Tin Tin is a reporter who travels around the globe fighting bad guys with his dog and his best buddy, a drunk old captain. It's known and loved across Europe.

It also has some (in hindsight) awesomely racist stories, like when Tin Tin wen to Africa or the Orient.

Amidst the mists and coldest frosts he thrusts his fists against the posts and still insists he sees the ghosts.

It would have been better if French-Belgian people were cast. I hope Jamie Bell can do a passable accent.

Fixed.

Life does not cease to be funny when people die any more than it ceases to be serious when people laugh.

They're boy's own adventure type things, lots of running from bad guys and getting shot at, all while solving a mystery. Good fun stuff.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

Brilliant cartoons, which often have an Indiana Jones sort of story line.

Some of the earlier books are casually racist in the way that much of the western world was at that time.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

All I remember of Tin Tin is how boring the cartoon was.

Also he is extremely lucky.

And hijacks trains.

He also appears to be high most of the time.

Also the times his dog talks to him.

Hello! How very peculiar indeed, my dog talks to me too!

She keeps saying "Throw ball" over and over again. I can't figure out why...

Yes, the early stuff tended to be a bit racist and if you wanted to, you could make fun about Tim managed to get tied up at least twice in pretty much every book but they're still fun.

Adrift within the vortex of my imagination.

It was a different age, 'racism' while technically correct colloquially implies hatred and so I would use a different descriptor. It can certainly be seen as offensive to Africans, and Arabs, and is controvercial enough to provoke lawsuits and stock relocation from time to time, but not a withdrawal.

I'm a bit freaked out by the pics in the same way I found Beowulf a bit freaky. I don't think "photo real" is quite the term to define the effect.

However, I am a massive Tintin fan. Herge was an artisic genius. Check out some of the drawings of cars and planes in the books and see how accurate they are. It all adds to the sense of realism.

Please don't attach non wargaming posts directly to Dakka, they will be deleted and then see how your post is left looking eh ?

I am left bemused by the inconsistent policing of pic posting. I assume that was you Reds8n

I personally prefer Boro Tintin. It's basically just Tintin cartoons dubbed over with filth by a person from Middlesbrough, which just so happens to be my hometown.

Warning! VERY NSFW - Contains extremely foul (but also quite amusing) language.

York/London(for weekends) oh for the glory of the british rail industry

The racism criticism, has to be put into context, it was written a while ago and Herge has gone on record to say he was wrong and was effected by the 'west European culture is superior' belief of the time, he has also rewritten alot of pages.

Just think how people would react to Shakespeare's portrayal of Shylock if it was written now.

To be fair most of the racism is pretty tame, compared to some of the hateful content coming out at the time.

It is actually quite amazing how much they have chopped out for the DVD releases of old cartoons because they are considered "racist" now.

I thought they were releasing the racist versions, because they are considered part of our History and can show us how far we have come as as society.

You would think so but being PC sometimes is more important than historical documents. You know that if you never show a blackface joke, it never happened, and everyone will get along much better.

people keep saying that the Tintin was racist...

these people have not read up on The Blue Lotus

While there were some racist overtones in some of the earlier stories, the Blue Lotus story shows that Herge can recognize his own mistakes and learn.

on the other hand... Tintin is definitely gay tho

He's a guy with a tiny toy dog who's main female relationship in the books is with Madame Castafiore (a rich matronly soprano)

mwehehehehe.

Actually people said that it was racist in the sense that what was committed to the page at the time was fairly common and within societal norms. It is looking back that we see how inconsiderate and thoughtless it could be to represent people in such a way. The racism has to be put into context, and has been pointed out (over and over and over) in this thread.
