Just finished up painting this Techpriest for my IG army and did it all in a few hours today.

Rather pleased with him but as ever I'd like a bit of C&C from the Dakka community

Thanks very much for any input.

Looks really nice. The only thing I would add would be the eyes but if you can't do them properly yet don't risk ruining it.

Wow, thank you very much for that sir.

I'd actually forgotten about the eyes altogether, I think I might have a stab at some point soon.

Thanks very much pal.

I don't care how useful they are on the battlefield, they're a really nice looking model.

That has to be one of my all-time favorite models and you've done it justice, without a doubt.

Wow, thanks very much man.

So many positive comments.

Surely the only negative can't be that I haven't done the eyes yet?

Got around to adding a base now.

Quite happy with the way it came out again.

I think I'll actually cry if this guy ever chips

Sure, that's no problem, I did actually have a back picture up on here but the auto-adjust killed it.

Thank you very much. I had him primed for about a week and then just had a stab at doing him in a day. One of the better models I've painted I think, just behind the Commissar.

Thanks, the Backpack was the bit I was least sure about, especially as he's missing a Servo-arm (Not in the blister for some reason )

I think it does look better without it mind.

Its a bit hard to see any real detail in those photos but the mini is painted very nice. The colours all work together and show the various parts easily and thats the main thing. Nothing seems lost here. Should look great on the game table.

If you don't mind my asking, could you tell me what you did to paint your enginseer? I have my whole guard army to work on still, but that priest is one of the models I'm most excited to paint, even if it looks.....relativly miserable.

Thanks, just as a general shout-out, does anyone have any tips for a SANYO VPC-E875 camera?

I'm gonna hate asking this......but can you elaborate on how to do things like the washes and highlights? I havn't been able to find anything that explains or shows how to do it in a way I understand....

Yeah, I'm "painting impaired"....

Everyone has to start somewhere mate .

A wash is using a very thin paint (Personally I use the GW Washes range) over a colour and this causes it to wash into the recessed areas and creates shading, such as can be seen on the red cloth. It's a very easy way of creating shadows other than blending and requires very little time.

A highlight is when you take the edges of the model and use a lighter colour in order to create the impression that light is falling there. This sometimes can be the base colour itself (If you've washed the entire area) or a lighter colour. This is most evident on the metal edges and on the red cloth where blood red has been used on the larger ridges of the cloak.

Hope I didn't waffle too much

Practice. Lots of practice. Its taken me personally years to get my painting to a level I'm personally happy with it. Though washes are a lot less time consuming than highlighting and blending. But can be used in conjunction to make for some amazing detail. The sky's the limit really for how far you want to go with time spent on painting technique. I just don't have the patience to get into really fine detail work. Though I do make more effort for leaders/character models. Also check out youtube for painting tutorials. Theres some amazing talent out there freely dispensing their tips and tricks.

What you really should do is start a new thread, take a picture of some of your minis (even a cell camera is better then nothing) and then the community can give advice on how to improve your minis. I know I have found that my painting has gotten significantly better after asking for help and getting it here on Dakka and I'm sure yours will, as well.

Additionally, I think you can break every mini painter into two phases: "Have not yet discovered the miracles of wash/devlan mud" and "excellent mini painter".
