If you could watch any band (or artist) from any period in musical history, which would it be?

I would watch Miles Davis' Sextet:

Miles Davis - Trumpet
'Cannonball' Adderley - Alto Saxophone
John Coltrane - Tenor Saxophone
Bill Evans - Piano
Paul Chambers - Bass
Jimmy Cobb - Drums

What a band.

Either them or The Beatles rooftop gig.

Seeing Led Zeppelin in their prime would be pretty cool too.

In the realm of the possible, two bands that I'd like to see (and haven't yet) are Social Distortion and The Offspring.

I'd have to go with Louie Armstrong, Dizzy Gillespie, or Queen on this one. There are plenty of bands/artists that I'd like to see, but those three'd have to be top.

Edit: Ah, also gonna have to go with Albatross on this one.

@JEB - I love how you picked three artists that are still going, you're an easy man to please! Guess I shouldn't start building my time-machine JUST yet!
@DiscoVader - Good call on Dizzy - how's this for a fantasy jazz line-up?:

Miles Davis - Trumpet (for the slower, subtler numbers)
Dizzy Gillespie - Trumpet (for more frenetic bebop stuff)
Thelonius Monk - Piano
Charles Mingus - Bass
Jimmy Cobb - Drums
John Coltrane - Tenor Saxophone
Charlie Parker - Alto Saxophone

Now THAT is a supergroup. It would sound like total mayhem, but who cares? That's Jazz. I actually think a band that roughly resembles this DID play together at some point in NY - with different people at different times.

I'd love to have seen Joy Division at the peak of their powers; I think Ian Curtis must have been a totally unique frontman.

It happened in the '40's I think. In Miles Davis' autobiography he mentions a band (IIRC) that includes Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis, Charlie Parker and Charles Mingus. Thelonius Monk might also have been in it. There was a lot of 'cross-pollenation' in the NY jazz scene in the 30's/40's/50's - that band was never recorded though. I imagine that a band featuring Mingus/Parker/Monk would sound like Ornette Coleman falling down a flight of stairs!
