Subject: Painting a converted Dread. (finally with WIP pics)

Hi guys.
Just wanted to swing an idea by you, and geet some oppinions.
After having re-asserted my love of walkers (by playing starcraft II, man those Goliaths are sweet), I've been trying to come up with a way of creating a not-so redicilous Ork Dread, and kans. (some people may like the trashbins, I don't..)
Basicly, I want my walkers with a proppa cockpit, (visible ork) in the lines of the cockpit for the IG sentinel, wings from below the weapons sprout.
My idea, is to take a dread, flip the "body" 90 degrees, (exit hatch to the back), add "wings", and "chickenleg-ify" the legs a 'la sentinels/warwalkers etc, saw out a L shape in the bottom of the dread body (now the front), and scratch build a cockpit.
I'm a tad sceptic as to how this will look, and a tad to cheap to just buy it and try.
Thoughts?

A looted sentinel, with extra bits bolted on and the legs shortened (by leaving out one joint) would be fairly easy to do and look fluffy. They could also make good kans.
Not so sure about your dreadnought idea - rotating it adds a lot of complexity to making it still look good. Why not just loot a dreadnought, add new arms and a cockpit to replace the marine pilot sarcophagus?

So far, my swinging plans are working.
haven't had much time to work on it though, had a of a time finding plastic tube in the correct "thrashcan" (22mm) diameter of the old cockpit for the dread, which I use as it's belly.
Whilst I work on that, I thought I'd try to get input on how to make the legs. I'll have to lengthen the original legs as is, due to the different placing of 'em, (middle or top socket if you look at a regular dread), and I was debating which style to use:
so, which would you think was the best, A or B?
I'm also at odds as to how to make the "glass" for the cockpit, either, I'll go with the "hatch" look, in the viewport of rhino's, or tinted glass, as per the armored sentinel. Or I'll just glue on all the different "eye" slots that come for the ork dread (3 right?) one on each side, and one at the front....
Thoughts?

PS, pics will come tomorrow night or the day after, if I can get the macro to work on my GFs camera....

*walks in grumbling about work and digital cameras that just won't focus*
Well, looks like I'll have to replace the lens on my own cam, and learn gimp so I can clean up the photos better.
Ah well, here's two WIP pics. The legs are nearly done, just going to fill some gaps with GS, and add the rivvets.
So far, not counting the exhausts, it's the same height as a regular ork dread.
Slow work, but hopefully I'll have more time in the coming weeks to work on it.
The big hole, is where I'll extend the "trashbin", and make a cockpit. not too sure how to place the weaponry yet.
Thoughts??

330+ views and only one reply beside my updates. Ah well, must mean I'm doing something right...
Couldn't sleep, so I decided to post a quick update.
after heating plasticard with a lighter, a regular light, getting wasted on the fumes, burning the plasticard, boiling it, scalding my fingers etc, I've dropped the idea of a round cockpit.
Instead, I'll be doing a 6 sided one, and tonight I completed the main work on the lower part. still needs some plates, and scores, but I think it just might work, even though it isn't rounded. I've bluetacked on the legs and lower part cockpit for the pics.. so don't worry about it's pose just yet
After watching the pics for a while, I'm beginning to consider giving it an underbite...
Problem with weapon placements still stand... I'll probably put the dreadnaught CC weapons in the "joint" where they're supposed to be, though I'm still a but sure on how to place the other 2 Weapon emplacements.
They'll be magnetised so I can choose between extra dread CCs, scorchas or big shootas...
At the moment I'm considering two "wings", just behind the cockpit, and a third camoflaged weaponmount beneath the cockpit. Not sure how to make it look good though....
Anyhow, replies other than my monologue like updates would be nice...

I actually think that this cockpit will turn out nicer than a round one. It gives a more crude and orcish feeling to it.
Regarding the armament?
Skip it, and play with the dread totally stripped.. My daemons don't like your dread
Although if you feel you want guns and weapons and daemonsmashing ouchies *grins*
I would go for 2 gun-slots beneath the cockpit, Apache style, and 2 arms from the leg-joints OR the circular hole just rear and above the joint., with one weapon on each, magnetized at the elbow so you swap the entire underarm when changing weapon, and thereby avoid it looking ugly and unfinished in case of removing DNCCW, and replacing with ex. a big shoota. Making each underarm having a feeling of "complete" to it.
By I still think you should send them all to the scrap-yard

Do NOT use a direct flame to shape plasticard.
Use hot water or a heat gun.
It's safer and is less likely to liberate toxic volatile chemicals that will poison you.
Orks will use what they have. Strutwork and flat panels. slap windows on sentinel strutwork and call it a good-un.
Otherwise, looking good so far.

This is a little story about four people named Everybody, Somebody, Anybody, and Nobody.
There was an important job to be done and Everybody was sure that Somebody would do it.
Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did it.
Somebody got angry about that because it was Everybody's job.
Everybody thought that Anybody could do it, but Nobody realized that Everybody wouldn't do it.
It ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did what Anybody could have done.

Hopefully I'll finish the roughwork on the cockpit when I get home from work in 2 hours (will post pics when that's done aswell).
I have three options for the "shooty mounts" as I see it, RSjake's idea, or, as alienfood suggested to me irl today, on the outside of the leg joint/mount, or, on the flat area above the cockpit, on ball-mounts...
I dread the whole rivvit process that I'll have to endure later on...

Cockpit "done". still need to add the toned glass(cut up pblister, with black sprayed on the "in"side), but that'll wait 'till the painting is done, hence why the frame for it is just bluetacked on.
on the flip side, I got the camera to focus, so these are the best pics since the cat threw down my camera from the shelf...
I've also added the dread CC arms, as seen in the pics, but I haven't added the covers on 'em, holding the claws in place, as that'll have to wait untill further into the painting process.
I'm considering gluing the legs into place, as that hopefully won't mess up the painting process, but the arms will be magnetized along with the weaponry, for transport and weapon destroyed reasons.
Now, here's a fancy reference pic:
1: I'm considering putting the mechanised skull from the kit here, or magnetized ball-mounted scorchas or bigshootas.
2: I MIGHT be able to place the weapon mounts here.
3: or here, or below, apache style.
4: I could also place 'em on the dread arms, probably the "elbows"...
5: this round detail will be press mould copied, and added to "6" for extra detailing.
So, mainly, beside showing that I'm actually working on it, I need your help in deciding between 1,2, 3 or 4, as to where to place the weapons...
thoughts?

I assembled the big shootas today, and the mounts (which'll be magnetized), just to check the size.
Area one (the flat space) is out of the question, as it just looks... wrong.. when I tried it out.
I also tried blue-tacking 'em underneath, apachestyle, but that also looks a bit iffy, though I'll try making a better mount for it and trying again...
areas 2 or 3 are the most likely atm. and I'm also workint on converting the two KMB's into scorchas, by re-modeling the pilot light, and adding fuel barrels instead of the "kmb balls"... Hopefully I'll get my hands on 8 2mm diameter magnets today or tomorrow.
I've decided to glue the arms and legs in place, and magnetize the claws in their sockets on the arms.
I'll blue-tack the bigshootas on the different positions (incl. 1) tomorrow after work, and taking pics so you can look for yourselves.

Heh, work got into the way of modeling and posting here. fancy that...
Anyway, shootamounts and bigshootas in place and magnetized, rivvits done (though some will need filing down a bit more), and GS detail added to the legs, as well as filling the gaps.
Legs are glued on. and the kmb -> scorcha conversion is done (though I forgot to take pics of 'em... dóh!)
next step is magnetising the klaws in the arm sockets, and gluing the arms in place. should get more magnets tomorrow.
I also blue-tacked the skull on the empty space above the cockpit, just to see how it looks.
I'm going to press mould the skull tomorrow, and glue on a more propperly bemt one once the mould has dried...
Thoughts?
And I had to add a pic of it's side-profile, just cause I love the underjaw...
And finally one with the arms blue-tacked in place, and a poor guardsman acting barry =)
