Should troublesome players be banned for some length of time? Curious as to people's opinions here.

What's the problem?
I think it really depends on what they are doing and if you can expect them to change their ways.

Stealing, cheating, trash talking that is not friendly, being physical with other players, etc, all of which you know for a fact were pre-meditated and just rediculous should be banned.

Oh... and if they don't shower, PERMA-BAN.

This is a little story about four people named Everybody, Somebody, Anybody, and Nobody.
There was an important job to be done and Everybody was sure that Somebody would do it.
Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did it.
Somebody got angry about that because it was Everybody's job.
Everybody thought that Anybody could do it, but Nobody realized that Everybody wouldn't do it.
It ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did what Anybody could have done.

I've never banned anyone, but I have DQed one guy from a tournament, last year's `Ard Boyz in fact. He never came back to the store again.

QFT.

I've also seen a young player get a one-year ban, with the idea that he was reformable.

A disqualification with a private conversation should be sufficient with most reasonable people. Although an argument could be made that someone bad enough to be considered for a ban is not a "reasonable person" to begin with...

I really have to know the story behind thos now...

Though, as others have said, disqualification is often enough.

I had a sneaky suspicion, (was about to abbreviate that as A.S.S... then I realized the implications >.< ), though what happened to get you banned BBF?

If the crime is severe enough then a ban is justified. AKA physical harm, stealing, being psychotic. For minor offenses it should be met with a DQ or warnings first. If you are a repeat offender then you know the risk you are taking and pay the price.

Also a thread on an online forum is definitely not the best way to gain support against a banning. Talking with the owner/organizer and resolving the original dispute is.

Banning: I would utilize banning as a tournment organizer for a few offenses, which are self explanatory. Violence/ aggression towards another player, over the top poor language, theft, purposeful cheating and poor play, destruction of public property at the event.

DQ: a 1 event only dq, could be instituted for a player who is typically good form, but has a melt down. Circumstances happen. I witnessed a guy just melt down as he was in the middle of a divorce, and just go ape on another player. Later to come up and perfusively apologize and acknowledge fault, offering the reason, but still it was a really bad unprovoked sonic boom and the player acknowledged he need to leave.

Prior to event DQ: we've all seen the people that bash the TO openly over the net and on frequented sites and then wants into their events. I do not see a problem with a TO banning someone who has gone out of their way to cause them misery. Now we are talking extreme misery. Not they call the guy a dick because they were drunk or something.

Resolving a DQ/Banning: all matters the circumstances. If its a result of violence/ destruction the players probably out of luck for the next event. If its because of words said, offer a way to write the wrong. Offer to help them promote the next event. Help them with judging. Some them that there's an attempt for a middle ground. Even a good old fashion "can i call you?" or "can we grab a pint and talk this out?"

I think what trumps anything is if it is police or legally actionable. If you're letting someone hang around that is doing stuff that can get the facility in legal trouble, that's really a huge mistake. At least in America where you get sued just by mentioning --

Damn!

Troublesome is kinda vague. If I was a shop owner I'd rather ban one jerk-off than let them mess with the fun the other customers can have.

I've stopped going to stores that wont hold thier patrons accountable for poor behavior.

So, boot the one for the good of the many. If they later prove that they outgrow thier problem, a second chance is fine as long as its not a weekly thing or 'enabling' behavior like 'oh, thats just how he is'. If thats how someone is let them go screw up someone elses fun

Well, I think certain offenses are bannable, but the rest can be settled with a DQ.

Cheating should be an insta-ban, as should getting physical with other players.

If you know that someone is very troublesome and no one enjoys playing them how would you handle in a fair manner? Three strikes & you are out?

The only problem is that the 'no one enjoys playing them' is often from the Casual Gaming Mafia 'YOU'RE PLAYING WRONG' crowd.

You have to define 'Troublesome' and why no one enjoys playing with them.

I would first recommend getting viewpoints from a large amount of people with NON LEADING questions.. My store has a select group of people who when they dislike someone.. ask people in their own group only for opinions

That tends to skew the results :p Some people are just angry in general and cant handle losing regardless of who they are playing

Get the facts and focus on verifiable actions not opinions from the people the player beat. Honestly the best people to ask are those that beat the player in question, nothing shows character like losing

You 'know' he is troublesome.
Then don't admit him into the event.

I don't know what you 'know', but if it's enough for your to say you know then I would suggest the least amount of possible disruption to everyone else in the tourney.

Safe than sorry. As a utilitarian, the many are more important than that particular one.

If you say you know, then you know what to do.
By any chance can you give us the age of this person....cause if it's the age where he/she/it can run to mommy/daddy/guardian and cry about it, I want video.

And yes, MOAR DRAMA!!!

I agree, all questions involving player conduct should BY LAW have their name, internet user name and pictures of them in the most embarrassing pose possible posted to the thread

Said pictures also SHOULD (but not required) have a one or two word funny phrase photostopped onto them

Yeah, this. It comes from people who know they shouldn't be at tournaments anyway but just want to start crap.

Now if someone cheats or just acts like a douchebag, yeah, they need to be confronted about their behavior and dealt with if it persists. But if someone considers you a douchebag/donkey-cave/vermin/subhuman scum, etc. just for taking a list with "cheesy" units in it that doesn't adhere perfectly to their own personal interpretation of ever-changing fluff then I'd say a ban would be outright stupid. It has nothing to do with that person, they're being judged purely because of their list.

I see people talking about players getting physical?

Must be in california or the north.

In my area many of our players carry concealed. You do not want to get physical with most of the folks around here.

Any fool who breaks the law and assaults someone should be perm banned and prosecuted.
