Alright, so this is my first P&M blog, so bear with me and forgive any slow updates, as I do have a job, a life, and several other armies and projects I'm working on....
But I've been seeing a couple of people mention the prevalent Egyptian theme with Necrons, and even seen one or two very nicely done Egyptian themed Necron armies, albeit largely centered around an Egyptian themed Lord and Immortals... but regardless, the image stuck with me, and now it compels me. I've decided to take the Egyptian aesthetic and run with it. Not literally, of course.
So I've started by picking up a jug of Purple Power and a paint can to strip my currently very boring Necron paint job to get them ready for this project. Since I've no pictures of painted Necrons to show you, I figured I can go ahead and give you a rundown of what I have planned, and get your feedback on the conceptual aspect of it.
For starters, what I'm working with is one Destroyer Lord, eight Destroyers, twenty Warriors, and seven Scarab bases. Eventually I plan to buy around ten Immortals and a Monolith, but I don't have those on hand just yet, so I'll be starting with the Warriors and the Lord.
The idea is simple.
The Egyptians used a lot of turqoise, deep blue, coral, and gold in their artwork, especially for royalty (but the priesthood got some love as well).
The colors used will be:
FOUNDATIONS AND BASECOATS
 , ,
(Mordian Blue, Blazing Orange, and Chaos Black)
COLORS AND METALLICS
 , , ,
(Enchanted Blue, Blood Red, Shining Gold, Bleached Bone)
I'll begin by priming the whole army black (INCLUDING the green rods), then basecoating the joints and skeletal underworkings on everything with Bleached Bone, the plating on everything with Mordian Blue, and the glowy bits (rods and eyes) with Blazing Orange. The Lord's skull will be the exception on the Bleached Bone - it stays black in preparation for a coat of Shining Gold to denote rank. From there, the plating will get a coat of Enchanted Blue with a highlight of 1:1 Skull White/Enchanted Blue, the eyes and rods will get a coat of Blood Red (over the Blazing Orange to simulate the coral colors used by the Egyptians), and everything will get a wash of either Gryphonne Sepia or Devlan Mud, I have yet to decide.
The Lord will probably go last. I have plans for him.
I plan to get a Thousand Sons box and cannibalize it for the headdresses (IF I can... I honestly can't remember if the headdresses are seperate or part of the helmet... and I don't have a dremel, so if they're part of the helmet, I may not be able to add this feature). The Lord will get one, as will any Immortals I buy and paint.
Naturally, once I get the Monolith, it'll also be done in the same theme - Enchanted Blue with Shining Gold trim and Blood Red/Blazing Orange glowy bits.
And of course, any comments, tips, tricks, etc. are welcome!
I'll post pictures as I begin and continue this project.
Stay tuned for more!

I also forgot to mention: these guys are going to be wielding golden guns. Every one. Even the Warriors (and I know that normally low-ranking priesthood and obviously the soldiery would never have gold ornamentation the way royalty would in Ancient Egypt).
So the guns will be primed black, and get at least one coat of Shining Gold. The coils and glowly bits will be done like the rest of the coils and glowly bits - Blood Red over Blazing Orange.

The 1k sons helmets are part of the heads, and are metal. However Scribor (I think?) did some Head dress parts the were for 1ksons conversions that would be ace for you.
Have you considered getting some of the rods that are red or blue to replace the green ones with rather then painting em?

I didn't know you could get red or blue rods... where do you acquire such things?

Word!
Yeah red rods would be much easier than painting a cylindrical object and trying to make it glow... I was still trying to figure out how exactly I was going to pull that off.
Still gonna do Blood Red over Blazing Orange for the eyes, though.

Oh, very nice! That red tube is the EXACT color I want!
Thanks dude.
I'm worried about how expensive the headdresses are going to be, but I really don't want to go through the headache of cutting metal heads out of 1k sons headdresses, so it's at least more appetizing than that. There's only one headdress I want on that sprue though, so I'll eventually have to order about six of those (two sprues per order, it looks like, so for 10 Immortals...).

You could probally trade off the unused ones on the swap shop. Im sure someone like Vindicator#9 would be all over em. These are much more "oh no, I slipped" proof too.
My painting might not be the best, but I spend almost as much on bits as the models so that my minis are never boring, lol.

Really liking this idea, thought about nabbing that big ole tomb king polearm thing for your lord's warscythe? (The one actually being held by a tomb king), reckon it would look pretty sweet , in fact you could probably scavenge alot of neat little bitz from the TK's...
Good Luck!

I definitely could! TK are so delightfully Egyptian themed that I could probably steal all manner of delightful bits - for example, I actually have a Tomb King on Chariot model (for completely unrelated reasons) whose big-ass sword I could swap my Lord's warscythe blade for! Or add it in addition...
The possibilities!

Well I've hit a slight speedbump, I won't be able to start stripping my Crons until tomorrow most likely - I got home with the Purple Power only to realize that I don't have a single paint can, bucket, or other container suitable for letting minis wallow overnight.
The only things I have are completely open-topped and I really don't want my cats getting into this stuff, so I'm going to have to run out to Home Depot tomorrow and get some empty paint cans.
But that won't stop me from using one of my primed but otherwise unpainted Necrons as a test model! I'll work on that tonight and upload the results.
That said, I did take some "before" pictures of my Crons as they are currently.
Behold the boring!

Nice, maybe... but that paint job is ripped straight from the codex.
Sageheart wrote:this seems to be a great idea! cant wait to see what you make with it!!

Totally. I cut the Tomb King's sword off his sword arm, and I'm going to find a way to integrate it into the Lord's warscythe. Beyond that, mostly what I mentioned earlier, with the headdress on the Lord and possibly on the Immortals (but I'm not certain it'll go on them).
So mostly the Lord is going to undergo some surgery, but no one else as far as the current plan goes.
The first Warrior is mostly basecoated. The Bleached Bone coat is done, and I'll upload a picture once the Mordian Blue coat is done, then another picture once I've applied the Devlan Mud wash.
Which may be tomorrow, since it's already way past my bedtime - as soon as this movie on USA is done playing I'm heading to bed. I have no idea what movie this is, only that it's about a prison, football, and Adam Sandler.

Actually, if you look at the entire army, most of them are primed black...
...and none of them have a spot of white on them. The image is washed out a bit, I know, but that's Bleached Bone.
Anyway, I've tried Enchanted Blue and Shining Gold over white before, it looks too bright. Not a fan of the look.
So I'm sticking with black primer.
Which is what most of them already have anyway.

If you have a heap of tomb kings parts, maybe look at the pole from the chariot that the yokes are attached to. It could make a very nice weapon, it has the blade and an interesting curve reminiscent but not quite the same as a scythe.

There are a couple of interesting blades on my Tomb King Chariot sprue here... I bought it some time ago for a Daemons conversion but didn't use most of the weapon-type parts, so I have two curved blades (one from the chariot yoke, one from the scythe carried by one of the skeletons) and one pointed blade (from the spear carried by one of the skeletons). As well as the Tomb King's massive blade itself, I may try to integrate these somehow!
We'll have to see!

Somewhere down the line (probably 2000 points or higher) I'll be getting the Nightbringer... if nothing else, because he looks fun as hell to paint.
As for the Egyptian theme, I honestly don't know what I'd do for him.
But that's some ways down the line, so I have lots of time to think about it.
AFTER at least 10 Immortals, 10 Pariahs, 2 Monoliths, 4 more Destroyers, and about 20 more Warriors.
I can't decide if I want to add Flayed Ones, or if my Elites choices should be 10 Pariahs, 10 Immortals, 10 Immortals. I also may get some Wraiths because they'd be fun to do in this theme, but that's a FA choice, which in my actual list will be populated by Destroyers.
Maybe I'll buy one blister each of a Flayed One and a Wraith, just to paint. Automatically Appended Next Post: Updates!
The Necrons I'd painted previous are now stewing in a paint can (two paint cans, actually) full of Purple Power, so I should be able to take those out and prime them tomorrow. I've started cutting the green rods out of my current Necron models (I was cocky enough to use plastic glue to get them in, so some painting over green nubs will be in order - no big deal though) and tonight I'll probably order the red rods for these guys. I've cut off the Necron Lord's Warscythe blade and replaced it with the Tomb King's sword blade, but neglected to take a picture before plopping the Lord in the Purple Power. When I get him out tomorrow I'll take a picture for you all.
As for right now, here's the test model basecoated with Mordian Blue and Bleached Bone:
and then given a wash of Devlan Mud:
Tonight I'll add the coat of Enchanted Blue on his armor and Shining Gold on his gun.
I debated watering down the wash, and decided against it - these guys have been chilling in a tomb for the last fifty million years or so, I really wanted the "bone" bits to look worn, and I think I accomplished that with the un-watered-down Devlan Mud wash.
Remember, C&C is always welcome!
Oh, and does anyone know how to keep a model in a homemade light box ( GW vehicle box, white printer paper, tape) from getting washed out, like these are kind of getting? I noticed the flash is sort of blotting out bits of the image, usually near the center... anyone know how to avoid this?
