If you could watch any band (or artist) from any period in musical history, which would it be?
I would watch Miles Davis' Sextet:
Miles Davis - Trumpet
'Cannonball' Adderley - Alto Saxophone
John Coltrane - Tenor Saxophone
Bill Evans - Piano
Paul Chambers - Bass
Jimmy Cobb - Drums
People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made.
I'd have to go with Louie Armstrong, Dizzy Gillespie, or Queen on this one. There are plenty of bands/artists that I'd like to see, but those three'd have to be top.
Edit: Ah, also gonna have to go with Albatross on this one.

Easy, Floyd...Hendrix or just to have watched Randy Rhoads play (I'm with warpcrafter on that one).

Of course, as an American, that means I must say that soccer sucks, and football (real football... you know, the one where you do everything with your hands) is 10,000 times as good. I mean, football players could probably beat up soccer players, even, because they actually know sports.

The Jimmi Hendrix experiance.
The Doors.
The Sex Pistols
Other than those,I've seen most of the bands I really wanted to...
As a side note,I consider myself extreamly fortunate to have seen The Ramones several times before Joey,Johnny and Dee Dee passed away, when it came to playing live,The Ramones were an absolute joy to witness.

@JEB - I love how you picked three artists that are still going, you're an easy man to please! Guess I shouldn't start building my time-machine JUST yet! @DiscoVader - Good call on Dizzy - how's this for a fantasy jazz line-up?:
Miles Davis - Trumpet (for the slower, subtler numbers)
Dizzy Gillespie - Trumpet (for more frenetic bebop stuff)
Thelonius Monk - Piano
Charles Mingus - Bass
Jimmy Cobb - Drums
John Coltrane - Tenor Saxophone
Charlie Parker - Alto Saxophone
Now THAT is a supergroup. It would sound like total mayhem, but who cares? That's Jazz. I actually think a band that roughly resembles this DID play together at some point in NY - with different people at different times.

Albatross,if you ever find yourself in America you should visit New Orleans,I'm sure you would enjoy the musical flavor there.

Holy crap, I agree. That's a dream team if there ever was one.

@FITZZ - When I do eventually visit the States, that's the sort of place I'd be most interested in visiting. I'm not interested in Las Vegas etc. - I'd wanna see the REAL America, if you catch my drift...?

Indeed I do .
BTW,if you drop me a PM prior to your visit to the States (when ever that may be),I'll give you a list of places in New Orleans you'd most likely enjoy, not the sanitized tourist spots, but some great "smokey jazz clubs",plus I'll give you list of great places to eat.

@Albatross: You want Mingus and 'The Bird' in one band?! That'd be awesome but would contravene all laws of physics :(
I'd love to have seen Joy Division at the peak of their powers; I think Ian Curtis must have been a totally unique frontman.
I played this game with a friend circa 1999, picking The Pixies as my most desireable Happily this was a dream come true in the end....

Black Sabbath circa '73.
Rainbow circa '76
Led Zeppelin '71-75
Jimi Hendrix
Slayer circa 1988 (again)
Metallica on the Master of Puppets tour.
Journey circa '77
ACDC circa '75
Dethklok - My friends checked it out this year, but it is totally unknown in Japan. Even if they, well 'he' I guess, came they'd want like $150 for a ticket. They charged almost $500 to see Judas Priest, Cavalera Conspiracy and Slayer about a month ago in Chiba. Those weren't even scalper prices.

It happened in the '40's I think. In Miles Davis' autobiography he mentions a band (IIRC) that includes Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis, Charlie Parker and Charles Mingus. Thelonius Monk might also have been in it. There was a lot of 'cross-pollenation' in the NY jazz scene in the 30's/40's/50's - that band was never recorded though. I imagine that a band featuring Mingus/Parker/Monk would sound like Ornette Coleman falling down a flight of stairs!
