Codex, first and foremost. Page through it, start building lists. That'll let you know what, generally, you're going to want, and will allow you to make sure you actually do want Space Wolves over your other options.

If you got $180 laying around (or less if you go to some online site), either 2 SW BF or a SW BF and a SM BF to get a good amount of models for starting lists.

Welcome to the Fang wolf bro,
I agree with Kenshin. Grey Hunters are one of the best troops in the entire game and would make a really solid core. Additionally, I started my wolf wing this summer, and have grown to love my long fangs. I HIGHLY recommend them.
Also, do not fall intot he trap of assuming that SWs are close combat beasts. While they are not bad, they are pretty nasty within 24", and these elements are vital. Think of a pack of wolf, running down it's prey in a coordinated fashion, and moving in for the kill after it had been worn out.

If by the former, you'll get ALOT of SW parts and a 2nd drop pod. if you mean the latter I listed a Space Marine BF which gives 15 normal marines, 5 assaults (meh for SW though they'd be weaksauce) and 5 scouts plus a rhino. spreading out all the SW parts will give a good balance of troops and the SM can lend over some more spec weapons and missile launcher

Maybe just buy around 1000 points with a variety of unit types. Play some games and find out what parts of your army you like, what parts work FOR YOU, not for people on the internet or people at tournaments, and improve your collection based upon the inferences you glean from 5 or so games. Most people in your previous thread were mentioning games at 1750 or 2000 points. A decent nights game is only 1500 points. 40k, in general, plays at a lower points level than fantasy. Since you'll be new to the rules, you might want to play some games at 500 points, heck, even units with just the basic HQ and troops. then play a game using vehicles, ect.
And don't be afraid to play some casual games with proxies. (using certain models to 'count as' other models) in order to see whether or not a unit is worth buying.

Grab two boxes of Grey Hunters. You can even make a Wolf Lord from the bits in there if you stick enough bling on one guy.
Battleforce is a pretty good starting point too. That and a codex and you'll be on your way.

Get 2 battleforces and the Codex and you will be set for beginning.
after this i would get a couple boxs of Terminators and a dreadnought.
you can use the dred to represent a normal dred or Bjorn(who is the most awsome HQ choice eva )
SW terminators are very versitile as they can lead squads or be in groups.
wolf guard are simply awsome if a little more expensive then vanilla marines.
Blood claws are nice, but require finess to use as they are little better then orks with 3+ saves.
Longfangs are good, especially when put in Razorbacks.

Getting 3 BF would be nice, but not necessary, though the rhino included is very nice.
And iirc, pretty much all marines of all creeds and allegiances get access to the vindicator, I personally don't like it because I find it rather simple and brutish, but others like it for that exact same reason.

I got a SW BF and it left me plenty of bits over to convert normal SM. Another pack and Wolf Guard boxes mean I don't think I'll ever run out of bits!
I did trade my scouts for Scout Snipers though, because I like Infiltration, but the ability to come in from (on a 3+ roll) any direction on the board can scare some people a lot.

Vulkan He'stan has one of the nicer special rules in Codex: Space Marines, but other than that, they're basically regular Space Marines.
Basically he lets you reroll a lot of misses with certain weapons, and failed wounds with others. Can't really say more than that since we're not allowed to post rules wholesale.

I'm glad you asked this question.
Here's what I did. I bought the codex first of all, so I could get a general grasp of how stuff would work and what units appealed to me most. Now, after this, I bought the battleforce, which allows you to get 2 troops off the bat as well as an elite (Wolf Scouts).
From there, I picked a theme I liked and went with it. Only you can decide what your theme would be, so I can't help you there...

Well that's the thing, though. The Salamanders (and any other chapter represented by models in Codex: Space Marines) are basically just Space Marines with one or two extra special rules when you field their named character from the codex.
So I can't really tell you much about the Salamanders without describing Vulkan He'stan's special rule.
In the fluff, they're an up-close shooty army with a thing for fire (lots of flamers and meltaweapons) who are very protective of civilians. And some of that does transfer over to their representation on the tabletop, but they're not limited to that.

ok so Im thinking of getting 1 BF of SW & 1 BF of SM & perhaps splitting an Assault on Black Reach box. my question is do the models from the AoBR set differ in sculpt/equiptment from the rest of the SM's?
by purchasing these 2 1/2 sets will it give me enough variaty to make a decent 1,500-2,000pt list(s) or will I have too many of a specific troop type (i.e. Terminators)?
this is so tough

This is a true Testment about any Wargaming out there. "How Deep Are Your Pockets?". It depends on what you want to bulid. My first purchased for the Space Wovles were 11 Canis Wolfborn models to stat my ThuderCav and Lords, this does not includes the custom base, painting, magnets, extra bits and pieces to finish them off. Space Wolves are "Great in Melee or either in Med range to Long range shooting.

You'll have plenty of diverse troops for a mostly well-rounded force, albeit a bit infantry heavy. Mechanization is almost mandatory in 5th edition if you want to be able to place in tournaments.
And yes, the AoBR Marines do differ in sculpt - they're basically three-piece snap-together models with a basic, fairly uninteresting pose throughout. They come with a flamer and a missile launcher for the Tac squad, and nothing special for the Terminators. They're great for filling out an existing army (which you'll get through the Battleforce) but you'll want to convert the Tac squad a bit if you want to make them into Grey Hunters.

Mechanization refers to the use of tanks and transports. Basically, vehicles galore.
You'll be hard pressed to find an all-infantry footslogging army in 40k that has the option to put their troops in transports. The only two that actually don't have vehicles are Necrons and Chaos Daemons. Other than that, expect to see Space Marine infantry in Rhinos or Razorbacks, Imperial Guardsmen in Chimera APCs, Tau in Devilfish APCs, and so on.
Well, the Battleforces are great, but you're going to want Rhinos, Razorbacks, and Vindicators to round out your army. Dreadnoughts are great, though I don't know how well they fit into Space Wolves lists (I know Vanilla Marines like the back of my hand, but have never focused on Space Wolves or Blood Angels).

Salamanders are an army that use the vanilla marine codex. The only difference is if you include their special character, Vulkan He'stan, in your army. If you use him, all flamers and melta guns are more likely to hit (in shooting them), and thunder hammers are more likely to hit( iirc)(in close combat). Automatically Appended Next Post: You're trying to buy too much at once! Just buy the codex and one battleforce for now. Play some games, learn the rules, and see what parts of your army you want to expand on! Don't just buy tons of boxed sets, customize your force a little! Read the codex, and see what units you think are cool. Do you have a 40k rulebook?
