Yeah, I'm "painting impaired"....
Everyone has to start somewhere mate

.
A wash is using a very thin paint (Personally I use the
GW Washes range) over a colour and this causes it to wash into the recessed areas and creates shading, such as can be seen on the red cloth. It's a very easy way of creating shadows other than blending and requires very little time.
A highlight is when you take the edges of the model and use a lighter colour in order to create the impression that light is falling there. This sometimes can be the base colour itself (If you've washed the entire area) or a lighter colour. This is most evident on the metal edges and on the red cloth where blood red has been used on the larger ridges of the cloak.
Hope I didn't waffle too much

Okay, THAT all makes sense to me....but now i'm left with "how" do i do it?
Practice. Lots of practice. Its taken me personally years to get my painting to a level I'm personally happy with it. Though washes are a lot less time consuming than highlighting and blending. But can be used in conjunction to make for some amazing detail. The sky's the limit really for how far you want to go with time spent on painting technique. I just don't have the patience to get into really fine detail work. Though I do make more effort for leaders/character models. Also check out youtube for painting tutorials. Theres some amazing talent out there freely dispensing their tips and tricks.

Acctually, by "how", i meant just that...how do you use washes and how do you do highlights....i've looked stuff up on youtube before, and all i ever find is videos where people tell you the colors they're using and then just show you the next step.....as such, i have no idea how either of those things are done.....

What you really should do is start a new thread, take a picture of some of your minis (even a cell camera is better then nothing) and then the community can give advice on how to improve your minis. I know I have found that my painting has gotten significantly better after asking for help and getting it here on Dakka and I'm sure yours will, as well.
Additionally, I think you can break every mini painter into two phases: "Have not yet discovered the miracles of wash/devlan mud" and "excellent mini painter".
Well.......i'd fall into the first catagory....
But thats cuz I don't even know how washes are used....
And i havnt posted any pics....well....because i only hive primed models. I don't know where to even begin....
