hi guys.
i'm looking to do a leman russ conversion but i thought it would be good ask for the opinions of people who know alot more than me.

so the ideas i'm looking at are either an armored car mounting a battle cannon or a tank similar to the russ but with a less cartoon like hull turret and gun so i think i would. lengthen the hull make the gun smaller and probably make something completely different for the turret.

any ideas guys.

ps i'm making an army to fight in urban environments so i think the armored car is a better idea and i'm considering the uses of the chamira and if it were an armored car i think the look of the 'alvis saladin' is what id base it on and the usa's grant tank which is quite cool because it is design to mount another gun like so if i were to use it then i would mount the lass cannon in the lower gun mount.

(ive tried spell checking most of this and forgive my punctuation im dyslexic lol)

I have no problem with the idea of a wheeled Leman Russ. But changing tracks to wheels is not an easy task, especially with hull sides like the Russ, and with all the other modifications, you'll hardly use anything from the Russ kit. And if you want the vehicle to look like traditional IG, then you're kind of stuck with the Russ and Chimera as a conversion base.

Unless you want a more primitive or looted look? - in which case you could try some other races' vehicles as a conversion base.

Here's my 'armoured car' battlewagon, made from the fronts of 2 battlewagon kits:

but of course that's a bit easier for Orks, it wouldn't suit a traditional IG army

I've actually been wanting to do a M3 Lee style Russ. BC/Vanq in the hull, Heavy Bolter Turret and then a cupola Stubber. Could also make the turret an Autocannon, which is basically what it was on the M3 and use it with "House Rules"

thanks you 2
but which of the ideas do you think is best i might even do both one day.
that is a cool idea to use a different vehicle but which one would you recommend

I remember seeing this a while ago, and was luck enough to find in on google. It's Owen Rees' Tahnellian Imperial guard, which is a drop troop IG army.

I think these count as chimeras, but you can see that the model uses the chimera hull and scraps the actual tread pieces, and looks pretty good at that.

Hope that helps

I'd go with the M3 Grant idea.. looks more fun to do.
The LR chassis is quite narrow, so I reckon that you'd need to widen it so that you could get that hull gun in without it looking "cramped".
Got a modded LR in my gallery if that'll help with ideas.
The armoured car would be better suited to an urban theme though.. And the suggestion of using an Ork trukk as a base is good.

Hey thats pretty darn close to what I was going to suggest for a wheeled version. Nice find, AND it looks easy as hell to build.

Cool stuff, some more ideas for you to mull over:

They're early WiP's, and I'll try to get pictures of them in their current (almost done) state.

Armoured cars are light recon vehicles though. I can just about see using them as Chimeras, but MBTs?

Not convinced. Armoured cars are just not heavy enough.

hey, it could be underequipped IG. especially for desert troops or something?

In that case you're looking at light armour support, rather than a small and cute MBT (in my view). I'm not trying to stop a modelling experiment, but I just don't see a wheeled armoured car being much like an MBT.

no you are right and i am still considering things like where to mount a lascanon but do you have any ways you could help me?

The US LAV series of vehicles might do. Multi-wheeled light armoured vehicles that could be upgunned.

If you go through historical urban engagements, then a light, maneuverable vehicle isn't necessarily that useful. Its much more likely that some PBI with a big toy might be hiding around somewhere and then lots of armour and big guns are waaaaay more important. Speed and maneuverability help in big spaces, where you can dodge stuff. In a closed in environment there is less of a benefit.

However I am all about modified Russes(check my dakka gallery), so I look forward to whatever you come up with

nice find, lunahound, I haven't seen that before - I don't like the sponsons but otherwise it's great, the hull reversal has been done very nicely, and would definitely suit a M3 Grant-type Russ conversion.

Urban Guard, those two six wheeled pics you posted are the inspiration for my arbites chimera, currently very wip

It's pretty much the same size as a standard chimera, a little taller because of the turret. With the big wheels though I could see it carrying something a little heavier than an autocannon.

Think it hase been drawn in some CAD program and machine made..

This one is also pretty cool!

Ummm isn't that is one of those models that GW would sue the creator of? There are a couple of garage kits floating around where people remolded GW bits and produced kits around the incorporation of those parts. I think this is one of those.

That's the "Golgotha" pattern Leman russ tank made by a guy called Velard.

He did, iirc, get a C&D order from GW.

Leman Russ tanks built backwards.

It's the same chasis, only plasticard and stuff is used to build the front on the rear section.

Well no its not a leman russ chassi as it has more of an resemblance to the Land raider in the way it looks but its smaler.

Well, yes it is, the simple fact they turned the original Leman Russ tracks backwads and added a bit of extra length to the center does not change the fact that with the details included it is Leman Russ tank Treads turned backwards, elongated and detailed EXACTLY the same down to the cooling vents, tension wheel piston, and stowage door.

I'm confused - from comparing it to a Russ in front of me, this conversion is not a standard Russ hull. I thought perhaps it might be a Forgeworld variant, but apparently not, judging from what i see on the Forgeworld website.

So I guess it really is a really really good conversion of a Russ, extending the hull with the aid of a second Russ kit - how they did it without any joins showing, I don't know!

Don't worry, Urban Guard, reversing a normal Russ would be much easier and still look nearly as cool...
