I've been considering DE since I started playing 40k, and only now do I really have the option to
So would I be a band-wagon hopper if I started playing them? inb4 "Play whatever you like"....
The codex is really nice, and of course, so are the models. Also, after playing CSM for so long, 9 points for your basic guy is like heaven to me
So anyway, I know for a fact I'll be picking up DE, but I'm basically just asking if I would be regarded as: "that guy' when I play at my FLGS.

Unhealthy Competition With Other Legions

If everyone thought like you do, there would be no DE players. Or marine players, IG players, Tau players, ect.
Relax, it is a new race, and everyone who is going to play has to join sometime. It is only a bandwagon if everyone jumps off at the end. You are only "that guy" if you do this at EVERY codex release (or it seems like it)

You would only be a bandwagoner if you jump off when then next codex or two comes out.
I wouldn't bother what people say. If they said anything, just say that you always wanted to do DE but the minis were to ugly to start with.
That is my excuse, but sadly, I lost my job, so I can't start a new army now.

yes, you're only a bandwagoner if you do this repeatedlyi. However you're a chaos player and may essentially pick 1 army to swap to without anyone being able to say anything about it

If you like the army and the models, get a plan together, build it and play it. If you pick your starting stuff up soon, you'll be able to get that painted and then pick up some cheaper models from the real army jumpers.

I wouldn't either. If you wanna play DE go for it, and don't sweat what other people say. They are not going to be the ones buying the minis, spending the time painting, and playing them, so who cares what they say.

Not at all. If you play them for the soul purpose of them being the best army around, then maybe it could be considered. But if its because you like the models/fluff/playstyle or whatever then i say say go for it!

Meh I'd only say you'd be "That guy/girl" if you do it for every codex and hop off if they turn out to be not so good. (Remember they are unproven & no FaQ yet)
I was hoping to start DE but wanted new models, I still may but the codex doesn't really suit my play style so I'm gonna wait for the FaQ and see how it looks then.

I don't think you would, since it's not like there were many DE players from before the codex came out, at least in relation to other armies like Orks or Marines. If you jumped on Marines, then Space Wolves, then Blood Angels all while using the same models with new rules, then you'd be a real bandwagoner. As is you just want to play with new toys; can't blame you.

Shaman's right. it depends on your commitment. Are you someone who's going to shell out a few hundred on Ebay and get a second-hand army just to play for the rules, or are you going to commit effort into this and stay with this even after 6th edition comes out? There's another thread about people jumping on the bandwagon too, so if you make this army truely yours, it's not bandwagoning.

The most annoying thing for me (and actually the only annoying thing - the more the better) of new DE players, are the WAAC gamers that some months ago were gakking about DE. That hipocrisy is disgusting. And they are also wrong if they think DE are an auto-win army.
Play any army if you like it. Thinking only about winning in a hobby as big as this... well, I think it's just lame.
So, my answer to OP depends in how he/she sees him/herself.
"Like the army" -> Go!
"I'm gonna smash Blood Angels! And then I'll swap again with the next new codex!ps: I'm selling BA" -> Burn!

One of the nice things about dark eldar before the new codex was the fact that they were rare and not that many people played them. They were seen as kind of a 'relic' army. But with the new codex and models now they are kind of a 'blinged up bandwagon army'. So you are going to play them because you've always thought they were cool but you couldn't because they were so outdated but now you are going to play them because of the update... well that's the same reason why everyone else is starting to play them. So I think you would be hopping on the bandwagon. There's only one way you wouldn't be hopping on the bandwagon, that would be if you played dark eldar before the new codex. And perhaps like 4-6 years down the road when dark eldar begins to get outdated. But you'll never have that 'relic' army status again unless they don't update eldar for another 12 years.

I got a few comments like this when the new BA dex came out, as i had previously been playing orks, BA were my first 40k army when i was 12 and when i returned to the hobby at 22 they hadnt had a dex for 8 years then got a crappy WD one where they couldnt get out of their Rhino's so naturally i didnt feel like collecting them, I dabbled with orks and SW who i'd always liked alongside sisters who were also getting no love, I was told that BA were'nt getting done any time soon so i started collecting orks proper, then when the new dex came out i was excited and bought it, even though some of it is pure cheese and i hate the Space Vampires theme, (Matt Ward there will be a reckoning between us for your defilement of the most noble of chapters) So now i collect Orks and BA and Ellysians (no one can call me TFG there cos they can be a bitch to get right) and seeing as how i tend to suck whatever army im playing i rotate between them and ignore what everyone says

This whole bandwagoning discussion is pretty slowed anyway imho. It is your money, do with it what you want and if people do not want to play you they do not. It is their legitimate choice to decide whom to spend their time with after all and that is fine. Luckily there are usually plenty of people around that do not suffer from those reservations so you should be fine. ^^

They look lovely, the Codex is full of fun things - they are enjoyable to play - having played old and new.
There a few people who constantly sell old armies to get the latest thing - but even then - who cares - if they play fair and we have fun its not even a small deal.
buy your DE and love'em

Here is how you tell if you are a bandwagon jumper: If you sell the army off within a year or when the next army re-release comes. Anything else is just you playing/trying what you want.
No shame in giving something you want a fair try, and getting rid of it after you really try to make it work for you. But if you just try it out a few times and then sell it or sell it when the next codex comes, then you are on the bandwagon.
