I often play games with some poeple, and I wonder if what they're doing is entirely legal. This thread is for poeple who want to know if something is legal, and they don't want to buy the codex.
The biggy for me is this: An ork player has a unit of 30 ork boys. He gets a painboy and cyborks for the whole unit. Is this legal? And do the cyborks really give a 5+ invulnerable save for only 5 points a boy?

He can do that if the Painboy happens to be Mad Doc Grotsnik, then again, he has to abide by the "one scalpal short of a medpack" rule, that forces you to always move towards the closest enemy unit.

None of these things were mentioned...
Also, what is Mad Doc Grotsnik? Is it like a painboy upgrade or a character? He just gets a plain old painboy and he moves his unit wherever he wants.

For this very reason, I purchased a full set of codices for my local gaming group. Too often when I first started this hobby, I would get a player who would "teach" us to play and only until I too serious effort to ready every page of every current rulebook did I realize he didn't know squat or was trying to cheat. When in doubt, borrow their book and take a look for yourself.
As for the question of the Cyborks, if he fielded Mad Doc Grotsnik, then yes, any unit in the army may upgrade to Cybork Bodies for 5+ points a model.

Me: "Ok so what is a ram, lets look at the rules."
Rulebook: "A ram is a special kind of tank shock"
You: "So it's a tank shock until it hits a vehicle, and then it's a ram, not a tank shock, and then it goes back to being a tank shock later!"
Me: "Yeah it doesn't really say any of that in here, how about we just play by what's written in here?" |

He's cheating if it's not Grotsnik, as only Nobz and Flash Gitz have access to Painboyz otherwise.

Yes, he is an HQ Special Character. You are also allowed to look at your opponent's roster. That's a good place to start if you are ever in doubt.

From what the OP says, he's cheating either way - if it's not Grotsnik, they can't get the upgrades, and if it IS Grotsnik, he doesn't get the freedom of movement.

What do you mean by "freedom of movement"? If you are referring to his "One Scalpel Short of a Medpack" rule, that only applies to himself and units he is attached to. Purchasing Cybork bodies with him in the army is not limited to units he is a part of. Cheaper option is still a KFF, totally off topic.

long story short:
only possible way to have a painboy in a unit of boyz is to take mad dok grotsnik as a HQ choice.
boyz can then have the cyborks at 5 points each.
the unit follows the "One Scalpel Short of a Medpack" rule.

This is certainly illegal. I stopped using Grotsnik after losing two games because I had to move off objectives to engage units (one of which was a drop pod!).

That made me laugh pretty hard
I play against the same guy, so im curious about the validity of this as well. Also, not sure about this, but it has been loosley inferred in some of the above posts that the 5 points for cybork thing is only available when Grotsnick is taken as HQ. Is this true? or is Cybork available for 5 pts (or otherwise) period?
(also this player has a thing about people looking through his codex, which also happens to be the only one around... so we really have no way to validate any of his clams... )
thanks

As was mentioned above, only Nobz and Flash Gitz can have painboyz. They provide cybork 5 points per model. Now then, most HQ choices have the option for cybork bodies too, but that is 10 points. Grotsnik allows any model to have cybork for 5 points.

If this guy is acting so secretly about his list and codex, then this should have shot up a "red flag" that something was not right. He should be more than glad to share the "only" source to the Orcs 'dex. One of you should buy it and bust him on his shady playing and most of all, call him out on it.

N.B.
Shelling out 5 pts per standard Boy, just to give a 5+ Invulnerable is a waste.
Now, stuff like Lootas, probably worth it. But not boyz.
Nor does my namesake give them Cybork Bodies just by joining the unit!

So your opponent doesn't like anyone looking at his lis or his codex? Sounds like someone is trying to pull a fast one. My recommendation? Buy or borrow an Ork codex, at the beginning of your next game, if he won't show you his list, sit there and go over with him each unit in his army adding up the points and writing it down, then reference that any time he tries to do something like pull Cybork bodies out of thin air........

A dark time has begun for the Imperium, the tithes can not keep up with the balloon payments and the Imperial Palace and its contents, including the Golden Throne, have fallen into foreclosure. It's not like this game isn't insanely complex, and people could have more than one reason for not letting their fellow gamers get their cheato-stained fingers all over their one and only copy of the ork 'dex. Lord knows I've run into enough people I didn't feel comfortable sharing a book with, or anywhere near my models. Didn't mean I was cheating!
