Okay I am getting pretty sick of trying to find some new shows to watch and seeing them get canceled or become crap after a season or 2. So I need some help finding some new shows that are actually worth watching. I really don't care for reality shows or stuff like Pawn Stars or Top Gear. I am more of an x-files kind of guy.
Right now I watch these shows when available:
Dexter Its rare that I enjoy a show after 5 seasons. Dexter seems like the best show in ages. Seriously, who would have thought a serial killer could be so likable?
Ancient Aliens Ok I admit, it has some forged evidence and some BS, but it is an entertaining and interesting show. I have always been a big fan of alien shows.
The Walking Dead Seems off to a great start. Its going to be awhile before the second season starts though. The graphic novel is pretty damn awesome, so if the show follows suit, it should have plenty of content to keep it entertaining for a long time. Besides who doesn't like the concept of a never ending zombie movie? The worse parts of all zombies movies have been that the story ended abruptly.
The Universe Sort of like Ancient Aliens, but filled with more "acceptable" theories. Worth looking into if you are a space nut like me. The show delves into the oddities of the universe like black holes, etc.
Castle Anything with Nathan Fillon in it is good. I hope this one lasts for awhile.
Shows I really liked but hated that they were canceled:
Firefly There isn't much I can say about the stupidity of canceling this show. I enjoyed it while it lasted.
Rubicon Too smart for TV says it all. Probably mirrors too many real world events as well.
Stargate Universe It wasn't going anywhere for awhile and people stopped watching it. Just when it started to pick up they canceled it. Shame.
Capricia I have no idea why this one was canceled. I thought it was a great precursor to Battlestar Galactica
Pushing Up Daisies I liked the concept of this show. A guy could raise the dead for a limited amount of time to solve crimes. It kind of had the feel of something like Little Shop of Horrors.
Lost (Seasons 1-4) I loved the show when it was about the island. Jack had it right, they should have never left the island. Once J.J. Abrams left the show to work on movies, it went to hell. I was sad to see it end and glad at the same time.
Shows I have abandoned:
Fringe I liked it when it was split between filler episodes and the main story. The season before last just focused on the main story and I felt like all the mystery of the fringe science disappeared.
House This is one of the most repetive shows I have watched. I really enjoyed it for the longest time, but after the mental hospistal part I felt like the show was just repeating itself over and over. I might get back into it if Olivia Wilde ever comes back though.
True Blood First two seasons were ok. That last one was awful. Sookie turned into an idiot and her character made no sense whatsoever. That last few episodes were smack worthy. From what I have read on the backs of the novels at Wal-Mart's book section, it doesn't look to get any less stupid.
Shows I am considering:
Madmen I don't know much about it, but A&E is making some good shows, (even the canceled ones). Plus Christina Hendricks is hot.
So does anyone have any suggestions or feedback for new or older shows I might like? Hopefully a lot of people could benefit from these suggestions as well.
Did you ever watch The Outer Limts back in the day?
It had a sort of xfiles vibe going on.
It was a bit hit and miss though, some episodes were good others were fairly woeful/tacky.

I see you don't like reality shows BUT, faceoff on scyfy is pretty entertaining and its scifi oriented. Basically its a bunch of up and coming makeup and special effects people making aliens, hybrids and such. I am enjoying it and I hate reality TV. Comes on Wednesday evenings.
Also mythbusters, its pretty much on everyday at this point, but its a fun show to watch.

I spend more time watching Movies/DVDs than I do watching series/shows but some of the programs I watch are.
The Walking Dead (Really looking forward to the next season).
Anything with Gordan Ramsey.
Mythbusters
Future Weapons
Supernatural (goofy as hell, but I can't stop watching it.)
Futurama
And on occasion
Mad Men
True Blood
Dexter
Scrubs
The Andy Griffith Show.
EDIT:
Completely forgot about Arrested Development, recently rediscovered the show on IFC and watch it whenever it's on.

I am both selfish and chaotic. I value self-gratification and control; I want to have things my way, preferably now. At best, I'm entertaining and surprising; at worst, I'm hedonistic and violent.
My TV watching has been dropping over the years. There's just not as much on TV that can hold my interest.
But, it appears that sitcoms have hit another golden age.
The Office (gets stale at times and falling into "Friends syndrome"
30 Rock (pretty genius actually)
How I Met Your Mother (the premise of telling his kids the story is dumb, but it's a decent TV show)
Parks and Recreation (early episodes struggle a bit, but Season 2 was pretty good and Season 3 has been excellent, IMO)
Community (sometimes cheesy, characters are a little 2D, but it's pretty funny)
Modern Family (this show is absolutely amazing! Funniest thing on TV!)
One of my other favorite shows is Check, Please!, but it's a show about local restaurants in Chicago, so it won't be interesting to anyone not in Chicago, if it even airs.
And, if you like The Universe, you should check out Nova on PBS. It's a bit dryer and less entertaining, but really does a good job of in-depth scientific information (although, it does focus a bit too much on "Pie in the sky" research you find at Universities)
Thanks! This looks like a lot of great suggestions. I guess I have a little more faith in TV now.
@Melchiour: I just checked out some stuff online about it. You are right, that show does look interesting. I will check it out!
@McNutty: Deadwood is one of those series I wanted to see but forgot about. Thanks!
@rubiksnoob: I haven't heard of that one. I will check it out.
Out of everything I have seen lately, Dexter is about the best. If any of you are looking for something to watch and haven't seen it, please check it out.
@Lie to Me: I haven't heard of that one. I will check it out.

Kinda the other way around there. Given that The outer limits* kind of pre-dates the x-files by a couple of decades, it's more accurate to say that X-files was reminiscent of Kolchak AND the outer limits.
*Both the 1960s version and the later one.

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).
Old enough to know better, young enough to not give a ****.
That is not dead which can eternal lie ...
... and yet, with strange aeons, even death may die.

It honestly used to annoy the hell out of me when my friends would drone on about how original and innovative the X-Files where.
I'd inevitable end up dragging out old copies of Kolchak: The night stalker (with I had on VHS then) and climb up on my own soap box.

I was a bit gutted with the last few episodes of Fringe Season Two. Once the other dimension became a significant factor, it lost of a lot its mystery and the gaping plot holes (namely that everyone is duplicated in the other world and seems to have the same job and friends) started to get annoying.
Dexter is my current favourite. Season "Hello. Dexter. Morgan." Four was just sheer excellence. I think Dexter benefits from having a relatively short run of episodes. It means they don't have to pad it out with nonsense (Batista and LaGuerta romantic subplots notwithstanding).

Pretty much my thoughts on Fringe and Dexter. The other dimension became the focal point and I found that I missed the filler episodes.
Dexter almost pissed me off on the first few episodes of Season 5. I about stopped watching it, but by Episode 4 it picks up and eventually becomes of of the best seasons. Best show on TV.
Okay what's the deal with Mad Men? I just tried watching the first two episodes and it is one of the most dry shows I have ever watched. I am beginning to think the only reason people watch this show is for Christina Hendricks.
I only watch Glee. Otherwise, I don't give television much of a chance.
I used to only watch Glee and Lost.
As for old shows, I'm watching Battlestar Galactica Season 1 on Netflix when I paint.
Um. That's it?

I like Criminal Minds, Castle, Walking Dead, Desperate Housewives, Nikita, Royal Pains, Big Bang Theory, Bleep my Dad Says, How I met Your Mother, and That 70's Show. I'm also watching this weird Nickelodeon show called House of Anubis.

Oh, and Archer, which just started season 2 supposedly.
Breaking Bad is a bad ass show. I watched one episode in season 3, was really curious what the hell was going on, and now Im totally hooked after watching the first 2 seasons.
Being Human so far seems like its a good one. Ive only just started watching this one, but Im digging it so far, its also funny at times which is a plus
