As the title says, What was it that got you into Wargaming in the first place?

During secondary school, a friend of mine used to bring his 40k rulebook into school and i was fasinated by the idea of making your own futuristic army and playing against your mates, but when I found out how expensive it was, I never bothered getting into it. A few years later, I started playing the Dawn of War games for the PC, my fascination with Warhammer was rising yet again.

Some time later, while getting a lift home from a work colleague, I notice a Imperial Armor book tucked in the pocket behind the drivers seat. After expressing my interest in 40k he managed to talk me into starting an army up, So I went to GW, picked up a CSM codex, a Renegade strike force and some dice and have been one happy bunny ever since

I had an older next door neighbour who played it when I was about 10 - just finishing Primary School. I got into it then, when it was Rogue Trader.

Soon after I started Secondary school, 2ed was released and a few people in my year started playing, which is when I started playing and painting regularly.

Stopped for a few years around 17-22ish, but got back into it after university...

Well. I saw 40k models at my FLGS years ago. I bought a box of the old blood claws and the old fenrisian wolves. Painted them up shoddy. Then like a year or two later I got DoW and I bought a few novels.

This made me interested in the hobby. But I never got into it until I was 14.

I've sold so many armies. :(

I say a display of 2nd edition orks versus space marines when I was about 8 years old.

it was two huge fortresses across the table from each other with the armies spilling out onto the board. awsome!!!!

not untill about four years later did I finally dicide to start upon reading the old battle report of the space wolves against the orks in third edition. (I think they had it on there web site back when space wolves could take the exicutioner leman russ).

I now have about 4000pts of space marine, 3600 of speed freaks and 3000pts of tyranids.

No idea what nidz were, they pointed me to google and dawn of war for this "Warhammer 40k"

been hooked ever since! (dont even ask me how I got into team fortress 2!)

My dad has been wargaming for decades, doing mostly historical stuff. As a result, when I was a little kid we'd play DBA and other historical systems, usually using ancients or medieval minis he'd painted up. I'll blame him and Age of Empires for that!

I got into 40k when I was about 12-13 and had started up a homebrew ruleset for all the sci fi figures I'd collected (Copplestone, Kryomek, and some old Space Hulk minis) and at a Historicon flea market I managed to find the old 3rd ed starter set for something like $20. I thought the figures were awesome, and I pored over the pictures in that rulebook a hundred times. A few years later me and my buddies actually tried playing 40k (mid 4th ed or so) and the rest is history.

My dad. How did he get into it, not sure, he's a historical modeller and SF fan so I suppose it was a natural step into miniatures as they started to appear in the late 70s.

Got a set for my stepson to try to sneakily get him to read because he was a professional lazy bastard and was doing crap at school. He gave up as soon as he realised he had to read rules and stuff rather than just sit and paint.

So I took it up instead. Had a lay off of around 10 years but back into it again. Step son is still a professional lazy bastard.

Well I started REALLY young. I was in primary school 7 years ago and I was 8 at the time. ONe of my friends started bringing in some LOTR figures and playing with them in the playground, I know, not really what you're meant to do but anyway...soon all of my friend group had them and it became acraze in my school to rival Pokemon cards which happened before it.

7 years later and only me and one close friend from that original group still play it, but we have managed to infect our secondary school school friends with wargaming goodness now and currently now have a large crowd again, so its back to the good old days!

It was computer gaming that first got me interested in wargaming, namely the computer version of Heroquest. This desire smouldered for a while until I found out about Gorkamorka, by the time my brother and I had the cash to buy a boxed game Gorkamorka had disappeared so we ended up going for 40k instead. A few years down the line I had to endure a gap of 7 years (a-levels, first attempt at uni, second attempt at uni) and this year got back in to it.

For me it was stumbling across a copy of REALMS OF CHAOS: SLAVES TO DARKNESS, not being able to figure out what the heck was going on, and then hearing that Warhammer 40K 2nd Edition was due out 'soon'.

After that, good times!

Of course! The other day I was at the club, and the bouncer was like "Oh snap, you won that Golden Demon. We have your VIP room ready for you, sir." LeBron was in there and asked for my autograph.

My introduction to 40k came in the mid 90's,while visiting a friends house,I noticed his armies, commented that they were pretty cool looking (I've always been one of those people who never "grew out off" toys) and was informed they were used in a game.

Interested,I played a few games with my friend, but had to beg off on collecting an army of my own after he told me how much they cost, money was quite tight at the time.

A few years latter,an ex-girlfriends brother had purchased two of the 3rd ed starter boxes, and gave me all of the Dark Eldar minis so he would have someone to "practice game" against.

I added a few select units, and have been playing ever since.

Ahh, I remember it well. We were on holiday in Cornwall and my brother wanted to go to this place called "Games Workshop", and I was mildly curious. It was a strange treasure trove of pretty little things and as I was a longtime lover of fantasy fiction had just gotten into D&D and running a campaign, this Warhammer Fantasy Battles thing intrigued me. My brother picked up a rulebook, along with the Lizardmen codex and some models, and while he put them together in the bedroom in the holiday chalet, I pored over the full-colour pictures of the different armies. My first D&D character had been an obscenely well put together elven ranger (a favourite character concept of mine, but the DM was what made it awesome ) so Wood Elves were the obvious choice. Soon I was planning my army and picked up the White Dwarf which had the Wood Elf rules at the time.

Of course, those bloody Lizardmen were undefeated, mostly because my brother cheated outrageously because he knew I couldn't be bothered to read and memorise the rules and my strategy was atrocious. Eventually my enthuisiasm waned and I was soon to be going to Uni. A friend of mine from the US had been upset that his Wood Elf army was coming along so slowly, so as a birthday present he got an entire army, painted to a "reasonable" standard, along with a bunch of paints and modelling materials. Two mutual friends paid for the packaging and postage .

I didn't get back into it for a long time; after coming back home with a degree under my belt, the GW staff saw me looking at the old metal Daemonette miniatures. They seemed the sleekest mini's I had ever seen, and this time it was a snippet about the WFRP gods which was my inspiration, an old (or possibly fan-made) account of the four gods of Law. Most people will recognise Arianka (trapped by Tzeentch), Solkan (rah, vengeance!) but Alluminas and Obscuras are less well known. It was the concept of Obscuras that really appealed to me. A God who abandoned everything he was supposed to represent in order to reject the carrying of a burdensome task. He was the jealous Hades to Alluminas' Zeus and he betrayed them all, becoming something akin to a Chaos God, and yet not. It probably helped my fascination that his concepts were shadow, darkness, ice and fear. The GW staffer listened to my ramblings and suggested getting the Chaos WFB book, with some conversion a Chaos Undivided army could work nicely for this idea. We sketched out potential counts-as and I tottered off happily.

Now I play 40k, as both my boyfriend and little brother play Imperial Guard, and still haven't finished painting that 1500 point list of Daemons, though I've started collecting Wood Elves again, as Wood Eldar (temperant zone Exodites).

So that's how I got into the hobby. Twice.
