Some good stuff came out.
Iron Maiden's Final Frontier was awesome (saw them do most of the songs from the newest two albums live at Sonisphere. It was awesome).
Nightmare by A7x got me into them, because it was pretty good.
Lots of great metal last year but it seems like most of it was in the fall.
Maiden tops the list like they always should. Blind Guardian... Apocalyptica... Flotsam & Jetsam and Forbidden were the 2 bestest comebacks of the year. Volbeat's new one was great, though I liked their previous albums a lil better. Kataklysm's new one was great. Sons of Liberty was a decent side album by the Iced Earth guy. And, Pantera's Cowboy's from Hell had it's 20th anniversary reissue. Damn, I'm old. I graduated high school when that was released the first time... :(
I wish I could say Halford, but there's really only 1 good song on the whole album :(
Dark Days - Poisonwood (at that point in time an unsigned band, released electronically and all the songs are avaiable to listen to on Youtube. However they have a new vocalist since then.)
While 2009 was an amazing year for Metal (With debuts from both Animals as Leaders and Exivious), 2010 left a lot to be desired. The only metal album that was released last year that I really enjoyed was Veil of Maya's [id]. It's a perfect blend of Metalcore and Technical Metal, and it's much more consistant than their last album, The Common Man's Collapse. Here are a couple songs that I really love from [id]:
Mark Okubo is an absolutely amazing musician (he writes all of their music). Thematically, Veil of Maya is quite unlike anything else. They had Michael Keene from The Faceless produce this album, and it really shows.
Other than that, Bulb (Misha Mansoor of Periphery) released some stuff last year that I enjoy, but he's constantly releasing new material. I just hope they release an instrumental album from his side project Haunted Shores, as they're thoroughly amazing without the inclusion of vocals. Check them out:

It seems I've forgotten about a few releases. Even though they're not exactly at the top of my playlist, they still definitely deserve an honorable mention.
First off, Cloudkicker released Beacons last year. They're an interesting fusion of post rock and djent, produced by one guy, and all their music is released for free on his website. This is their best album yet, and while it's not solid gold from front to back, it's better than most of the other crap that was released in 2010. It certainly doesn't hurt matters any that it was free.
Elitist released their debut EP, Caves, last year. Yet another combination of Metalcore/Tech Metal. Elitist's vocalist kind of annoys me, but their actual band is so sick that it doesn't matter. I'm looking forward to hearing more material from them.
For those of you who enjoy classic 80's metal such as Iron Maiden, you'd probably enjoy Arsis' Starve for the Devil. I'm not the biggest fan of their new direction (They used to display aspects of nearly every genre of metal simultaneously), but I'm glad that their production value is finally becoming decent.

I bought only two 2010 release metal albums. The new Therion one and the new Slayer one.
I liked the new Therion one, but I don't know where they are going with their dandy-esque personnas. There are a few songs on the album that I like, but it is nowhere near as good as their stuff from a few years ago. I think they might be getting a bit too high on their own gak. I don't know. I'd still see them if they came to Japan. They are great live.
As for the Slayer album, it's OK. Slayer hasn't rocked my face off since Divine Intervention, and that was like almost 20 years ago. I definitely thought it was better than their last few albums, but it still wasn't totally awesome. It gets Ipod time at the gym when I'm on the rowing machine. But, I wouldn't listen to it in my car on the way to the grocery store.
Most of the CDs I picked up the past year were older albums I had lost or given away or had been re-issued. Ministry, the Elf remasters with Dio ( \,,/ ), Budgie, etc. A lot of lost 70s hard rock/metal. You remember the 70s don't you? The high water mark of Western Society?

Speaking of the 70's, I am going to BOC concert soon, should be awesome.

Aye, NotB was way better than Powerslave - not just Hallowed... but the title track and Run to the Hills - pure awesome.
