This is a pretty bad move, i know i wont be ordering from them anymore if they start using chinese factories ... not even counting the tacit endorsement of human rights violations, theres the fact that youll probably get poisoned just holding them while painting em.

But yea, coulda swore i read this somewhere and was wondering if it was true.

i remember reading about it here.

just think, you'll get to work with lead again, just like in the days of yore (or, a while back, depending on the models you have)

I believe it was mentioned in the Financial results thread that Forgeworld have been outsourcing to China to keep up with demand.

According to one of the regulars on WargamerAU, it's been going on for quite a while. She's a regular FW customer, and while chatting on the phone to sort out an order a while back (I think at least 6 months ago) the staff member she was talking to supposedly made a comment about having to wait for a particular item to come in from China.

In the financial report they said that they had already set up a manufacturing cell in Shanghai.

We have improved our resin manufacturing processes in Nottingham and implemented a new resin cell in
Shanghai to manage the significantly higher levels of sales growth we have been experiencing from Forge World.

I'm guessing that getting this online was the cause of last year's unusually long order waits.

as long as they stay hitler-esque regarding quality control it could be a good move.
Less money spent on production = more money spent on R&D and Design.

HIGHLY highly unlikely to result in a price drop though

Quality assurance meaning that what comes out of the mold actually looks like whats pictured on their website.
Its amazing some of the excuses that come up when whats delivered looks nothing like whats detailed in the work order.

Hmm.... I've had a lot of stuff come from Forge World and never had the problems that some of you seem to, the occasional missing bit being the exception.

A guy on another forum had a pic of a FW dread he ordered and a chunk of flash of the torso was around half the size of the torso itself.

People's experiances of Forgeworld do vary don't they? Some people have had nothing but good service, but others have huge delays, receive irrepairably damaged goods, incomplete orders and the customer service has been a devil to get the situation resolved.

See the worst I've had is warping . . . oh the fun using warm water to manipulate the model . . . or base in case of the Heirodrule . . . massive base, that was warped . . . annoying as anything really.

But I must say FW are good at sending you free stuff if you complain about not getting the right stuff or whatever.

Is it remotely possible that this is a good thing? I am not sure how it would mean disaster for the customers. So much stuff is produced in China I can't even tell the difference most of the time.

I suppose you could have a argument in the human rights department, but if you just want your models I doubt it will mean much to you at all.

I predict that production will go up, but customer satisfaction will plummet. That phone calls and emails of unsatisfied customers will rain in and then one of three things will happen. 1) Their will be a price increase to satisfy the overhead costs of constantly giving out replacements. -or- 2) Their will be a price increase to close the monetary gap as the customer base rapidly drops off due to poor quality products and the diminishing reputation of FW. 3) Both number one and two.

I wouldn't make the mistake of thinking that because it's done in China it's going to be done badly.

it means I wouldn't buy FW any more, but in fairness I didn't before due to previous customer difficulties with them.

Yeah, now you're not only dealing with the horrible service, but there's a chance you could be getting even shittier casts.

At Forgeworld prices and its history of being made in the UK; being outsourced to China isn't a good thing especially since we won't be getting a price drop.

Sure, quality may not necessarily drop however having a premium wargaming product made by exploited labor doesn't sit well with a lot of people. Its like the idea of a Chinese made Porsche or Ferrari; somewhat hurts the image and prestige and potentially the quality.

This is certainly an issue, paying premium prices when they are doing it on the cheap abroad isn't on. I think one reason people tolerate the current prices are because it's a bunch of british employees doing it in their kitchen.

Point of fact - according to GW, FW is already partially outsourced to China. Perhaps that is why the stuff we ordered a few months ago arrived in California in almost no time flat...

Quality was excellent, "Class 1" production quality. The Repressor top fit *perfectly* on the Rhino, no warping and minimal flash.

Also, when you talk about "exploited labor", it would warm my heart to learn that all of the FW stuff from the UK was produced by underfed orphans in unlit factories working 20 hours a day, bringing back the grimdark of Dickens' Victorian England.

Also, when you talk about a Chinese-made Porsche or Ferrari, for the same price in USD / Euros, the Chinese could easily make the same product at a far higher level of build quality that what is produced in Germany or especially Italy.

Same, I'm really opposing this FW China stuff. I might stop buying FW if they do that.
