I love GW (err, not that much) for all the fluff it has made and the great game of Warhammer 40,000 that has excited thousands of players...its just that its way too damn expensive. A good 1500 point army with all that is needed for painting and rules costs over $1000 (nz, it converts to around 500 euros). I don't have that money. I'm just 16, I don't work yet (I'm hoping to get a summer job)...I have on other hand renewed my passion for a special card game...Yu-Gi-Oh. For those who know...you'll probably understand that when the Chaos decks were slaughtered, all these new supports and S/traps, new monsters (Zombies rock, Warrior-Tool rule!), new strategies and top-meta decks (now, I have learnt Lightsworn, Blackwing, another tuner thingy) are not that locked and set and have large spaces for variation, I pretty sure gotta be excited.
There's my dilemma is...
Expensive, fluffy, deep game such as 40k...
Cheap, exciting, immensly varied game such as Yu-Gi-Oh...
If someone has expriences of both, please share!

You can always build up slowly with 40K. You don't need to bring more than about 500 points out with you in order to get a game. There will always be someone with 2000 points who wants a match with someone with 1500 points (etc) who would not mind an extra player to even the points. Or even just playing lots of 500 point games. And whilst it is still expensive to even have that much, you can speard the cost, and only get a new unit once you have painted up the previous one, or buy second hand (most of my models are second hand, which is probably over about 10,000 points worth of stuff). Edit: and if you do this you can play the "cheaper" game at the same time (I have no idea what it is or how much it costs, but you might be able to afford to get a small gaming force in both games and decide which you like best).

Yeah, I'd hve to agree with MK2 on this - slow build-up. A lot depends on which army you want to collect too - if it's orks (wooo!) or Space Marines (booo!), then AOBR is a good first move, assuming you don't already have it. You could get it for Xmas. Plus these two races are the easiest to find second-hand (and usually quite cheap) on Ebay, etc.
But any other race? It's gonna be fairly tough for you unfortunately mate. But don't give up - you can get awesome deals on Ebay sometimes!

Since you're a young one I'd be hesitant to invest a lot of money in either hobby but from the language you used I'd go for the card game since you seem more excited about it.
If you do want to build on 40k I'd suggest buying stuff second hand from your LGS or online if you can convince your parents. You can buy GW stuff for a fraction of the price if you search well enough.

Hello only other competitive Yu-Gi-Oh! player on Dakka! I 'm not alone now! Ok, warrior-toolboxes are still nerfed by only having 1 RotA, but Rat-Box might be feasible if you can make it quick enough. I loved a couple formats ago when Zombies were big because between End of Anubis and Vanity's Fiend *nothing* would ever happen Anyway, go Yu-Gi-Oh! and only get what you need for decks. 40 SUCKS for competitive play, and you can always build it up piece by piece in the downtime. I picked up 40k until the Yugi format got to something I would be interested in (which it so is now). I've gottena couple of top 8s at Regionals, so I at least know halfway what I'm talking about. Just do a squad or two of 40k at a time if you want to mess with it and take it as an extremely casual game. If you ever want to play over t3h intrawebz, lemme know! I could use a good duel.

The difference is that Yugi has several decks that can compete for meta positions, even with just a decent side deck. I beat the #2 ranked North American Duelist at one point with a deck that would have cost around 60 bucks at the time, and outplaced the #3 and 4 at an event with a $100 deck. Yes, I'm awesome There are hella expensive cards out there, but there are other builds that work well too. Edit: I also have 14 Black belts in various martial arts and personally trained Brock Lesner. I realized how "internet tough guy" the first part of my post sounded so maybe it will sound less like I'm making crap up if I post something more ridiculous afterward.

I say go with GW. Build up slowly. It also gives you the time you need to use proxies to find out which army you like, which builds you prefer etc.
It's a much deeper game and there's the potential to get a lot more out of it.
When I first started as a kid I would only get stuff on birthdays, xmas and whenever I saw my grandma. Kissing her ass always used to be the best way to get 40k stuff ("but I really really need it to make my army better" - you get the picture).
Good luck

YAhooooo! YGO player on Dakka! Elite to boot!
I think I'll start (re-start, I left when it all started stagnating with my least favourite decks on top of the meta ie. Cheesy chaos and spandex warrior return-scam) with Yu-gi-oh, as even the latest 40-decks come at only $25NZ while the starter force for CSM is $178...I'll do both. Thanks Everyone!
PS for Cannerus_the_unbearable:
Wouwch you hit the US n°2! You must be one helluva dueller! What did you do to beat him, I mean did you cookie-cut him or what?! Oh, and I'm sorry for the duel you're anticipating, but I live in NZ, don't have a single card YET, and way not on your level. I'm just on the 3-card chains and decks with a driving force of a round 20 cards, not your usual elite 100% effective top tier deck construction!

I used to play Yu-Gi-Oh! I managed to make an alright deck I liked then stopped adding to it around the time the Yugi and Seto structure decks came out or that boxed ste that had Dark Magician Girl in it; I'm not sure which. I won a lot of games with it, but it eventually became boring and I managed to find fewer and fewer matches.
I originally started 40k about 4 years ago, I was 16 then as well. I found 4th to be boring and the game to be way too expensive so I stopped playing until the beginning of this year. I decided to go with Yu-Gi-Oh! instead, but after finding so few games I decided to make a school wide tournament. I retired from the game later in the year, still the best at it in the school. My friends had moved on from Yu-Gi-Oh! a bit before that and managed to convince me to start playing Magic. It turned out to be a fair bit better than Yu-Gi-Oh!, but I digress. Pick the game that seems more fun to you. The difference between 40k and Yu-Gi-Oh! is because 40k is so expensive it's better to plan on what you'll like to do in the game in the long term. Whereas with Yu-Gi-Oh! it's all about what's cool at the time. The main thing you'll have to consider as well is the availability of each game in your area. Last time I checked Yu-Gi-Oh! has all but died out completely around my area so that makes it very unlikely I'll even enter the game again.
By then end of our last year of high school we would nearly always get a 20 man game of Uno going, but more often it's varient Boomo.

Its sad but it happens. There's so much hype going on about something, especially in cases in a school or a single region, but when the main players grow up, move onto other things, the whole matter is dropped and no-one seems to remember it even happened. I've seen rich kids back then ( I would've been 12) buy up to a hundred cards and finally throw them away. At least I have been travelling all my life (settling once and for all in NZ), I haven't been affected too much, and there is a FLGS just 30 mins into the CBD of Auckland that has BOTH. YGO and 40k! I'm too damn lucky if you ask me. New Zealand came 7th on World Tourney, I read somewhere.
So yeah, I'm going with YGO casual and 40k less, even if I'll be restricted to small squads then full-blown armies... At least the most basic troop option for CSM is of one the best out there (correct me if I'm wrong), adding a vehicule or two makes a small neat troop .

I'm just on the 3-card chains and decks with a driving force of a round 20 cards, not your usual elite 100% effective top tier deck construction! I view the game as +1s and -1s and jsut engineered something to work that to my advantage. I used Robbin' Goblin as my main setup card since attacking with monsters is free and could result in me taking free actions to make them lose cards. If you're not sure how effective playing to advantage is, try starting a duel with 1 less card and see how much harder it is to do anything. Now imagine being at -3 to your opponent Basically decide what your deck's "engine" is and start from there, then find cards that have synergy with it. For synergy with Robbin' Goblin I used GAF (sheer brute force, do 1-200 points of damage, make them lose a monster and a card or as a last ditch attack mode defender), Don Zaloog(two cards again), and Amazoness Chain Master (which is, IMO, the best opening card in the entire game; they lose a card and you gain one to drive it home). I'm rambling now. Basically tool your side deck to counter the meta decks, but more importantly have a theme doesn't suffer from any one thing being locked down and works well against what you'll be facing. PM me if you want any help! Oh, and download YVD (Yugi virtual desktop) because it allows you to duel with anyone over the internet, but is also an awesome tool for playtesting (much better than proxying).

The only question I'd have is, how often do they rotate sets?
If it's fairly often I say bulid up the hobby stuff rather than go in piece meal into

I used to play Magic seriously, going Regionals once, back in 2005. I bombed out because my friends and I mis-judged the field and a lot of decks that we thought would be there, wasn't. A lot that we thought wouldn't was.
Anyways, I've found that doing both often takes away from one or the other. So, pick one, and focus entirely on it, if you are competitive. If you aren't, the go for both.

Great, my idea of 'deck engine' rotating about a set combo, or even one card (your Robbin' Goblin), is correct! I got confirmation by US's n°2!
PS: YVD is a mega awesome idea, the only other option I thought possible to play online would have been to play over MSN...heck, I hate MSN! BTW, how much memory space do I need for YVD?

I don't do Christmas, I do Eid (today). Thank you so much everyone!!
I've boiled down all that I've read into three things:
-Don't force yourself to buy everything at once.
-Play YGO, but on YVD
- BUDGET CAREFULLY
Great advice!
I've started going to the FLGS, its not too far from the new house I moved into four days ago.
PS: I've been prowling on yvd, made a name of myself easily (Get off this channel you ******* troll! ), and made a neat XYZ deck.
