No joke.

Honestly that's the funniest E-mail subject I've ever received, but I didn't make it up. It's real:

ncoming! Throne of Skulls Grand Tournaments
The Throne of Skulls is coming: Games Workshop's system for Grand Tournaments promising great games, friendly competition and the chance to enjoy the Games Workshop hobby: over to Jervis Johnson to tell you more.

Our Throne of Skulls Grand Tournaments are all about having a great time playing one of your favourite games. Over the years they have proved to be a huge success, and so we are now planning to run more of them, in more places round the world, than ever before. As part of this process we're updating the way we run our tournaments, to make it even easier for players to have the best time possible. Our aim is simply to get people together so they can play games, meet up with their mates and immerse themselves in the hobby for a day or two.

Tournaments are not just about fighting battles; there are lots of other things to do as well. They offer an unrivalled opportunity to make new friends and see some really great armies. You're sure to come away with some new ideas for your own collection, and hints and tips on how to achieve the best effects. There are usually plenty of other activities to take part in too. You'll find that a Throne of Skulls Grand Tournament is a fantastic way to celebrate all aspects of the Games Workshop hobby.

Look out for details of Throne of Skulls Grand Tournaments to be held in your area in the pages of White Dwarf magazine and on the Games Workshop website at www.games-workshop.com shortly. We look forward to seeing you at a Throne of Skulls Grand Tournament soon!

- Jervis Johnson

So I guess my homeboy Jervis doesn't consider the tournament crowd a 'fringe group' any more.

Looks to me like GW is seeing the success of all the Indy GT's and wants to maske a grab for a piece of that pie.

Im guessing this is nothing more than a ressurection/revamp of the RTT's.

The GT throne of skulls tournament has bee running in the UK for 2 years I was at the first one but missed it last year as the tickets sold out it less than 2 days. Probably because as they have cancelled all the conflict tournaments every one now bundels to this. Its good fun but tends to be a bit hard core.

Well, I'm a bit confused. Here in Germany the Thorne of Skulls tournament (40k) already took place in April. I missed it.
The above mail was also sent within Germany.
Do they plan more events this year?

More likely just a mistake when they set up the mass mailing.

It could be if you refer to my post.
However, the mail was sent in German, i.e., the German staff had to translate it before.

Hmm.. I assume this is the missive we were told to wait for, the one which would explain why the UK GTs which were 3 qualifying heats and then a final with the top third from each heat playing, are now going to be 4 seperate weekends with no "decider" or "UK champion"/equivalent.

..glad we cleared that up then.

In my happy place, I'm in my happy place...

Jervis has always liked tournamnets, I don't know why anyone would think any different. He shows up to Warhammer World tournaments regularly and used to come to the GTs in North America. That is the first place I ever met him.

Throne of skulls is a new look at the current tournaments available. Tourneys went away to refocus on what the game is supposed to be about and whaat made it so huge. Having fun with your friends (whatever that means to you). But Jervis even organizes and runs things like staff tournaments and tournaments in his home with friends. And its not limited to the core games. He has done Blood Bowl tourneys, GW board game tourneys, including those with games that haven't been released except in very limited supply (The Dwarf drinking game what ever that is called).

I consider Jervis a good friend and mentor so of course I am biased. His real philosophy is get as many people to have as much fun as possible in all the different aspects of the hobby as he can. If he was really directing everything with an iron fist we wouldn't have some of the army lists we do and have had. All the designers really have to do is show him that what they have created is fun.

He provides the vision and lets people fill in the dtails. Unfortunatley when designers disagree they can try and sway him but ultimately it goes the way of Jervis and his best intentions even if they don't always work. By the way he will always admit when something didn't work even if it takes years to correct it.

Bottom line is this:

Who cares about GW sanctioned tourneys any more?
They are absolutely no longer even remotely relevant. At last in the united states.

GW turned their backs on their own sanctioned tourneys. Independents picked up the slack and did a much better job than GW could ever dream of doing themselves.

Those same independant tourneys are now VERY lax on 'official' GW models being used to play GW games.

This cuts into their bottom line of course and now it seems they wish to make themselves relevant.

IMO, if they want their own tourneys to be relevant again, they need to do not only a better job with the fundamental rules for 40K and WHFB, but they also need to hire people show true enthusiasm for their hobby and take great stock into the endeavor. Paying people a decent wage while doing so may be a start instead of relying on volunteers who get a few free boxes of product if they are lucky, as GW once did with their GTs.

Lots of other issues to be addressed as well but they will just take this thread off topic with troll responses.

I don't know if I agree about independent tourneys being "VERY" lax on using GW models. I've only been to one independent tourney this year, but it was GW models only, and I haven't heard of it being different elsewhere.

I'm interested in seeing them try to do some tourneys... if it brings up the caliber of the events at my local GWs/the Bunker, that's great! I went to a small tourney at the Bunker a few months ago and was disappointed in how it was run.

The more tourneys the merrier, I say! As long as they don't try to somehow ban independent tourneys, I'll be happy with having both options

So this is not a tournament then?
Seems like another games day type thing.

Dakka provides all this to a much higher level
Im yet to go to a tournament and see anything close to some of the stuff ive seen on here.
Also, if you meet someone at a tournament they tend to be an ass alot of the time, atleast on dakka you know who to avoid XD

However, ill give it a check, cant complain until ive seen it for myself.

No.

No chance at all.

But you should try and set up a Shanghai vs Beijing tournament, that would be pretty cool.

Jervisification of GW tournaments? This has 'train wreck' written all over it. It will be very entertaining to see how this all pans out. Hope it works out, but the record up to now hasn't been pretty.

Sounds more like they're trying to get back to the old-school Grand Tournaments that they used to hold (at least here in the US). The Baltimore GT would bring people from all over the country, and overseas to play. You also had to pick up WD the day it came out so that you could Fed Ex your application in, otherwise, it sold out in a day or two. It was a weekend of good games and very nicely painted armies (just about all of them). Anyone who was playing in the GT's back in '98 or thereabouts knows how the Grand Tournaments were (pub quizzes, sneak peaks at new releases, store on site, etc. - not that I expect any of that to return).

And just maybe they're not happy with the way the independent tournament scene has developed. Lots of drama, accusations of shenanigans, etc. If they decide to pull prize support for the current "GTs", then we'll see what happens to the independent circuit (certain events excepted of course). I expect Ard Boyz to continue since its a trade sales thing and is all about selling models.

I think GW has decided to try to run their own Grand Tournaments again. And if they limit the number of events (way back, Baltimore was the only one), then they'll probably be very successful.

Hmm odd how Adepticon is the biggect tournament convention ..anywhere...and models made by other companies are not persona non grata. Kind of hard for GW to ignore such a large example of free modeling creativity that involves models other than their own.

More and more independent tournament organizers are not strict adherents to the "Citadel ONLY" rule. There simply is no need to adhere to that out dated mode of thinking originally conceived by GW for strictly marketing reasons.

RiTides wrote:As long as they don't try to somehow ban independent tourneys, I'll be happy with having both options

GW attempting to ban independent tournaments is not something they could ever enforce, even if they wanted to.

I never liked this kind of 'friendly' tournaments.

having the majority of your army be in the appropriate company's range is hardly "very lax". it's reasonably permissive. if they ever allow an old warzone capitol army in as IG then i'll agee with you.

You call it reasonably permissive, which it is. GW wouldn't call it "very lax" either, they would call it the worst kind of heresy, give you a three year ban from the hobby, prosecute you in a court of law, and drag you though the streets with a sign around your neck so you could be pelted with rocks and rotten food.

The GW only ruling in any future tournament setting will be harder and harder for them to maintain- and they can thank thier own price increases for motivating people to seek and provide alternatives.

Some of the newer stuff coming out from other companies and small studios has been nice to see
