So I just got home from Donating blood this evening, and I began to wonder if many of us war-gamers donate.

PS, Sorry for misleading you followers of Khorne.

By donating blood, I assume you mean volutarily giving it to some medical center rather than most of us gamers dripping it on the floor after using a not too sharp xacto knife.

I do. Quite often. I'm B-, which is pretty rare (though not the rarest). When I'm donating, I'll do the Double Reds donation, which means that they take twice the amount of blood they normally do, centrifuge it, and then return the white cells and plasma back to my system. Plasma can be universally donated, red cells are more specific. Unfortunately, I have thin vein walls, which usually means they can't return the plasma. When they try to inject it back in, my vein swells up, and it's very painful. When they can't, I've essentially lost twice the normal amount of blood, so I'm usually not doing anything else for the day.

I think the worst was when I donated, couldn't get my plasma back, and then carried a girl I fancied around on my shoulders for a bit. The one and only time I've ever passed out.

I tried to once so I could get out of PT, but I lived in Europe during the early 90's, so I could potentially be carrying some crazy mad cow something. I tried to convince them I probably would have died already, but the rules are the rules.

Which is all really unfortunate because all of this was going directly overseas to the troops that need it and I'm O-, which is the universal donor.

In Japan, foreigners are forbidden to give blood.

Which is OK. My blood would be too awesome for them anyhow.

Wow, so Japan is pretty racist, eh? How are they allowed to get away with it? The Germans aren't.

On-Topic: Due to past and current substance abuse, my blood is, quite frankly, not worth the paper it's printed on.

I've been going since just after my 18th birthday. Although to be honest the platelet donation setups freak me out, so I'll probably just stick with the blood.

I am petrified of needles to the point where I will start involuntarily shaking when exposed to one, even if use of it on me isn't intended; so I could potentially do it, but I will not because i'm terrified.

I actually don't know my blood type either, and nor do my parents.

Do you get T shirts there when you donate. For a period of time I had a rack full of them, from donations to the blood bank. Then came law school, and of course I had to start making withdrawals after that. You are getting drowsier and drowsier...

I've given blood about 6-7 times. No longer doing so as I have developed (or rather exacerbated) a fear of needles through doing so.

I repeatedly donated blood when I worked at the Hospital.
However was informed I could no longer donate after I was bitten (on several occasions) by patients who had Hep/HIV.
I never contracted either of the viruses, but for some reason, was no longer permitted to donate blood...precautionary matter perhaps?

I gave blood when requested to do so while in Baghdad. I would happily do it again for servicemen of any coalition nation.

I would probably do it if they paid you for it, maybe 50 quid a pint or something?

But being a ridiculously cynical bad tempered ex-soldier with the world view of a 65 year old Grandad i wouldnt do it for free for the NHS.

We keep all kinds of scum alive! And half the buggers who use our hospitals are health tourists or something. Far from thinking "yay! I might save someones life!" i tend to think "this blood might go to Ian fething Huntley or an Islamic terrorist or some fething African immigrant with AIDs or something"

That sounds somewhat absurd written down.. but feth em! If the army came round your house and took it specifically for people you might like in real life then they could crack on.

E-blood?

On a related note, can't we just start draining cadavers of their blood on death? How long does blood stay 'good'?
