can't shoot so i'm kinda screwed.

yep against undead i'd take hard hitting FAST things like swordmaster, whereas against a shooty army i would take the nice phoenix guard

they may be fast but the are a lot more points in comparison to a huge unit of zombies that can **** off the swordmasters for the entire game.
