Imperial Knights, Frateris Militia, Naval Stormtroopers are my guesses. There are probably a few that I've forgotten.

1. Agreed. They got that one ruleset for 3rd or 4th. I'd love to see them as a choice for an upcoming Inquisition codex, or even as an Elite choice for the IG.

2. Not really sure what you mean. Departmento Munitorum is the high command for the Imperial Guard and Navy. They don't need a militia. Perhaps you mean frateris Milita, which are sometimes sponsored by the Adeptus Ministorum? I'd agree with that. I'd like to see them as a low cost horde troops choice in the next Witch Hunters codex.

3. Disagreed. GW makes the Iron Hands kit which can be used to spice up any Space Marine squad, so they're hardly ignored. I think, rather, that people don;t make them very often since everything we do know about them suggests they are total a-holes.

I think the Adeptus Custodes are largely ignored. They have almost nothing in the way of models (a few for Necromunda, I beleive?) and a single book. I'm not saying this a is a bad thing, mind you. Even the galaxy's best SWAT team has no place on a 41st millennium battlefield.

You're thinking of the Adeptus Arbites (Judge Dredd guys), not the Adeptus Custodes (Emperor's guards).

Even the galaxy's best SWAT team has no place on a 41st millennium battlefiel.

They're better equipped than the Imperial Guard. Shotguns with homing slugs, bolters, entire squads armed with power weapons and carapace armour all round. They're not being sent off to war, but they need the ability to lay the smack-down on any cult or planetary governor that gets too big for their boots.

departmento munitorium militia's are locals conscripted for the guard from local populations to do gakky jobs that a trained soldier who could be killing baddies doent want to do(ie haul away bodies from the battlefeid and strip them of useful supplies as in the novel rebel winter) also if a pdf is in shambles when the ig gets their they may be turned into gak shovelers(militia)

the reason you never see costodus is because they are few and far between. They are all on earth and almost never leave being the bodyguards of the emporer, they almost never leave his side which is allways on earth. the only time one would leave would be at say the spearhead of a crusade leading it if somehow the god emporer himself appeared to them with some gawd awwful holy quest to do something crazy and convoluted....other then that they never leave earth.

Which three do /I/ think don't get enough play?

1. The Inquisition (the whole damn thing)
2. The Sisters of Battle
3. The Ultramarines (and their successors)

While these groups get a lot of face-time in fluff, they get very little in the way of battlefield time. (At least at my game shop)

Indeed. It's easy to get one's Adeptuses mixed up. Thanks for the correction. Though, the point stands.

True enough. I was talking more about training, though I suppose I wasn't thinking about some of their larger scale operations. Still, can't help but feel like that additional equipment does little more than equate them to a well equipped Veteran Squad.

It's quite funny because in my army I've always tried to include lesser known armies of the Imperium. Hence I have 12 Arbites, a Repressor, a Land Speeder, a Bike and a Precinct for them, and I currently have 25 Storm Troopers awaitng their first shade of Grey and Blue/Green (undecided) this weekend as the first step to becoming Naval Security Storm Troopers. However, my votes are:

1. Adeptus Custodes (remember some beautifully converted ones in a White Dwarf but that's all i've seen)
2. Adeptus Arbites (although they have received a little bit of love since Black Library finally released the 'Enforcer' Omnibus)
3. The Adeptus Mechanicus (Hell there's lots of flfuff telling us hwo secret they are but what are the secrets...?)

Why would Frateris Militia-- basically a religious rabble given some cheap guns and tossed at the enemy-- be an Elites choice?

Agreed. The Imperial Guard already have a Frateris Militia equivalent: just use them as counts-as Conscripts.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but they're also too few to be fielded as an army per se

Well, its nice to dream isn't it? Plus If i could i would definitely have an Army of these guys, Custodes would be just like a Grey Knight Army small, nails and not very flexible. Squats would be tech heavy with lots of vehicles.

Re: Squats: While they weren't technically an Army of the Imperium, they openly sided with the imperium, trading stuff like the Leviathan STC for the Rhino STC in the fluff. Conversion Beamers and Thunderfires are also originally Squat weapons "traded" to the Imperium. Thats why I have converted Chime-Rhinos for my Squat IG army

Penal legionnaires are more skilled than most guardsmen, while conscripts and frateris militia are less skilled. Legionnaires would be a better fit if you wanted some inducted Cawdor or Redemptionist gangs, not civilians.
