You have been warned.
Greetings all!
I figure its about time that I start a thread for the shooters on Dakka Dakka to post anything shooting related on it. Post your favorite shooter, or your current rebuilding project. Into reloading? Post your setup with pro's and cons! Have a LEGIT/NON TROLL question about shooting? Lets hear it!
To start...
Im currently trying to re-mil spec a 1903A3 that someone had "Sporterized" back in the 70's. So far its comming along great, except that I cant find a matching upper wood barrel cover thats near the same color as my stock. The one that was shipped with it cracked in transit and the replacement that they sent me wansnt even close to the same color. Been stuck on this for almost 4 months now.. my winter project is now becomming a spring project. Im going to cheat a little and keep the match grade trigger that someone stuck on it. I have the origional but after playing around with both of em Ive fallen in love with the current trigger and just cant give it up.
Just upgraded my lead melter from propane to a 5 lb electric. It will take longer, but if all goes well cost will be cut in half. Also one of my good friends (who was the man that really taught me to shoot when I was just a wee kid) just passed away and I was able to get most of his reloading gear. His Kids that never really spoke to him while he was alive took all the guns and sadly I fear that most are going to be pawned away for easy cash. RIP Krupp!
My Hornady 7.62x39 Dies just came in the mail last week. Havent tinkered with them yet cause im still got a few thousand 30-06 to finish loading before I move on. I cant wait until I can find bulk Mil Surp powder again. I only have about 8lbs left. I also really really need a progressive stand.

I will not argue whether gun is useful or not , but i'll just say one simple fact.
The stronger the weapon is ( even for self protection ) the less chance it is for either side to walk out alive.

Well,I'll tenetivelly agree with half of your last statement,in as much as it's probly a good chance someone may not walk out alive.
I myself own several handguns and a Mossberg 500 shotgun,my girlfriend,myself and our 2 children do not live in the "safest" neighborhood,and having the ability to protect my family just makes me sleep a bit better.

Oh, Death was never enemy of ours!
We laughed at him, we leagued with him, old chum.
No soldier's paid to kick against His powers.
We laughed - knowing that better men would come,
And greater wars: when each proud fighter brags
He wars on Death, for lives; not men, for flags. |

Don't mind at all,as of now I own a Rossi .357,a Taurus PT-92,an old Colt 1911 and the Mossberg 500,I like both the Rossi & the Colt for knock down power & off course you cant top shotguns for home defence,the Taurus I bought on a whim.
Also to answer another question that was dericted @ me by another poster,no my children do not know were my guns are kept,and more so I take extreme care to safetly store all wepons & ammo,if by some chance my children located my guns,the worse they could do is bludgeon themselves,as I keep all magazines& ammo in a lock box,my childen are the most precious thing in the world to me and I would never be foolish enough to allow any oversight on my part to endanger them.

@Rat:
Your in Canada right? That kinda throws a wrench into things cause I know nothing about Canada and its laws about gun sales ect ect. I will however look around for you.
@Typeline: 21.
@Fitzz:
Not a bad collection. I Keep a Walther P99 In my lockbox in my Jeep Wrangler at all times while I carry a Taurus ultralight .38+P snub nozed wheelgun loaded with semi-wadcutters on me at all times. If all else fails my quick access safe is in my bedroom and I keep a Modified Rem 870 loaded inside it (next to 30+ other guns, most safe babies sadly) and a XDM9.
Still kicking myself in the pants for selling my Spaz-12. Nothing said Boomstick like that bad boy. Too bad parts are getting stupid hard to come by.
I choose 9mm over the popular .40 S&W or .45 Auto cause if I ever have to use it to shoot someone, a jury could rule for excessive force just cause I used a large caliber round. The safe thing to do is find out what the local police are useing and use it as a base guideline. Cant rule for excessive force if its the same round the local po po use. And around these parts they shoot .40 S&W, .223 mini 14's, and carry Mossberg 500's/Rem 870.

@ jd400,I've heard good things about the Taurus ultralight .38,but never belived a .38 would have suficent stopping power.
Also I see your point as to were a jury may rule excessive force due to a larger caliber round,however I'm fairly certian a large amount of local law enforcement here in GA. carry .40 S&W,however I'm not sure so I'll look into it,of course with the PT-92 and the Mossberg I'm probly on the "safe side"..still won't hurt to check.

Gun laws vary state to state. In Va, I believe it is 18 to get a concealed carry permit, and you have to have either a 3 day gun safety class or your dd214 if you had military service. Then there is a small fee ($35 last time I checked) for the background check.
I have a 9mm Beretta, Smith and Wesson .38 snub nose, and an old .410. I am eventually planning on getting an M1 Garand and an M14. I went with the Beretta because that was the sidearm I carried in the USMC. The .38 was from my dad when he passed away, and the .410 was my 12th birthday present from my dad.

@ FITZZ:
The .38 has planty of stopping power if used correctly and with the right ammunition its down right great. The humble .38 is considered by many to be THE ccw caliber of choice. Granted its will never win you any awards for distance shooting, and you only have 4-7 rounds pending the firearm, but that just means you have to make your hits count.
Unlike my XDM9, which has 19+1 in it...
Just food for thought id like to point the following out..
Harold Fish VS Arizon, 2006:
Long story short, he was a retired school teacher who was out hiking on a remote trail when a homeless man who had a history of mental instability attacked him. He shot him dead in self defence but was convicted of second degree murder cause the jury considered " stressing Fish overreacted through choosing to use the increased stopping power of 10 mm hollow point bullets..."
Lame I know, but it sadly still sets a precident and is worth considering.

We need a gun licence which you can get when your 16 to use a gun and you have to be 18 (which is in 2 months which is why I am starting to look for a good rifle to buy myself as a birthday present) to buy a gun. For sale I beleive it has to be non-automatic and if it is semi automatic it can only have a clip of 4 or 5. anything larger than a .45 cal that is not a muzzle loader is prohibited. Because a lee enfield is under .45 and is a bolt action its cool to purchase. As for bringing into the country I think it has to be registered for its groove markings and manufacturing number.

You are repairing it to it's state before it was demilled and sold out of military service. The US at least does minor damage to any heavy weapons they're selling on the civilian market. As a civilian, to possess certain weapons you must either be licensed or the item must be irreparably damaged (in theory) as to render it inoperable (cutting holes in the high pressure area of a howitzer, for example). In reality however, there is no such thing as irreparable damage if someone has parts and determination. And the Internet. You'd be amazed what you can buy on here.
As for me, I have a Arisaka Typel 38, near mint condition with chrysanthemum stamps, a .69 Prussian modified to percussion in 1828, a M1842 Springfield, a 1795 Light Dragoon pistol, an M-1 Garand, an 1813 Sutton, and a six pound howitzer (black powder on a naval carriage).

The gun was never de-milled, worse happened to it. Somebody decided that it would make a great "sporter" rifle and completly butchered it.

Sportsterizing is where you cut up a gun and add aftermarket parts to it. For example, if I were to take my Arisaka, file all the markings off it, retool the action to accept a standard 308 round and replace the barrel, then strip of the iron sites and add a scope, and removed the steel butcap and replace it with a more 'modern' rubberized shock pad, I'd have sportsterized it. And shaved about 3-4 zeroes off it's resale value.
The worst case of this I've ever seen was someone taking a 1795 Springfield and converting it to a percussion shotgun. It's value dropped by $50,000. I cried.
I file it under stupid things people do in their ignorance.
