Actually tried that... it looked pretty awful.

Using the flash may look a tad bit washed out but it looks much nicer than just shining a light in there.

Would it help if the light box was deeper? The back is about an inch to an inch and a half behind that mini...

I would absolutely love to post an update, but the gallery is taking forever and a day to upload the new photos.

I blame my crappy connection.

Stay tuned! The test model is nearing completion, and pictures will be uploaded TONIGHT!

Hopefully...

And here they are!

Now until I get (or make) a proper lightbox with proper lights, you all get to suffer through my horrid photography.

Misery loves company, etc.

Anyway, I added the Enchanted Blue coat to the armor, a coat of Shining Gold to the gun, a coat of Blazing Orange to the eyes and the glowy bits on the gun, then a wash of Devlan Mud on the gun itself (to tone down the gold a bit). I'm going for "bronze" on the gun, give or take. To distinguish "gold" gold on the Lord, I'll probably coat with Shining Gold, then drybrush and highlight with Burnished Gold.

I am very pleased with how this mini has turned out so far!

It doesn't show in the picture, but my first reaction to the red bits on the gun is "too orange." It looks a bit more red in the photo than it looks in real life. I may add a coat of Red Gore to tone it down a bit. I haven't decided.

Thoughts?

I'd wait to mess with the red untill you get the rods, then try to match it up.

Good call.

So all that's left now is to add the red rod (which I keep forgetting to order ) and base the miniature.

I was thinking fine sand undercoated with Desert Yellow, washed with Devlan Mud, then drybrushed with Bleached Bone to get a good "desert sand" look.

The sand I have right now is much too coarse for a proper "sandy" look, it'll just look like rocks at this scale, so I gotta go out at some point and get some very fine crafting sand.

I've decided since it's nigh impossible to even see the red eyes, I'm going to go ahead and just get some black down in there and go for the "dead skull" look. It's pretty much what it looks like already from any angle other than "almost directly below it."

Forgot to mention, my old Crons are properly stripped now, so it's just a matter of going and getting some Krylon black primer and we'll be in business. Until then, I do have plenty of other models to start painting! Stay tuned! I'm going to try to knock out a few more warriors (assembly line these guys - god, warriors are boring to paint), and maybe try a Destroyer tonight.

I'll post pics of the result!

really love that model, and agree that you should wait till you have the rods before look at the red

Thanks!

Okay so I have a confession to make.

I've been extremely lazy this week.

The only work I managed to get done on ANYTHING was 1) I assembled a Piranha earlier this week, and 2) I painted the Bleached Bone coat on a Scarab.

Not a Scarab base, mind you. A single Scarab.

I'll, uh. I'll do some more painting tonight.

I'll at least finish the Scarab test model, so I have something to show you.

I'm actually pretty excited about painting the Destroyer, so if I'm in the right mood when I get home from work today, that might get done as well. We'll see.

I think that with the appropriate sand colored basing, these guys will look ace.

That's one thing that's bugging me, I'm not certain what I should do for the sand.

I'm planning on going out at some point and getting some very fine craft sand (the stuff I have right now that I use for my "ice world" bases is just wayyy too coarse - it looks like rocks, not sand, at this scale), but I'm not certain what colors to use.

My first thought is to basecoat with Desert Yellow, then use a watered-down Devland Mud wash, then a drybrush of Bleached Bone, but I'm not certain if that's going to look "sandy" enough.

My second thought is to just basecoat Bleached Bone, wash Devlan Mud, then highlight with more Bleached Bone, which I feel might give it a more homogeneous "sand" look (versus "sand on top of rock," which is what Bleached Bone over Desert Yellow might evoke).

Thoughts?

Hmmm. Not sure, I'd just try stuff on a few bases and see what they look like. For fine grain you may want to try something like ash or snow effects rather then sand.

Snakebite basecoat, overbrush with 50:50 snakebite: Golden Yellow, Wash down with some dilute yellow ink (sienna or somthing), rehighlight Golden Yellow, Drybrush Sunburst yellow, then keep adding more and more white to the sunburst until you have a sufficiently bleached looking sand.

Or you could go with a ruddier sand, start with somthing like scorched brown and work up to a light orange.

I like the first method, giving it a bleached look (which desert sand would absolutely be).

I'm going to have to give that a try.

UPDATES!

So I finished painting the Scarab test model. I still need to do a tad bit of touching up, I got a bit sloppy on a couple of the "eyes," but I like the way they turned out.

Gentlemen... BEHOLD!
