2009 Chicago Golden Demon Winners! Do not know what used guys think, but the overall quality of some of the winners looked a bit weak. It's just as well the Slayer Sword Winner was a clear favourite blowing the competition clearly out of the water as no one seemed to come close to his standard and looks like he was pretty unique with his blending and highlighting.

Personally I preferred the Plague Marines to the Elf, a very smooth and clean paint job. Yellow Arwen worthy of mention too, yellow is a very difficult colour to work with and that is rich in tone with beautiful highlighting and shading.

So it looks like you're in agreement overall a lot of the models painting just looked a bit rough nothing seems smooth

Only new names to me are newbloodz. Not sure why a clean-style nurgle marine wins.

Photos can ruin otherwise astounding paint jobs. It's the bane of model photography.

Chicago was a big upset as several of the golds from what I have been read werent even painted by the winner of that model thus switching everything around. Second I was their and ahve to say I was walking through the golden demon line to look and was so disapointed in a lot of the models that I just left the line thinking man I waited 20minutes to see this. Didnt even finish.

Listen, my children, as I pass onto you the truth behind Willy Wonka and his factory. For every wonka bar ever created in existance, Mr. Wonka sacraficed a single Oompa Loompa to the god of chocolate, Hearshys. Then, he drank the blood of the fallen orange men because he fed them a constant supply of sugary chocolate so they all became diabetic and had creamy, sweet-tasting blood that willy could put into each and every Wonka bar. That is the REAL story behind willy wonka's Slaughter House!

Painted figures rarely look smooth at that level of magnification though, the Plague Marines just look lovely.

The daemonette looks great.

Some very nice stuff.

No offense to the painter of the Gold single 40k mini but my cynic gland went into overdrive at a Space Wolf mini winning...

It is a very good paint job, nonetheless that was just my cynicism at a space wolf model winning with the codex just released...

Im with you guys. Most of those were very nice, but some of those deffinetly werent gold demon quality. I remember looking at the old WDs when they would post the GD winners when I was a kid, and they were just amazing looking.
Im sad tho, that my painting is almost as good as the young bloodz lol

How are two ork warboss guys "large monsters" again?

Call me unappreciative here, but I hate the uber-realistic painting style. It just seems like such a waste as these creatures aren't real and the fluff isn't even well written to warrant their pretend existence. I recognize the skill (and years of practice and hard work) behind it, but it just doesn't float my boat. I'd much rather see bright colors, cartoonish, over the top elements than CSI in the far future.

The Slayer Sword winner was well chosen. That high elf hero was fantastic, leagues ahead of everything else.

I wouldn't say some of them are Golden Demon standard but that may be because of the photography. I particularly like the GK Dread and the yellow Arwen but my favourite is the Tyrannid diorama.

The diorama is pretty great, as is yellow Arwen. But that elf hero is damn near perfect.

The problem with cartoony is people don't relate to it well, and art that people can relate to is art that people will appreciate more.

The realisitc look just grabs a larger audience.

Just check the French GD winners from 2-3 years ago and it's still very easy to see why they have much better quality.

Still haven't seen much better than Jen Hailey.

I find it humorous that GMM Studios Alpha level tanks that he mass produces practically, are far superior to the vehicle entries.

Some of that looks very rough for a Golden Demon. Also, how does an Ork Pilot on a wooden block count as a large monster?

What are you talking about? They're Space Marines, which are heroic. They need to be able to do all the heroic stuff. They fight aliens and don't afraid of anything. -Orkeosarus

Maybe the block is actually the dreaded Shrieking Cuboid of Mazzellain Primus, and the ork is just his prey?

Yikes. Some nice entries, but the overall quality does seem waaaay lower than other years/regions.

My favorites:
Slaan that took bronze, would've like to see it up close
Yellow Arwen
IG diorama. Not necessarily even the paintjob, but the setup and conversions.

I am not fond of the Clean Plague Marines, but I'll certainly give that painter something for a different take on them.

I disagree with what people are saying about cartoony vs. realistic. Realistic takes a lot more skill for many reasons but mainly that you can pull whatever out of your rear end and it will make sense in a cartoony world. When you paint realistically you have to take so much into consideration or it wont look realistic. Anyone who has ever been a serious 2d artist knows this. It is actually very very hard to get a drawing to look like a photograph and sometimes it is impossible because in our mind we assume everything in a photo is true, so somethings that are *real* and pass in a photo wont in a drawing even if copied *perfectly.* My .02.

But yes the entries puzzled me a bit. I think the PMs are struggling to figure out if they want to be clean and cartoonish or realistic and gritty. It's like a time warp back to when NMM was "in."

Also ironic that the thumbnail of the gold vehicle shows the driver unfinished face. Nice tank elsewhere though.

Slayer sword was really good and congrats to that guy he deserved it.
