I was suppose to be working on my space wolves summer (
http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/302241.page) but my ADD has compelled me to crack out my
WOC ans start working on them at the same time. I can't help it, I have gotten really excited about this army again. I am now picturing a Host of men, beasts, monsters, and shadows answering the call of an ancient and largely forgotten chaos power. They are tools of a small circle of powerful sorcerers who are totally obsessed with gaining personal power through sorceress knowledge, strength of arms. However all this is but the means to achieve their ultimate goal of rousing their sleeping lord and bringing about the end of the world . The few who have seen the shadowed faces of these sorceors from beneath either hood or mask find an alien visage, complete with writhing tentacles.
Here's a shot of the Army as it currently in stands.
Some of these models have seen years of abuse, in the closet, in shoe boxes, or shoved under the bed. These will require a lot of renovation. Others, are recent additions, swapped from others. I have a few conversions in mind, a few are even under way. I have amassed good number of character models at this point, and am excited about working with them.
Here are my Sorcerer Models. I've got plenty, but these are the two I am most excited about.
This one I plan to use as my Level 4 shadow sorcerer. His face will be painted as a silver or gold mask. Within the story I have in my mind, the mask hides an alien face full of tentacles. I believe he comes from the reaper line. Eventually, I may do a second one, converted to ride a dragon. It's likely to count as Galrauch
I think this one is a reaper mini as well. I am considering converting a disc for him to surf on.
And now the melee characters
Archon needs no introduction
I believe this model will loose his slaanesh iconography and find himself riding a dragon. I blame the Eragon series for this.
I need to find a model for the Army Battle Standard. Ideally, I think it would be holding some kind of tentacled squid kind of thing, with arms flailing in all directions, and wrapping around the pole. Perhaps I'd settle for the one from the Dark Elf Corsair command. I could convert one of my Archon on foot models. The jury is still out on this one.
I am also considering mounting a combat a character in a chariot. I plan on running two, and a chariot seems like a decent enough pain delivery system. I originally used this kind of character to break ranks, when
WHFB use to have unit strength.
The Anvil: Chaos Warriors of Tzeetch
I didn't paint these, and traded for them as they are. I believe I will attempt to continue the paint job rather than stripping and starting over. Yeah, that's a second Archaon on foot. I'd like to use him as champion if I can get away with it. The new parry save + the mark of Tzeetch + blasted Standard sounds godly. It's good praying to the bird man. Does anybody have any cool modeling ideas to depict the blasted standard? "
The Blasted Standard burns with coruscating magial flames that explode outward to consume or deflect any missile that comes near it."
The Blender: Khorny Chaos Warriors
They've got Halberds. There is a khorne character model and I am hoping that I can get away with using him as the unit champion if that is not to confusing for opponents. A lot of people don't care for the older chaos warrior models, and I agree that they are hunch backed, static, and cartoony. But I like them. Additionally, I am a bit sentimental about this unit, as these guys are amongst the very first war gaming models I ever owned. I bought them back in high school with my friends and none of us knew what we were doing.
Spiders (Counts as Hounds)
I picture this species completely differently from the forest spiders the goblins ride. They would be similar to giant wolf/trap door spiders. They are rare and little known, as they are generally only found deep in under ground caverns where prey can be scarce. As such, they are firecly territorial and would never tolerate another predator, especially another spider. Seeing them operate together in bands is evidence of the Sorcerer's power over the natural order so that they may serve their own perverse purposes. As models, they will need some green stuff on the heads to cover where the spider buts would have gone. Fluff wise, I'd love to give these guys poison, but I can't justify the points in game. Chaos hounds are cheap and disposable distractions and re-directors it would be a shame to add to their cost.
Marauder Horsemen Conversion
This is such an amazing model kit. I have chopped them up to make centaur because I really like the centaur as a symbol in mythology and poetry. It also connects to the theme I elaborate on in the next paragraph about my marauders. More importantly, I want some practice before I begin working with the Dragon Ogre conversion that I have planned. I have learned a lot of things already. What I think I need most, is a tutorial on Green Stuff. Specifically, armor plating. I'm not sure what the Marauder horsemen's role is in 8th edition, and am not as excited about fielding this unit as I was when I had begun working on this army in 7th edition.
I am also in the midst of putting together a massive horde of Marauders on foot. I have a good number of beastmen and marauder bits and plan to throw together a very chaotic looking horde of men, beastmen, and everything in between. I like the idea that they have been compelled by a summons and have come from all over and are content to march side by side with those who had been enemies of their tribes for generations. Additionally, I like the idea of chaos powers degenerating men so far that they fall to the state of beast, and twisting animals until they rise to their feet and aspire to take their place next to, or replacing mankind. This reminds me of images from the movie, the Island of Dr. Mareau (
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0116654/). They'll have great flails or great weapons and the mark of Khorne. I have already procured a banner from the blood letter kit for them.
Dragon Ogre Conversion parts
I have got
DE cold one bodies and Iron Gut parts. I'm extremely excited about this, but am not yet convinced I have the skill to pull it off. I'll come back to this project when i am satisfied with the Marauder Centaur conversion. This unit is likely to take place of my knights in 8th edition. Still, it just doesn't feel right to go without my knights. I just don't see room for them at less than 3,000 points.
Other things I have but didn't bother taking pictures of are the chariots, additional sorcerer models, steeds of slaanesh (which will likely become spawn), and about 10 knights. I've also got a beholder looking demon from reaper that I plan to use as a hell cannon. I envision it blasting people with chaos energy out it's huge eyes D&D style. I would also like to convert a warshrine at some point. It would either be a big slab where some naked hottie is being sacrificed at the point of a dagger, or a unicorn that has been beaten and bound with chains and is being desecrated and having is blood drawn and collected to be used in the sorcerers dark rites, or a gigantic flame to be painted all kinds of crazy chaos colors. Additionally, I would like to add a dragon at some point.
I also have an idea in mind, of some sort of huge Cthulu looking tentacled horror which would represent one of the tentacle faced sorcerers having reached some sort of physical maturity, and ascending into their species adulthood. They undergo a metamorphosis like a caterpillar in a cocoon and take a new and terrifying form as an adult. It would use rules to count as a dragon lord of some kind or perhaps Galrauch.
Please let me know about what you think about these ideas. I love hearing the kinds of things you guys come up with. My projects are always better for having been able to pick the collective mind of the Dakka community.
Thanks for looking. Updates on this army are likely to be slow, because as I said, I am trying to focus on my wolves. That being said, Don't be surprised if I can't help myself and continue to post progress from time to time.
