This is a little challenge I thought of: Using any Codex, create any infantry unit which has the highest points cost. I would say the 10 Vanguard with Thunder-Hammers and Storm Shields, which IIRC is about 900 points.

Whats the most expensive unit you can think of?

Wolf Guard Bodyguard in Terminator Armor

10 Wolf Guard, (power armor) Thunder hammers, Stormshields, Bikes, Meltabombs, one gets MotW on top of all this, and one gets the Arjac upgrade

1175 points
unless you want to get picky about arjac being in TDA, then its 1095 points without him

or you could do all terminators with TH/SS and 2 cyclones, meltabombs, MOTW, and Arjac, 875 points.

EDIT* I actually kinda like the idea of 10 TH/SS termies with 2 cyclones... lawl. 690 points.

THE HORUS HERESY: Emprah: Hours, go reconquer the galaxy so there can be a new golden age. Horus: But I should be Emprah, bawwwwww! Emprah: Magnus, stop it with the sorcery. Magnus: But I know what's best, bawwwwww! Emprah: Horus, tell Russ to bring Magnus to me because I said so. Horus: Emprah wants you to kill Magnus because he said so. Russ: Fine. Russ: Ah well. Now to go kill Horus. Russ: Rowboat, how have you not been doing anything? Guilliman: . . . I've been writing a book. Russ: Sigh. Let's go. Guilliman: And I fought the Word Bearers! Horus: Oh shi--Spess Puppies a'comin? Abbadon: And the Ultramarines, sir. Horus: Who? Anyway, this looks bad. *enter Sanguinis* What are you doing here? Come to join me? Sanguinius: *throws self on Horus's power claws* Alas, I am undone! When you play Castlevania, remember me! *enter Emprah* Emprah: Horus! So my favorite son killed my favorite daughter! Horus: What about the Lion? Emprah: Never liked her. Horus: No one does. Now prepare to die! *mortally wounds Emprah*Emprah: Au contraire, you dick. *kills Horus* Dorn: Okay, now I just plug this into this and . . . okay, it works! Emprah? Hellooooo? Jonson: I did nothing! Guilliman: I did more nothing that you! Jonson: Nuh-uh. I was the most worthless! Guilliman: Have you read my book? Dorn: No one likes that book. Khan: C'mon guys. It's not that bad. Dorn: I guess not. Russ: You all suck. Ima go bring the Emprah back to life.

The cost for Infantry Platoons could be even higher if you gave every single squad possible a Chimera.

If Army Builder put the points right, a maxed out Infantry Platoon with Chimeras and the most expensive upgrades runs 2805 points for one platoon.

EDIT: Oops forgot a heavy flamer instead of a standard. 2810

I make the infantry platoon 2795 (and I've also learned that I've got too much time on my hands. hey, it's china, youtube's blocked.)

Pretty sure I've done it right - the most expensive character is chenkov, because he lets you blow 75 points on SITNW (so 125 points total) but that means you can't spend the 30 points you usually could kitting out your platoon leader.

All krak grenades+meltabombs where possible.
All 6 commissars got plasma pistol, power weapon/fist
All 6 chimeras got all possible upgrades (they're 120 pts each!)
Gave the PCS men a medipack, heavy flamer, 2 plasma guns. (you can only buy 4 upgrades, remember
Infantry squads, sergeants kitted with plasma and power weapons, las/plasma, voxes
HWSs, lascannons
SWSs, demo charges

So 2795 points is the max (I'm pretty damn sure my numbers are right) but it can deploy as up to 20 seperate units, so not sure if that's quite a fair candidate.

Eldar Corsairs: 4000 pts
Imperial Guard: 4000 pts

Corregidor 700 pts

Nobz can't go bigger than 10 men. However, if you really wanted to bump up their cost again, you could give em all bosspoles and stikkbomms.

How about the most expensive unit to buy?

10 Ogryns - $200

If you count Platoons, I'd say they'd probably win. Just including Infantry Squads and Conscripts, you're dealing with $198

5 Heavy Weapons Squads are going to run you $175

The Command Squad is $25.

And then you'd still have to deal with making the 2 Special Weapons Squads.

$398 for an incomplete (and transport-less) troops choice.

Of course, this only applies if you're stupid and use everything for its intended purpose (there are much cheaper ways of making a Command Squad, etc.).

I'm wondering if I can make a single mob of Nobz cost over 1000 points.

10 Nobz, all on warbikes, with stikkbombs, 5 power klaws, 4 big choppas, Cybork, armor, but even then I can only make it cost around 805 points (that's a stretch) so I think the vanguard vets have it.

Not like nob bikers are any cheeper to buy though, you basicly have to make them out of the Nobz and Warbiker kits, nobz kit is pretty good, @$25 or so, but warbikers are around $50, so 10 of them would be $225, it'd be cheaper just to buy the megaforce!

An Honour guard squad maxes out at 710, plus 115 for a maxed-out razorback.

Nobs run 875 plus 290pt battlewagon, or just 1125 for a maxed unit of nob bikers. (you can buy the painboy equipment right?)

Vanguard veterans come up at 825 with jumppacks, or 725 + 115 for a razorback. (the sergeant can pay full price for his thunderhammer, if he really wants to)

That's all the candidates I have the numbers for. I'm sure space wolves can do some weird stuff. The 3.5 chaos codex would have dominated though. You could have a unit of 20 chosen champions, all of whom could select from the armoury. Oh, and the old ulthwe craftworld rules let you make an unlimited size seer council.

Current most expensive unit: Nob bikers
Current most expensive Force organisation choice: IG platoon.

Imperial Guard: 4000 pts

Once the nobz are on bikes they are no longer infantry.

Nobz on bikes are the most expensive ork unit possible (maxed at around 1067 pts).

The painboy can only have bike, stikkbomms, cybork body and grot orderly. i.e., the upgrades available to the entire mob.

Most rank-and-file units have no size limit in WHFB.

People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made.

This works if we include the Apocalypse expansion's formations/datasheets. However, the challenge is an infantry unit using any codex.

So do the IG have it then?

I should mention, although its no match for an infantry platoon, a 5-man IG Company Command squad, with nork dedogg and a couple of non-FOC ICs included can hit around 1500 points, if I remember correctly.

Creed, Keel, Nork Dedogg, Medic, bloke with Plasmagun, entire squad with krak nades and carapace armour, Lord commisar, techpriest w/out retinue, fully upgraded chimera... er... *shakes fist at codex not being to hand*

I collect:
Guard - 2k of mostly infantry
DA - 2k of deathwing, 2k of other bits (no vehicles)
Sisters - mostly converted/proxy because I'm waiting for therange to go plastic.
Tau - 2k with no riptides because I can.
