Hello. Right now I play CSM, and though I do love it, I want something different than MEQ. IG is very interesting to me but the price is just insane, $20 for 50 points is a huge turnoff. I was wondering if there was a cheaper alternative model-wise to use the Codex with. I don't mind buying the vehicles, but the price on infantry is too steep for my college student part time job budget.

If anyone has any suggestions I'd greatly appreciate them, or if another army is suggested that'd be nice too!

you can get them of a website called oasisgamer(it is ebay) (just google it) it cheap and seeing that you live in the US of A there would be little to no shipping costs

Attempts by Company Commanders to call down close-ranged artillery fire can result in disastrous casualties amongst the Imperial Guard. Whilst the loss of life is regrettable, the waste of ammunition is INTOLERABLE!

If you want to stick with Citadel minis, try Tyranids, maybe. They're certainly not MEQs and if you go for a heavy army it doesn't cost stupid amounts of money for very small amount of points.

This is Daemonic Cheese:

3000 Pts
2500 Pts
1000 Pts (And growing)

I'd put a quote here, but XKCD would have a better one.

I was just about to suggest the Wargames Factory! Otherwise, Warzone also have several ranges which would be suitable, and can be picked up Dirt-Cheap, particularly through eBay!

I saw the Wargames Factory ones, but it seems they're sold out, and I heard there was a huge delay in the shipping of them.

How are 'nids or Tau? I've been wrecked everytime I played Tyranids, but I haven't heard much about Tau at my LGS.

AFAIK, they're still being shipped out, and the Warstore still has 'em in stock. What _is_ sold out is the conversion pack the Warstore was offering that had lasgun arms and bases. You can get these from elsewhere (eBay or the bitz store of your choice), so it's not a big deal. And if you're planning on using them as veterans with shotguns, you only need bases anyways - the stock guns can pass for shotguns pretty easily (perhaps with some trimming?).

Iron Warriors - 4000 points (non-inflated, full FOC)
Black Crusade - 1500 points (non-inflated, led by Abaddon)
Jenen Ironclads (traitor IG/ABG) - 4000 points (non-inflated)

I would vote Tau.

They're GEqs, they're not super expensive (150 points of Fire Warriors is about $35 brand new), and they've got some of the coolest looking minis and tanks in the game in my opinion. Plus they've got a number of very competitive builds, and several very fun themed armies you can run.

DKK and Elysians have their own forgeworld rules. And in fact, DKK are awesime. WS4, stubborn in close combat, and automatic regroups near officers FTW. WS4 makes power swords actually worth taking.

I hate to tell you, but with the recent 50% price hikes starting ANY new army now is going to be really expensive, not just guard.

As mentioned, you can take plastic minis from other ranges (perry miniatures, ftw). You're going to have to do a lot of conversion work to make them guard-ey, but it's a great way to buy an army with time rather than money.

I would vote Wargames Factory Shock Troopers for IG. 100$ netted me 120+ models:

Those minis look pretty decent, but goddamn is that pistol arm awful. From what I can tell these guys will look quite a bit better using Cadian arms.

I was thinking the same thing. Looks like he's holding a power drill.

TheWarStore is shipping these guys in boxes of 18 with 20 Cadian arm/lasgun sets packaged with, for $35.

They're out last time I checked but that'd be worth keeping an eye on.

Yeesh. Those are an awful sculpt, though. The details look mangled, the poses and facial expressions look anything but natural, and it looks like they wrinkled the cloth in some places just for the sake of wrinkling cloth.

And that sword. Ugh, that sword.

Second to the bottom - what are those? Can you link to them?

They'd make some pretty awesome IG Veterans or Stormtroopers - or even just basic infantry.

The ones on the bottom aren't quite gritty enough, but the ones second to the bottom look real nice.

I guess if you're working minimum wage or something, damn. In that case, yeah, go with the cheapo plastics.

Last thing we need is more broke-ass people complaining about a niche hobby luxury item being expensive.

Not by choice. The job market here's dried up for anyone who doesn't have a degree in something important. Or isn't management (what the hell companies, why do you need so many new middle managers?).

This is why I bought as many as I could when you could get 20 IG for the price of 10 now when I heard about the change.
Luckily they lowered the price of the Sentinels and released the kit to make the Manticore/Deathstrike for 50 bucks.
I'd say stick with getting just a few squads and running Vets until you can afford to go Platoon heavy, if you want.

Well, obviously then the solution is to get a degree in something important.

School is a great way to procrastinate from having to get a real job. So far it's worked for 11 years since high school, haha!
