I just stopped in for a few minutes to have a look at the different armies - I didn't wanna compete. I saw two Mech-Eldar, one 'Nid swarm, four Space Marine, one Necron and ALL of the rest of the armies (ten, maybe?) were different Guard-related armies. Two looked to be armored companies (all I saw were Russes) and the rest were mech-heavy forces, many with two Vendetta gunships (Vendetta? Can't remember the name of the flyer - I think they're called Vendettas.) Only one included Sisters - the rest were exclusively Guard.

Something I found interesting was that almost all of the people competing weren't our regular Thursday-and-Saturday gamers - they were from out of town.

What was your event like?

Lots of Eldar and Guard at ours. Most of the rest were CSM.

I had never seen most of the guys playing before.

Out of 20 players, IIRC, there were 2 IG armies.

No earth shattering, thought provoking quote. I'm just someone who was introduced to 40K in the late 80's and it's become a lifelong hobby.

Our store had
1 Chaos Demons
2 Chaos Marines
2 Vulkan Marines
1 Mech Marines
2 Space Wolves
1 Dark Angels
1 Blood Angels
2 Ork horde
1 IG tank spam
1 general IG
1 Necron

decent mix, but a few armies were missing, eldar dark eldar, nids, templars, sisters (a few people had inquistor allies)

the necron player had a big upset with his 3 monolith, 1 C'tan list that phased at like 17... a few broken rules here and there and he took the cake.

THE HORUS HERESY: Emprah: Hours, go reconquer the galaxy so there can be a new golden age. Horus: But I should be Emprah, bawwwwww! Emprah: Magnus, stop it with the sorcery. Magnus: But I know what's best, bawwwwww! Emprah: Horus, tell Russ to bring Magnus to me because I said so. Horus: Emprah wants you to kill Magnus because he said so. Russ: Fine. Emprah's always right. Plus Ole Red has already been denounced as a traitor and I never liked him anyway. Russ: You're about to die, cyclops! Magnus: O noes! Tzeentch, I choose you! Bawwwww! Russ: Ah well. Now to go kill Horus. Russ: Rowboat, how have you not been doing anything? Guilliman: . . . I've been writing a book. Russ: Sigh. Let's go. Guilliman: And I fought the Word Bearers! Horus: Oh shi--Spess Puppies a'comin? Abbadon: And the Ultramarines, sir. Horus: Who? Anyway, this looks bad. *enter Sanguinis* What are you doing here? Come to join me? Sanguinius: *throws self on Horus's power claws* Alas, I am undone! When you play Castlevania, remember me! *enter Emprah* Emprah: Horus! So my favorite son killed my favorite daughter! Horus: What about the Lion? Emprah: Never liked her. Horus: No one does. Now prepare to die! *mortally wounds Emprah*Emprah: Au contraire, you dick. *kills Horus* Dorn: Okay, now I just plug this into this and . . . okay, it works! Emprah? Hellooooo? Jonson: I did nothing! Guilliman: I did more nothing that you! Jonson: Nuh-uh. I was the most worthless! Guilliman: Have you read my book? Dorn: No one likes that book. Khan: C'mon guys. It's not that bad. Dorn: I guess not. Russ: You all suck. Ima go bring the Emprah back to life.

@Demogerg

Surprised there were no Tau there. Tau, imo, are the "spoilers" in the current Meta. With the ability to eat armor like candy, they easily destroy mech lists that are so popular right now.

Busy somewhere, airin' out the skin jobs.

Is it really much of a surprise that there were so many guard?

It IS the newest codex after all. A lot of band wagoneers havent jumped to the next big thing yet.

It also doesnt hurt that the guard codex is DECENT...people have been waiting a while for a decent guard dex.

...I dont really think its all that surprising.

I play at a small LGS so we only eight spots to register but 7 out of the 8 players showed.

1st: Chaos Demons
2nd: Orks
3rd: Necrons
4th: Eldar
5th: Space Marines
tied 6th: Space Marines, Imperial Guard

It's cool to see the resurgence of popularity of Imperial Guard, and Orks to a lesser extent. It actually matches the background to have most of the battles between these armies, with the occasional other stuff thrown in.

It really surprised me because we only have two guard players in our group of "regulars" - both are old-style Guard gun-lines. I didn't recognize most of the people who showed up to play on Saturday - I guess they came from far and wide!

Looking over the the forum's I have seen few guard players that are advancing or that even played. Seems still tons of ork, edar, chaos and marines (mostly vulkan). I was expecting more guard qualifiers. At first, and somewhat limited glance, I would say the guard are not to be as feared as originally expected.

We had

2 Mech Vet IG, including me, I finished first with 67pts
1 ork
1 mech eldar
3 mech chaos
3 vanilla marines
1 mech tau
1 nidzilla
1 blood angels
3 Salamanders

The other Mech Vet player finished 5th but was running a list that was not optimized to face lots of terminators and ran into two salamander lists with massed assault terminators.

I think that IG in general and Mech Vet in particular are very effective armies but also not easy armies to run. They have major weaknesess that can be exploited by experienced opponents and do not match up well with seer council eldar.

I see eldar jet council as the power player this year, and the results from round one have done nothing to change my mind on that.

I play at a small flgs, and we had 5 of the original 12 flake out at the last second. Of those who showed:

1x Daemon (yours truly)
2x Mech Salamanders (one in green, one mysteriously in Blood Ravens colors)
1x Mech Vanilla Marines
1x Mech Chaos
1x Mech Tau
1x Necrons

There were more landraiders than players, oddly enough.

I went to spectate and provide moral support to my roommate. I didn't take a lot of notes on army composition, so I can't say how many of the marines armies were Vulkan armies (at least 3, I think), but out of a field of 28, I think there were 6-7 chaos marines (which swept the top 3 by a comfortable margin), 1 chaos demons, 3 dark angels (2 deathwing and a dual wing), 1 space wolves, NO guard, 2 eldar (neither really hard-mech lists), 2 tau, 2 necron, 2 'nid, and the rest vanilla marines. I don't *think* I noticed any =I= allies. I might have missed an odd squad of GK somewhere.

Thanks in no small part to the Deathwings, I think our Land Raiderlayer ratio may have spiked over 1, too.

We had 24 players the max that I guess either GW allows or the max our store decided to run, either way we had over 30 people show up, so there were sad faces.

I played duel lash, I recall seeing

Tau
Eldar - footslogging
Eldar - Mech (1st place)
IG - Hybrid foot/mech (1 of the top 8 players)
Mech Orks
Horde Orks - (2nd place)
2 Chaos Demons (both in the top 8)
Black Templar (top 8)
Chaos Marines - Duel Lash (This was me, I got 3rd place, I have to brush up against Demons)
Landraider Marines
Vulcan Marines x 2

Not sure what else. Looked like a good mixture though, I didn't see any army that was overplayed.

Lots of space marines, several ork players, a couple eldar, a token necron player, couple of tyranids...I think chaos had one army.

*EDIT* Oh, and mechanized IG made a presence as well.

I did not play but I watched quite a bit of the action.

3 Guard armies. Two of which had 2 valks and a bunch of russes and vets in chimeras. And they both had inquisitors. One was a WH inq and the other was a DH inq. I didn't look closely at the 3rd Guard army.

3 Marine armies. Blood angles. A drop pod army. And an army with a lot of terminators.

2 Ork armies. 1 green tide. And a 4 battle wagon with nob bikers army.

1 Necron, 1 eldar, 1 Chaos Daemon, 1 Dark Eldar.

The eldar army was 2 seer councils, war walkers, warp spiders, guardian jetbikers and a falcon full of fire dragons. This army won with 67 points.

It makes sense really. Not everyone's FLGS hosts the first round of 'Ard Boyz.

There was only one guard player at my store, although he did have 9 Leman Russes.
