Yeah but it's the winter Olympics. It's a bit better than getting the record at the Special Olympics but not much.

The World can have it's World Cup and the Summer Olympics. Canuckistan is the home of the true Northmen of the New Millenium. I don't care about the other 13 Gold medals, our guys won the hockey game. That's all that matters!

It's a shame the U.S lost in hockey, but losing to Canada is like losing a game that a kid invented the kid that invented it.

Oh, and U.S has the record for having the most medals!

You know, I'm almost positive that London (host of the 2012 Summer Olympics) is not, in point of fact, a city located in South America.

Meanwhile, the medal count is a crock. Consider an event like the hockey, with huge international interest, representing the best players drawn from fields of thousands, which has one gold medal for men's and one for women's. Then you consider speed skating, with a total player base that's likely less than a tenth of hockey, but between long and short course there's twenty gold medals up for grabs.

Being the best hockey team in the world is a terrific achievement, and while the best speed skating nation is also impressive, it isn't as much of an achievement. It certainly isn't ten times as impressive.

You can observe the result of this in Australia's Winter Olympics results. We have a couple of mountains with a couple of months of snow each year, but we wanted to win Winter gold so we targetted sports with loads of gold medals on offer that hardly anyone does and then set about contacting athletes that probably weren't going to make it in their chosen Summer Olympics events. Our competitor at the skeleton this year didn't know what the event was when she was contacted by the national office to see if she wanted to swap sports.

You can also look the UK, having won the Olympics and deciding they'll need to do well in the medal count, began piling money into minor events. The result was a much improved haul in sailing and cycling (admittedly cycling is a serious event, that's more an example of money mattering as much as talent). China's strong medal counts are another example, China is not a sporting nation but pick up piles of medals in gymnastics.

Congratulations to Canada, it was a good games and the individual performances of your athletes were terrific. But adding up those individual performances produces a very odd set of results. It also drives nation to fund whatever events might score them a gold, rather than simply funding talent.
