Anyone else find this hard to believe?

Britain is the most violent country in Europe, with records showing that the UK fares worse than South Africa and the US. Based on reports released by the European Commission and United Nations, the number of recorded violent attacks soared by 77 per cent in Britain in the decade following the Labour Party's election in 1997, the Mail online reported Thursday.

In the UK, there are 2,034 offences per 100,000 people, way ahead of second-placed Austria with a rate of 1,677, it said. The US has a violence rate of 466 crimes per 100,000 residents, Canada 935, Australia 92 and South Africa 1,609, the report said.

The Opposition Conservative Party, which is way ahead of the ruling Labour in opinion polls, attacked the government for its failur to make the country safe for the common man. "This is a damning indictment of this government's comprehensive failure over more than a decade to tackle the deep rooted social problems in our society, and the knock on effect on crime and anti-social behaviour," said Chris Grayling, the Shadow Home Secretary.

http://www.indianexpress.com/news/UK-most-violent-in-Europe--worse-than-S-Africa--US--report/484185

Analysis of figures from the European Commission showed a 77 per cent increase in murders, robberies, assaults and sexual offences in the UK since Labour came to power.

The total number of violent offences recorded compared to population is higher than any other country in Europe, as well as America, Canada, Australia and South Africa.

Opposition leaders said the disclosures were a "damning indictment" of the Government's failure to tackle deep-rooted social problems.

The figures combined crime statistics for England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

The UK had a greater number of murders in 2007 than any other EU country – 927 – and at a relative rate higher than most western European neighbours, including France, Germany, Italy and Spain.

It also recorded the fifth highest robbery rate in the EU, and the highest absolute number of burglaries, with double the number of offences recorded in Germany and France.

Overall, 5.4 million crimes were recorded in the UK in 2007 - more than 10 a minute - second only to Sweden.

Chris Grayling, shadow home secretary, said: "This is a real damning indictment of this government's comprehensive failure over more than a decade to tackle the deep rooted social problems in our society, and the knock-on effect on crime and anti-social behaviour.

"We're now on our fourth Home Secretary in this parliament, and all we are getting is a rehash of old initiatives that didn't work the first time round. More than ever Britain needs a change of direction."

The figures were sourced from Eurostat, the European Commission's database of statistics. They are gathered using official sources in the countries concerned such as the national statistics office, the national prison administration, ministries of the interior or justice, and police.

A breakdown of the statistics, which were compiled into league tables by the Conservatives, revealed that violent crime in the UK had increased from 652,974 offences in 1998 to more than 1.15 million crimes in 2007.

It means there are over 2,000 crimes recorded per 100,000 population in the UK, making it the most violent place in Europe.

Austria is second, with a rate of 1,677 per 100,000 people, followed by Sweden, Belgium, Finland and Holland.

By comparison, America has an estimated rate of 466 violent crimes per 100,000 population.

France recorded 324,765 violent crimes in 2007 – a 67 per cent increase in the past decade – at a rate of 504 per 100,000 population.

The Home Office says there has been a downtrend in overall violence for the past decade.

But last October it emerged that levels of violent crime in England and Wales had been underestimated for more than a decade because of a blunder in recording methods.

Ministers admitted that some police forces had not been recording offences of grievous bodily harm with intent as serious violent crime. When the offences were included violent crime figures immediately increased by a fifth.

Separate figures disclosed in May showed that the number of people requiring hospital treatment after being seriously hurt in street fights or assaults has risen 50 per cent in five years.

More than 20 people a day were taken to hospital accident and emergency departments in England last year after being hit, kicked, scratched or bitten. Alcohol is blamed as a factor in half of the incidents and raises further questions over 24-hour drinking.

Researchers admit that comparisons of crime data between countries must be viewed with caution because of differing criminal justice systems and how crimes are reported and measured.

A Home Office spokesperson said: “These figures are misleading. Levels of police recorded crime statistics from different countries are simply not comparable since they are affected by many factors, for example the recording of violent crime in other countries may not include behaviour that we would categorise as violent crime.

“Violent crime in England and Wales has fallen by almost a half since a peak in 1995 but we are not complacent and know there is still work to do. “

This report actually makes the US look good.

Of course, i'm sure there is a difference in the kind and severity of violent crimes committed in each state mentioned.

this is from the telegraphs coverage of the same issue, gives more detail...

The mere fact that the report comes from the Daily Mail immediately makes me suspicious of its accuracy.

its not from the daily mail, they're just the ones who broke it. all the papers have covered it. The figures come from the european commison and the united nations.

eh? wats the sarcasm for? of course that doesn't make it true I'm as skeptical as you are. no need to be childish.

The dubious part of the figures is whether one country class violent crimes differently to another. If the mail had come up with the figures I wouldn't have bothered posting this.

It's not sarcasm.

If the data has been properly collected and organised in a professional manner, as one would expect from the EU Commission and UN, then I expect it's true.

I agree with you that the devil is in the detail of how violent crimes are classified from one country to another.

For instance, I am surprised to see that Sweden is even more violent than the UK; possibly the Swedes class jay-walking as violence or something.

I'll have to look into the report and study the methodology.

Ok misunderstood you.

The statement... "The UK had a greater number of murders in 2007 than any other EU country" is the one thing which interests me as I can't imagine how 'murder' rather than 'violent crime', would have the same issue as being classified differently by each country.

Hard to believe? No.
We are much smaller than the US so any violence that does occur surely bumps the statistics up more then the same incident in the US.

I think it is not hard to believe the results becuase the UK is probably the country with the best recorded results.

Most countries these crimes are never reported, and the culprits never found.

In America almost all the rich people get off with good lawyers.

Some facts for you;
If you draw a line across a map of the states from any point on the coast to any other point on another coast at least 9 people have been murdered on that line.
In SA there are on average more than 50 murders a day.
So I, too, am sceptical.

How do they RECORD these?
And it really depends on WHO was overseeing the investigation (of no. of murders).

Mabye in Britain there are violent attacks becuase the "poshness" is wearing off with adverse affects.
But there are more murders in America becauase when THEY have tantrums, they've also got a goddamn gun!!!

Can I not have a Concealed Curry instead. To go with my Emergency Pint? Got to go out prepared you know! I mean, I could be 5 minutes from the nearest pub and in dire need of a Pint.

But I call testicles on this report. I've never been beaten up since I left school 13 years ago, and even then I'm not sure the odd playground stomping really counts.

Though now people mention it, I seem to recall that in the UK at least, using the threat of violence (like 'Gimme your booze or I'll kick your head in' for instance) classifies as a violent crime, whether or not any fisticuffs eventually occured. So when you take in the threat of violence, then yeah, I've been a victim and a perprator both. It's the same with knife and gun crime. If you threaten to use a blade or a shooter, regardless of whether you are packing or not, it gets filed as a knife or gun being involved.

Yes statistics are lies wrapped in numbers. You have to look at the sources and comparables before their veracity can be made.

And for the record Concealed Curry is truly dangerous. Even North Korea doesn't mess with concealed curry, and they're crazy enough to do anything.

One of my workmates punched a guy in the jaw for calling him a Scottish c**t on a zebra crossing.

That's a violent crime right there, except there were no police present and none of the passers-by dared to attempt a citizen's arrest.
