Palestinian armed groups pledge to coordinate Israel attacks
From: AFP September 03, 2010 8:38AM Increase Text Size Decrease Text Size Print Email Share Add to Digg Add to del.icio.us Add to Facebook Add to Kwoff Add to Myspace Add to Newsvine What are these? THIRTEEN armed Palestinian groups including the militant Islamist movement Hamas said today they had set up a center to coordinate operations against Israel.

The statement, on behalf of the 13 groups, came as Israeli and Palestinian leaders in Washington launched their first direct negotiations in 20 months and agreed to meet every two weeks in a bid to reach a lasting peace deal within a year.

"We have decided to create a coordination center for our operations against the (Israeli) enemy," said Abu Obeida, spokesman for the Ezzedine Al-Qassam brigades, Hamas's military wing.

He pledged to hit "the Zionist enemy in any place at any time," adding that "all options are open" in response to a question on the possibility of firing rockets at Tel Aviv from Gaza.

Four Israelis have been shot dead and two others wounded since Tuesday in a pair of Palestinian attacks targeting Jewish settlements in the West Bank.
Both shootings were claimed by Hamas's military wing, which opposes the peace talks.

The core problem in Palestine is that there are some people on both sides who don't want peace, they want to win.

That's why every single time there is some kind of a movement towards negotiation, either some palestinians or some Iraelis kick off, like these guys just did.

Does anyone really expect this to work? I mean really? Neither side has the most amazing record in upholding diplomatic arrangements. Kilkrazy is right, there are too many movements on either side demanding for things to swing the other way.

It can work but the peacemakers have to capture the hearts and minds of the people in the middle.

That is very hard because of the history of hatred, and naturally their fear for their security and prosperity.

The acts of the violent are intended to inflame these fears.

They'll never have peace in that area. Those sides have been at each other for better than 2,000 years. It's a lifestyle to be killing each other.

YO DAKKA DAKKA!

News Corp is dominated by Jewish interests. There is no lack of bias here - The Australian is as right-wing as it gets.

Free Palestine, baby. 'Israel' is occupied territory. Considering its past of religious and political violence, Jerusalem could have come into the future as the centre of peace, freedom and tolerance in the world. That's how it could be used to teach us something.
Until the end of WWII it almost was.
Instead, it's still the very icon of religious and political violence, with an ironic bucket of fascism poured into mix.

KK is absolutely right - there are too many groups with different agendas, but the majority either want peace, are arms dealers, or are simply deluded. Israel's nationality laws are nothing short of racist, which is deliciously rich in itself considering that Jewish heritage as defined doesn't make them a 'race' themselves so much as an exclusive club of foreigners. The Mandate and Israel's expanding settlements are and were the result of foreign interests - these days foreign Jews - wanting a piece of the exclusive pie. Originally it was Europe and the rest wanting to ship the Jews off somewhere else, but the intolerance of the past is not an example to be followed.

I'm not for removing the Jews, but I'm all for resettling those Jews those who have settled on stolen land, and returning land titles to the Christan, Islamic and other Palestinians who had their lives and lands taken from them by foreign mandate.

The Palestinians only want justice, and some will go to any lengths to get it.
The Israeli nationalists only want to keep their stolen goods, and some will go to any lengths to retain them. Considering that the majority of new settlers over the past few decades have been US Jews, they have a lot of political leverage.

@Arctic,

There are a lot of things that could be said regarding your statement. The main one that comes to mind for me is that there are heroes and villains on both sides over there, and to say one side is totaly right or wrong blinds you.

I didn't say that one side is right or wrong, and if you got that impression you're either blind yourself or skimming.
I harbour no ill will against Jews that don't use force to drive people from their lands - it's too late to judge most of them anyway. Making them understand that they live on stolen property is the problem. Australians live on stolen land too. So do Americans.
I'm still allowed to comment.

BFD. Everyone lives on stolen lands. In your example, who do you think the Christians and Muslims stole the land from in the first place?

Except Israel was "property" of the Jewish people(who were then enslaved by the Egyptians and a large amount of the established Arabic nations) long before the Arabic tribes started settling permanently in the area that would be later marked as Palestine.

So, they're living on property they've stolen from people who've stolen it from them in their absence due to being enslaved and scattered to the four winds. Neat.

I mean we can get down to brass tacks and say it belongs to the Canaanites and Phillistines. There's arguments that the Canaanaites were actually a Semitic tribe that was part of the exodus and Phillistines were early iron age Greek colonists. so technically, it all belongs to Greece.

Go Greece, go Greece go!

YO DAKKA DAKKA!

Israel still has racist national policies, and this is a different century. "It used to be ours" is a schoolchild excuse. I'm not saying there aren't reasonable Israelis and/or Jews. Before the mandate many groups lived in relative peace for a long time - war was not constant, and anyone who thinks it was is an idiot. War has seen everywhere.
Arabs and Jews both legitimately owned property in the region, but the mandate caused this conflict, and it is a modern problem that should be resolved in a modern fashion. Supporting current Israeli nationalist policy is just disgusting, and BOTH SIDES need to change their approaches.

No they lived in Dhimmitude-servitude to Islam. The peace of the shackled slave.

So killing women and children is the better approach?
Now the truth of Hamas and Hezbullah comes out. Under your your system Jews will die until there is no Israel. When there is no Israel the rest of the Jews will die. They beg to disagree.

First off, they have nationalist policies. Every nation has these, wherein they put their nation first. It's kind of important to do that, seeing as how it's your nation and your people.

Why should Israel give a flying crap about Palestinians? They've made peace overtures before, and they get rockets fired at them and a terrorist organization elected into power.

Hamas (whose broad policies I largely disagree with) and the escalated violence was a result of the peace-oriented PLO being seen as 'not doing enough,' whilst the US interests in the middle east had the PLO itself transform into a 'terrorist organisation'. Where else were the Palestinians supposed to go? Were they not supposed to fight back and defend their families?

Israeli nationalist policy is a very different thing to what the rest of us live under. Do some research, Kanlu. I understand what you're trying to say but it's just not the same ideology.

Frazzled, again - this is a modern world, and you're fanning the flame of war from your armchair. Are you a Jew? Why do you care? Why would peace not be preferable? If Mexicans drove you off your dirt-pile, would you just say 'oh well' and do nothing?

I will point out to you Arctik that the past few cease-fires have all been broken by the same party: Hint. It's not Israel. Violence in the region is perpetuated by radical Palestinians who attack Israel, prompting increasingly heavy handed responses from Israel. I'm not going to accept them as victims when they're responsible for their own situation. Britain offered them their own country in 1949. They refused. Guess that hasn't worked out so well for them, huh?

It is almost as if this is a complicated issue that will require some serious consideration and nuanced thinking rather than simple platitudes such as "Palestinians are terrorists" or "Jew controlled media". Going to need more than a bumper sticker mentality.

Exactly. Hamas and Hezbullah are what you're defending. Again, they, and evidently you, will not bre happy until there is no Israeli state, adn the greater slaughter has started. Israel exists. Its not going anywhere. The jews there are not just going to collectively slash their wrists or let Hamas do it for them. And Hamas/Hezzbullah won't stop because they are being supported by powers who don't want it to stop so the killing will continue. No peace in our time.

You are completely wrong. Israel never stopped breaking the most foundational terms of the Palestinian side's peace 'agreement' which was to cease the expansion of settlements. Over the years this has enraged the people whose families were, for example, being bulldozed in their very homes. Sure, a bulldozer isn't a conventional weapon, but Israel has never stop expanding, persecuting non-Jewish Israelis (which is the result of the Jewish Nationality laws I have mentioned) or brokering anything but the most lop-sided 'peace' agreements imaginable.
I'm trying to be neutral but the bias in here is incredible - there are two sides to this and both are far from innocent. There's a reason a third-party has had to broker peace talks.

That would mean gak if the PLO weren't killing civilians before even the '67 war. How do you think Arafat became head of the PLO in the first place? How do you think it started?

Except it's not them "fighting back and defending their families". They just want to exterminate the Jewish people, period.

There's a huge difference between the two ideas munchkin.

Israeli nationalist policy is also set up for a country that gets rockets shot into schools, suicide bombers on crowded public buses, shooters in parks. It's a different policy for a different world, bud. Try doing some of your own research sometime before telling someone to do some research.

The Palestinians are the cats paws for the hardline Arabic nations surrounding Israel. They don't want peace. They want the Jewish people, worldwide, exterminated. They want the world in a state of ass-backwards fundamentalist Islam.
