Here they go again. Members of the anti-gay Westboro Baptist Church plan to protest outside the funeral of 9-year-old Christina Taylor Green, one of six people killed Saturday in the Tucson, Ariz., shootings.
But some in area are planning a counter-action to protect the grieving family from the unwelcome picketers and their slurs.
Christin Gilmer of Tucson told CNN her hometown is a "loving, peaceful community" and the prospect of a protest by the small Kansas church was a "nightmare." In response, Gilmer said she is planning an "angel action" -- a group of volunteers wearing 8-by-10-foot angel wings to visually shield mourners from the demonstrators, who typically number no more than a dozen but hold aloft offensive signs.

Christina Green memorial in TucsonWestboro Baptist, a small church in Topeka, pickets at funerals of military veterans and people who have died of AIDS because its members say their deaths are God's punishment for America's tolerance of homosexuality. Salon reported that a flier posted by the church on its website regarding the Tucson protest declared "God hates Catholics" -- the little girl's family is Catholic -- and "God Hates Fags." The church website also features a video with founder/pastor Fred Phelps thanking God for the deadly shootings.
In Tucson, they're understandably upset about that. Some 4,500 have joined a "Show Support" Facebook page started by 20-year-old Chelsea Cohen, a University of Arizona senior. Cohen says she isn't organizing a counter-protest but rather a demonstration of silent support. "We plan on being completely silent, and we're asking people not to bring signs or make comments about the Westboro Baptist Church," she said.

And whilst you're pointing and shouting at the boogeyman in the corner, you're missing the burglar coming in through the window.
Well, Duh! Because they had a giant Mining ship. If you had a giant mining ship you would drill holes in everything too, before you'd destory it with a black hole
I don't see why a law can't be passed that no demonstration take place within a reasonable distance (half a mile?) of a funeral service. Obviously this has many different implications, but it could be a start.
Starve them of their news coverage and they will die out eventually.

Hmmm something is going on here.....Oh.... it seems there is some dispute over video taping of some sort......Frazz is really upset now..........wait a minute......whats he go there.......is it? Can it be?....Frazz has just unleashed his hidden weiner dog from his mini bag, while quoting shakespeares "Let slip the dogs the war!!" GG

I think of the mess I'd make of them if I were that girl's father. I'm sure when I'm done I'd be dead by police gunfire and people would be feeling sorry for those protesters.

Why the protest? Further, WHAT are they protesting? Typically you have a goal or a series of demands you wish made when you protest.
Mental illnes can be hard to fathom sometimes. Those afflicted with the "religious fanaticism" version often act in illogical, offensive and disturbing ways...
I am both selfish and chaotic. I value self-gratification and control; I want to have things my way, preferably now. At best, I'm entertaining and surprising; at worst, I'm hedonistic and violent.
And yeah, they're horrible people. I used to be a hardcore Christian, but nowadays I'm not and I have a lot of gay friends. Looking back on some of the views I had, I feel like I was so narrow minded...
Another mission, the powers have called me away. Another chance to carry the colours again. My motivation, an oath I've sworn to defend. To win the honour of coming back home again.
People need to actually do their research Due to their religious beliefs (predestination; basically they're the only one getting into heaven), they still believe they have to do "god's work" in educating people and letting them know they're horrible sinners, even though it won't do any good, that way god can't be blamed for their insolence. It's a really miserable existence and I feel sorry for the brainwashed congregation because it has to be pretty hopeless.

Same story on this end. Most of my family wants little to do with me.

Amen, these people are despicable...the only "Angel action" they deserve would be a group of Hells Angels stamping them into pulp.
Not a bad idea.... We should convince them that the Hell's Angels are a huge group of homosexual, catholic, AIDS ridden people and they should picket one of their get togethers!

I would literally sell my soul to see/participate in that...
....I know we're not supposed to advocate violence here on Dakka...but I guarantee, on the day that the people of Westboro Babtist Church get what they deserve ...I'm going to get falling down drunk from celebrating.

Absolutely despicable! I normally don't wish harm upon others, even low-lifes, but you know what I hope every single on of those brainwashed morons die in a bus crash on the way over!
Shhhhhh...be bwery bwery quiet, I'm huntin' hewetics of the Empewa. Huhuhuhuuu...
(1) The Westboro Baptists are truly despicable people but advocating violence against them is not appropriate to Dakka. That was the one and only warning we're going to give in this thread.
(2) Hating gay people is not a part of being Christian so please do not make offensive correlations between the Christian religion (as opposed to its practitioners) and prejudice against homosexuals.
Further, why haven't their rampages across America to spread their perversive evil been halted by a federal law or something?
First Amendment, no matter how vile the speech may be, it is still protected by the First Amendment. These people should be ignored, it would be the quickest way to marginalize their influence and make their demostrations dry up. I find their absolute disregard for anyone's feelings or lifestyles appalling, but they have a right to their beliefs. However sick and twisted they be.
OP, they crossed that line long ago. Protesting the funerals of the soldiers who are sworn to defend their sacred right of free speech is heinous at best.

Oops, I think they may be forgetting to pass this on to the congegration.
I'm sure it is a simple oversight.
Maybe now that it has been clarified they can start to demand more Christian behavior from their followers...

Personally, I cannot identify any part of their beliefs as Christian. Similarly, if a person were to worship a shoe that he called Jesus I would have trouble identifying him as a Christian.
I was going to make a joke about being a shoe worshiper and being offended an Manchu's last statement, but I realized that's just setting myself up to be called a foot-fetishist.
But yeah. Westboro is a disgusting group of... organisms. I'm not sure "people" is a moniker these nutjobs deserve.
Calvinism is a type of Christianity... They use scripture to back up their beliefs. There's no difference between them believing and acting and anyone else, besides the fact that they're more likely to be viewed as raging deutschbags I think the big difference is the type of person, or in the case of the young ones, the amount and type of brainwashing.
