I haven't been on Daka that long, but so far I really have enjoyed interacting wit you guys. I have never met such a group of characters as all of you. You guys are so harsh and very critical, but by being that way I have learned so much more about this hobby I love so much. I was sitting in line today at Andrews AFB, where the Washington Naval Airforces HQ is located. I was trying to get some paperwork filled out for my upcoming deployment to Iraq. While I was sitting there I was reading the current issue of White Dwarf. An officer turned to me and said that he was in a Warhammer fantasy club, as had been since his 2005 deployment. This young BM3 turned and said he got into Warhammer while stationed in the UK at Molesworth. It was funny the passageway became a conversation zone to all things games workshop. I felt better, comfortable. We talked of painting and battle strategy. I started this conversation just by pulling out the White Dwarf issue. Some of the Marines looked at us like we were geeks, but this one Lance Corporal walked up and asked if we were into Lord of the Rings, and that opened up a whole new GW conversation.
I don't know why I felt compelled to tell you all this at 1:33 in the AM, but it made a stressful day go by just a little better. We greeted each other when we saw each other through out the day, even the officers. I remember a time after my last deployment, and a death of a friend when I wanted to die. Getting that last piece, that last Space Marine, that last Ork made me want to stick around. Maybe I shouldn't be saying this, but Warhammer made me interested in things again, and all of the friends I made while taking this hobby on. I remember a time when I was younger and walking through the outlet mall in Philly. I walked past the GW store. This guy in the store gave me the introductory game. I loved it. My ex, said what a geeky game it was, it was beneath me. I passed on that first starter set. I am still here, and I bought my first starter set, and my new wife and deceased shipmate made me remember what it was like to be alive again, and all of you made me learn what it was like to have fun again. You guys are great! Thank you all for being a friend.

Nice dude, don't know all the details but can't you take a small amount of stuff with you to Iraq. I'm thinking maybe the 40k starter pack or something along those lines. All new not painted to give you something to do in your down time thats safe and comforting. Either way be safe in Iraq.

Not sure if it is the same with US forces (I gather you are in the Navy) but when I was in Iraq on tour, we were allowed to pack a 'comfy box' of personal items. On second thoughts, I'm sure the US have a similar arrangement...

Thats a cool story, after all the wars i like the whole "escapism" thing too. The real world is so fethed up sometimes, i think thats one reason im into LOTR,WH,WOW etc.. just to get away from it all.

And it must work wonders, ive never once had the urge to top myself or go on a machine gun rampage in a shopping mall like some veterans!

D is my one of my favourite Dakkaites - he's so uncynical and just has pure enjoyment of the hobby. That seems to be in short supply round these parts from time to time!

If you can take things with you, I'd imagine Space Hulk would be a great game to take (despite my dislike of the price tag). Since you and a buddy can sit down, set up and play away.

I am here now man. If your detatchment does not let you bring a personal box, just pack up your stuff and then have your wife/buddies send it to you a few weeks after you hit dirt.

That is what I had my wife do, and I happily spent the last 11 months hobbying away between missions and such. (Army, though I was a AO3(AW) prior to my switch of services). Now I am a Cav Scout Staff Sergeant with 1st Cav. You can get a lot done over here!

Another thing to look into is fantasty flight games new board games.

You guys are great thanks!!! I just got Space Hulk, and that is a great idea. I think the guys will really like the blood bowl idea. I'll be operating in the Balad area. I am not really sure how that area is going to be, my first time in that area.
My wife says she will send me stuff, so I will prepackage it before I deploy and just have her send it to me.

D, stay safe in Iraq. My room mate has been in afghanastan since march and has been getting orks sent to him. He's got almost an entire army done in his spare time. He says it really helps to pass the time. Hopefully warhammer can help take you away from iraq every now and then when you get a chance to paint or do some modelling.

We can't send primer or any spray paints through the mail to him so we've opened the boxes of stuff before sending it and priming it in advance. If you plan on taking anything or having anything sent to you you may want to have it primed first. It may be really hard to get your hands on some spray primer over there.

I never thought of the primer thing...good tip!!!

Do you guys think that the Battlefleet gothic would be good for a deployment?

Again, never amazes me how many of our servicemen are into warhammer. Stay safe on your deployment, and yes I think BFG would be a good one, you need less minis to have a good time playing, just make sure you bring an opposing fleet, as finding others that play can be difficult.

Granted, I have yet to be deployed (just a cadet, we'll see how much longer that lasts though ), but thats my guess.

BFG would be cool but i think that blood bowl would be best

your forgetting Mordheim. it uses small ammouts of models, the rules are on the net, and its a building system so you dont get board. check it out you wont need more than 20 minis. and its about as compact as GW gets.

for other ideas. id take some adheasive putty and a varitty of weapons options for plastic minis. that way you can swap out weapons if you choose mordheim. just dont buy the game its not worth the price tag when you can get everything cheeper or free, or already have it.

I'll try to find the contact info for you Petty Officer D, but there are some hobby/modelling clubs that have been put together by servicemen overseas.
The reason I bring that up is, they tend towards doing military and aviation modeling.

Also BFG may be a good idea but I would usggest a simpler gaming system so its quick and easy to learn to pass the time nice and quick as well.

however, a complex system like BFG and figuring out all the rules may waste more of your spare time too.
