There's so many good songs out there!. Though I can say with confidence that Jeremy Soule and Nobuo Uematsu are the best things to happen to video game music ever.

Right now I'm gonna say Morrowind's main theme, the one at the title screen. But that's subject to change since there are tons of excellent songs out there.

"Order. Unity. Obedience. We taught the galaxy these things, and we shall do so again."
"They are not your worst nightmare; they are your every nightmare."
"Let the galaxy burn!"

Akira Yamaoka is a genius. With the Silent Hill franchise, he was truly the first to create 'ambient horror' style music by layering together sound effects that were completely devoid of any melody. Most horror music before that relied completely on orchestral swells to create tension. Though his other forms of music leave something to be desired, he still remains one of my idols, and it's a shame to see him depart from Silent Hill with Shattered Memories.

Hitoshi Sakimoto and Masaharu Iwata are by far my favorite orchestral videogame composers. The entire soundtrack for Final Fantasy Tactics is an incredibly solid and consistent display of an intricate knowledge of music theory. It's a shame that the game's soundtrack was never performed by an actual orchestra, as that would improve it's merit tenfold. Even so, anyone craving great atmospheric videogame music cannot go wrong with the brilliant FFT soundtrack. I promise that no other videogame is capable of pushing your emotions quite that far with it's soundtrack alone.

If you have played FFX (Final Fantasy X) all the way through you will know how amazing the soundtrack is. In fact, Nobuo Uematsu is amazing in general. Although FFX is perhaps not the best, or even my favorite Final Fantasy I still think the soundtrack deserves some credit.

This is from FF9 but still Uematsu's work

I cannot pick a favorite, they are all too good.

If we're going to put Nobuo Uematsu on display, here are a few of my favorite pieces by him:

Uematsu is the absolute master at creating infectious hooks. I don't care who you are, his songs will get stuck in your head, even if you only hear them once. I still remember most of them from as far back as thirteen years ago.

Pain is an illusion of the senses, Despair an illusion of the mind.

The song at the end of Plants Vs. Zombies was pretty cool... I think my all time favorite though would have to be 'Eyes On Me' from Final Fantasy VIII.

Where to begin, where to begin?

I think it's telling when you've got a game-cd in your car stereo so one of the first I'll mention is the music for Mechwarrior 2, very atmospheric, great use of drums, horns and strings plus electronic sounds. Would love an orchestral version of it. This one is my favorite:

The Zelda series also has some magnificant music. Here's one of my favorites orchestrated.

Others already brought up FF so this is one of my (many) favorites.

And there's just so much more. Secret of Mana, Settlers 1, some of the Civilization songs, anything that can make me stop playing the game and just listen to the music really.

Anything by Frank Klepacki really, but the current ear lovers are:

Great tunes, used ingame at great moments to really enforce the tone of the game. Far Away is played when John is forced to go to Mexico, Compass is played when he finally rides home and Already Dead, well just play the game.

I don't know the name of the song, but it was the one that kicked in during the introduction to Borderlands. There was just something about it that fit perfectly at the time.

Final Fantasy and Legend of Zelda are usually the best. I especially like the Forest Temple music from Ocarina of Time.

Its weird. Its dark and happy at the same time. At least for me it is.

Sadly can't link any vids from youtube as I'm work blocked.

However my fave pieces are without doubt.

Halo 3: Finish the Fight - I had the announcement trailer on almost daily through the end of 06-07. It probably my fave piece of in game music ever, as soon as I hear those notes on the piano I'm awestruck.

Silent Hill 3: Rain of Brass Petals - in particular the three voice edit, but in general its an amazing piece of music.

Silent Hill 2: Theme of Laura - Haunting piece of music, part of the thing I love in the SIlent Hill games is the music within, really connects you to the story.

World of Warcraft: Grizzly Hills - Not really sure well, but there is something serene about the music in Grizzly Hills and I'd often go there to farm/skin (when there are much better places) just to listen to it.

I'm sure there are many others I am forgetting, but those four stick in my mind the most.

If I get some time tonight after work I'll try and link some vids in.

I think it may be the same song as the Temple of Time song mentioned above but it was from the Legend of Zelda Ocarana of Time game I just can't remember which song/spell it was.

The original Mario theme song.

Steamboat Willy from the Kingdom Hearts (I know it's the cartoon but it was in a game and I think that was it)

I almost forgot about the Diablo and Diablo 2 soundtracks. They are thoroughly amazing, and there's nothing quite like them that you can find anywhere else. Diablo 2 is one of the few VG OSTs I'll actually listen to outside of the context of a game. It's too bad that they couldn't hire the same composer to do Diablo III, and instead stuck with the same boring orchestral compositions that you'll find in WoW. That's one of the things that kept me playing for so long. The same composer also did the Starcraft soundtrack, and Starcraft II's soundtrack was awful because he wasn't involved in any way.

Tekken has also always had an amazing soundtrack, dating all the way back to the first game. It's one of the few long-running series that has never disappointed me with any of it's OSTs. Every song manages to get the blood pumping to exactly the right degree, and gives you a steady beat to work with, no matter it's tone. It's also always been an interesting fusion of electronica and various international influences, which grants it enough unique attributes that it can stand on it's own. Plus, it was using actual recorded instruments as early as Tekken 3.

You know, for most of the video game music pieces the memories of the actual game are a big factor in liking the music as well. I'm immediately stomping around in a mech once I hear one of those MW2 (Mechwarrior 2 dagnabbit! It was there first!) songs.

So music belonging to a game I haven't played has to 'work harder' in order to be liked.

But I must say, that Portal end-song 'Still Alive' is just great! I've had it on repeat for about the last couple of hours.

....I've also got a strange yearning for cake........and playing Portal for the very first time.....

Intro piece for Chrono Cross. A really cool song to watch live, by the way - watching a guy go nuts on the violin throughout the song is just awesome.

Another favorite from the Chrono series, this one from the original Chrono Trigger. For me, it was one of those themes that just made me think "I've made it, this is it."

A really epic intro song to one of the greatest, most addictive game series of all time: Civilization. And it's a version of the Lord's Prayer in Swahili!
