Hi all at Dakka Dakka from the WARP team

We are creating a War40K total conversion for Fallout 3, thought many of you might be interested.

A little prelude-

Warhammer 40K Auspices of the Righteous Project

This modification is unofficial and unendorsed by Games Workshop. It is made using the intellectual property owned by Games Workshop without permission, in accordance to the rules set out here. This modification is non-commerical, with the sole purpose that fans of the GW setting can enjoy exploring it in a new format.

WHAT:
A focussed semi-Total Conversion, epic in scope but achievable in practice. Play as a tribal adolescent selected for the trial to become a Space Marine. Climb through the ranks, eventually standing in the First Company of the Black Templar.

WHEN:
The mod will be released episodically. Teaser trailer due for release in August '09. Teaser playable release ("Custer's Last Stand") for 3rd quarter '09.

HOW:
The first release will be a teaser, a standalone mission from the main story arc. This mission is codenamed "Custer's Last Stand", because, who doesnt love cliches? Anyone who has read White Dwarf for years may understand the basis of the mission, as it pays homage to an enjoyable battle report.

The main story arc will be somewhat more linear than FO3, and because of that (hopefully) somewhat more engaging and cinematic. The three planned episodes are entitled "Aspiration", "Initiation", "Ascension" and involve Mystery, Betrayal, Treachery, and perhaps even Love. And of course, big square jawed fellows in Power Armour stomping the filthy Xenos and Heretics!

Work is in Progress
Planned Content-
Epic story arc involving multiple combatants, allied, enemy, and of suspicious motivation
Vastly reworked class based level-up system
Tiered perk system - do you want to fight a long range, close up or mix and match?
Totally overhauled damage system that can accurately model power armour
Awesome wargear - canon perfect weaponry and equipment. Many many new meshes and textures
New architecture and world objects - buildings, drop pods, clutter and anything else you can think of
Exciting unique bosses - special effects, unique meshes, unique wargear
A more cinematic and absorbing story based experience
Fully voice acted
ORKS!

Examples:

Team Members

Lord Honk - Adeptus Mechanicus (meshes, textures) - on hiatus
Psymple Jester - Adeptus Mechanicus (textures), Adeptus Astronomica (GECK work)
SoulmanZ - Administratum (Story, Lexicanum, organisation-ish), Adeptus Astronomica (scripting, GECK work, character design, dialogue, voice acting commander, cinematics)

Seriously? Space Marines? We don't need more, we need less! It would be interesting for the most part to see some portion of the fanbase try to break out of the 'logical conclusion' for once.

It's interesting, and looks like a lot of work.

Adrift within the vortex of my imagination.

Space Marines work for a computer RPG as you get a logical power progression in keeping with a heroic character from a 1st person shooter. The sort of stuff the Lone Wanderer gets up to would require more than human ability anyway. With Space Marines the hit point and heal system for heroes is more easily explained away.
Besides the Lone Wanderer would definately qualify for testing for the Astartes, possibly depending on faction choices.

I am all for this.

As for the orks, basing the model on human psysiology, even super mutant human is off, the ork needs to be slightly shorter and a lot wider. I wonder if the model can simply be stretched in 3d. You might be better off choosing traitors as antagonists at first and feed in other races later. Better to do orks right in the second or third episode than wrong on the first.

n'oublie jamais - It appears I now have to highlight this again.

It is by tea alone I set my mind in motion. By the juice of the brew my thoughts aquire speed, my mind becomes strained, the strain becomes a warning. It is by tea alone I set my mind in motion.

verm - pretty hard to write a game from the perspective of a tyranid! we will be releasing ALL our work to the community in resource format, so if somebody wants to make a Ork based total conversion, they will be able to

i personally dont want to write 10,000 lines of "wot yous want?" dialogue

if it is any consolation, the player will have more 'choice' than the average marine, the story will play through multiple different takes on their militaristic outlook

orlanth - that ork is a custom model, made by a genius. Its not a human model, nor is it supermutant. It is far broader, more muscled and overall more viscious. However, due to the limitations of what bethesda gives us, it is based on the human skeleton. I think it looks fantastic though, kinda like a realistic ork rather than the exaggerated style of TT

That is just opinion though

Will be keeping you all up to date with developments, as mentioned we will have a cinematic trailer available soon

oh, and thanks for the welcome Deff Dread!

It sounds good, but I have to agree, the ork looks all wrong. he's too tall and too thin, and his arms hang funny. he looks like a D&D orc, or maybe a tall WoW orc, but he just looks wrong for a 40K setting, his lower jaw should be sharper too, it feels too round. The Commissar and Space marine look AWESOME however. I've been hoping to see something like this mod pretty much since i started playing 40K. It'd be nice to see the Tau involved. I unfortunately won;t be Dling it for awhile, since i don't ahve a computer capeable of running Fallout 3 yet (360 yay!), but when I do, you can bet i'll give this a whirl.

silver - cheers. character design is part of my designation, i like him too! he isnt quite the harda*s he looks, got a heart of gold he 'as

lyons - thanks as well. the armour is readily available, made by cerberos, who isnt part of WARP, but has allowed us it for our use. he has made an enormous number of armours, particularly the grey knights look awesome. but if you meant the character, again thanks. There will be marines of all types. We have young and brash ones, softly spoken veterans, sarcastic battle weary warriors, flame weilding psychos, shadowy mysterious ones, and all your other favourites!

BrookM wrote:I've checked out the link and I'm sorry to say that you guys still have a long, long way to go.

i guess you are welcome to be sorry about whatever you want! if you read anything at the link you would know we are releasing episodically, thus the whole game doesnt have to be finished for you guys and gals to get your grubby mitts on it. I have stated a playable release 3rd quarter of this year

if you mean for the complete game, well of course we do! genius doesnt happen overnight

and if you were just being derogatory, well, i guess i dont need to say anything

About to eat your Avatar...

I would be interested to know how you are planning to deal with any IP issues, especially since GW has started to get heavily into video games and Vassal40k has been dissolved.

Looks okay overall, I would be interested to see it completed, it looks like quite an undertaking to hold together on such a large team (volunteers right?).

I'm not sure if they can/will do anything if you are not making money from it.

Otherwise I hate to think what they will think if they ever do an image search on deviantART for warhammer drawings :O

From what I recall from other mods for other games (HL1 & HL2, BF etc.) most creators shoot GW a friendly email telling them what they are up to and usually GW just gives them an okay as long as no money is made off their IP.

I would think that GW could stand to lose sales of their video games because of this freeware mod, it is quite reasonable to think along those lines. Like I said Vassal40k finally threw the towel in recently, even though GW never brought a law-suit against them (as far as I know) they were sending quite a few cease and desist letters.

Looks pretty awesome, do you still need any art assistance on the project? I'm sure the amount you will need is pretty huge.

Thanks taco, metallifan and daedalus. Glad to have the support

Shattered lineage has always looked good, but it appears to the untrained eye to have lain dormant a lot. I have high hopes though. Certainly when we release our resources I hope some help them out

Daedalus, we could always use more hands, but in truth we have a lot of stuff complete already. By art assistance do you mean paintings, meshing, texturing or something else?

We do have a need for traditional art, in the painting/drawing sense, for splash screens, title screens and loading screens. I have put calls out on several artist boards but no love yet, I suspect we will have more interest when the teaser trailer is released, which looks like next few weeks. Its hard for people not involved in modding to see how much we have done already from the few pics we leak out

As for in game art, meshing is locked down right now. Texturing could always use a hand, as well as uv-unwrapping. Music is locked down too

So if art or texturing appeals to anyone here, feel free to pm me and we can hook something up

Onward!

Haha - the board told me to add capitals! I hate capitals, but I love it!

Edit: looked in your gallery, you obviously mean drawn/painted art. Yes we do have a need. Black Templar, ork and space/battlecruiser themed art is what is needed now. We do also need an imposing title screen, which should probably be BT focussed
Thanks for the interest

I got my laptop today, so i'm happy to say as soon as i get fallout 3 installed i'll be waiting intently for this.

Edit: Actually, i'm kind of wondering now do you get companions or are you going solo for the entire game? Either way it looks awesome, i'm just wondering.

Thanks Daedalus, email out.

iamthecougar - hopefully you wont be waiting very long! As for the question of companions, I have set the story up to include as much variety in gameplay as possible. There will be squad based sections, areas solo or almost solo, areas with a companion or two, areas where you command a squad (or more).

We have an amazing squad control system courtesy of our scripting genius talkie toaster, it really has to be seen to be believed, although it wont take part in the teaser release because ... well, because it doesnt make sense to me for a neophyte to order marines around!

hope that answers your question
