I am really enjoying these new models from mantic. My 8th edition army is going to be "spliced" with these models.

Really?

I thought they were awful.

I will stick with my 1980's Imperial and Norse Dwarves thanks... Not any of those 'Balls with Feet and Beard in armour' that seem to abound these days.

I think the current GW line looks nicer than Mantic's stuff by a country mile at least. Reasonable minds may differ.

I like them. I like the proportions and the armour, the faces and beards aren't amazing but the overall look is good enough that I forgive it. Love the great weapon poses too. I'll be getting a boatload, intend using them as hammerers and ironbreakers, since the GW ones look like poo.

Actually the mantic 'berserkers' look nice.

Just the rank and file look as dodgy as the GW ones.

Dwarfs just dont seem to come over well in plastic... All the GW ones have been dreadful.

Heh, I think what bugs me most about the GW ones is how "snow white" they look, in general. The mantic ones actually look like soldiers.

A lot of WHFB standard line troops have a way to go. High Elves are the worst but I won't deny Dwarf Warriors need a substantial re-work, too. (Can you say "cover girl beards"?) Even so, GW's Dwarfs don't look like stunty Assyrians, unlike Mantic's. And when I look at the Beserker's I think "oh, naked Space Wolves rejects." To me, they can't hold a candle to GW's Slayers. But as I said, reasonable minds may differ.

I just hope Dwarfs get a brush up after Orcs'n'Gobs.

I'm quite fond of Mantic's flat head, and top heavy armor idea. They really seem to have embraced the idea of stout, short cave dwellers. The GW ones seem to have most of their armor in heavy chain skirts, which, now that I think about it, don't make much sense for irregular, confined terrain.

GW definitely has some gorgeous dwarves, especially with all of the artistic touches. I find myself more drawn to the gritty, plain and logical approach of mantic. They really don't compare well- they are made with completely different visions of what dwarves should be.

I think GW needs to up the scale on their dwarves. They're just a little too Short IMO. It's really hard to make a model look good when it's that small.

Guess you aint seen some of the 6mm and 10mm figures on offer, not to mention 15mm and 20mm...

I think the GW dwarves need to get a little taller and get some knees. Their arms almost drag on the ground.

The only issue I have with Mantic Dwarves are the beards. They're too rectangular. They remind me of ancient Greek pottery. Other than that I rate them above the GW line (though I do like the GW dwarves).

I'm one of the few people who prefer the Mantic elves over GW's as well. Yes, they look scrawny, but elves are scrawny!

The mantic dwarves are mediocre at best. Not really impressed. Of course they do cost a lot less and that is a very good thing.

Or make the arms shorter?

Not sure if Dwarves need to get taller, but that is open for debate.
Dwarves by definition are small, but exactly what is the average height of a dwarf?

I agree about the Mantic Dwarves' beards. That is a thing that puts me off most but there is always the ubiquitous GS
GW's Dwarf artillery wins hands down for style imho, but again the Mantic is cheap and could be converted.

Still like the GW Dwarves as well, so for me it comes down to price and a full unit in a box that will probably clinch it for Mantic

Was just thinking that beards are of great import for any self respecting Dwarf. (And what Dwarf is not self respecting?)

Therefore beards would be protected from blood, gore and damage by battle bibs!

The more ornate the battle bib, the more important the dwarf.

I despise the current Games Workshop Dwarves.

Not the massive awesome beards, it's the midget-esque bodies with massive heads. Look at the artwork! There, the Dwarves are just broader, and about a head or two shorter. Not a goddamn Head with arms, legs, and a beard.

I personally dont think the mantic dwarfs are that great, actually aint a fan of any of the mantic stuff.

I'm looking into a dwarf army as my second Warhammer fantasy army, but i'll be keeping well away from the mantic ones, despite them being a great price.

Personally I think the Mantic Dwarfs look like a heap of squares glued together. The only line of theirs that I like is the Undead, and that's pretty hard to screw up.
Is there a rule that Elves have to have funny helmets?

I think that the Mantic Dwarves are just another failure in a long line of attempts at plastic dwarves. Dwarves just look so much better in metal for some reason. Look at the metal dwarves GW have released over the years. They have always been very characterful looking models. But whenever plastics come into the equation, they cock up.

Personally, I think that the Red Box Games dwarves are the best dwarves, though GW come to think of it, GW did do decent plastic dwarves...

Lord of the Rings plastics always look so ace. Perry win.

Was looking at the LoTR Dwarves too TT
Have to agree they are well proportioned. Knuckles in absolutely no danger of scraping the ground.

If I had the phennigs then I would buy Red Box by the barrow load with some AoW for good measure.
(Actually maybe barrow load is a poor choice of expression as it could mean a heap of dead dwarves! )

As a matter of interest how do the LoTR dwarves measure up in comparison to the WHFB ones. Assume they are true scale rather than the latter's heroic scale?
They seem to be a mix of unit types as well.

Best Dwarf range is for War Of The Ring.

Better proportioned, nicely armoured, just gorgeous!

YMMV.

I am not sure. I do use Army of the Dead plastics for my Word Bearer Zealots.

So, just by that I'd imagine they'd not look that off scale in Fantasy. Though I'd get a blister pack of metals to test the size first before buying LOTR plastics, as LOTR plastic sets contain TONS of miniatures.

Most of the LotR line is true 25mm. They look tiny next to the WHFB 28mm heroic scale stuff.

Oddly, not all the LotR stuff is small. The Army of the Dead figures are 28mm. So are the plastic Haradrim Raiders (mounted), while the Haradrim foot are 25mm. Those look strange, side-by-side.

I certainly wouldn't try to mix LotR dwarves in with WHFB dwarfs. And I sure wouldn't use metal models in a blister to judge the scale of plastics in a box- any congruency would be coincidence, rather than attention to scale across the line.

Thanks Fellblade
That makes sense. The Elves seemed smaller but wasn't sure if it was my memory playing tricks.

So was having doubts about the dwarves scale too.
Pity as they are very good.
