As far as what You get and its overall value, not necessarily how fun it is to build, I'd say carnafex,Nid Warriors and Devastator squad for SM.

As far as fun, I'd say carnifex again.

Dark Eldar Warriors is great for its exchangability with the other DE kits, and the fact that it actually comes with all the special weapons you can put on the squad, so you can have lances for once without paying for separate models!! They are also les than $30 for a box of ten, so its a pretty good price also.

1) Possessed. You need a Chaos murtation or wargear for your HQ's? Its here.

2) Tactical marines- Can pose into ANY SM army (barring GK ofc) and hell, the new BA's and SW's kits are designed to have extra bits for this box! That seals it as one of the most versitile and best buys imo

3) Leman Russ sets (both). Its a giant tank. With many big guns in the box. And its pretty damn fun to build. Did I mention its a TANK?

Eye of Terra.

I'm glad some folks are putting their reasons for their choices. The OP's question is very open ended.

I had to ask myself 10 best kits rated by which criteria?

Easiest to put together?

Best bang for the buck?

Best looking?

Most utility?

This is a great question, and especially great for the numbers of fans who don't play, but love the models.

If you're not looking at GW kits specifically, the Wargames Factory Shock Troopers box comes with the following:

18 Special weapons arms
18 shotgun Arms
72 heads including 6 Cthulu heads
18 Assault rifle arms
18 Bodies
Loads of knives, magazines, and canteens

Whole lot of convertibles there.

i know its not really a kit but the csm battleforce is great aswell. If you mix up the parts you can make 23 csm plus a rhino. Thats a small but legal army! Buy it online with a discount and you win two times!

Hmm. lots of different options to go with. I always liked how Fire warriors looked, really clean models. In terms of best for coolness factor, I'd probably say the new Dark Eldar Incubi. Best models I've seen out in awhile.

Fun to put together is orks all the way. It's easy to convert and customize with the greenskins, and with all the extra bits you get in the kits, every ork can look individual.

After putting together my first box of the new GK terminators last night, I have to point out that. So many options. My only major complaint is that there's not enough psycannons in the box. Hell, they're considerably better than the old metal ones, which says a lot, considering that those old metal terminators were my favourite models from GW up until... now.

I agree with Lord Gir, and I'd also like to add the heavy weapons team.

One box of 2 dudes gives you a spare 4 arms doing something more interesting than holding a lasgun, 4 extra heavy weapons, and a ton of other useful bitz like sand bags, shovels, binoculars, and the like. Plus, they also give you things like shouting heads and crouching legs which can be useful elsewhere in your army.

The bitz:cost ratio on these guys is insane.

You're completely right here. A single team box will give you 3 HW teams (Lascannon, Autocannon, Missile Launcher) if you've got a couple spare models and some bits.

1) Gretchin, love the wee guys.
2) BT upgrade sprue, lots of good options.
This is getting hard now...
3) Wraithlord, lovely lovely model.
4) Dire Avengers, enough pieces to make an extra 2 models provided you've got spare legs.
5) Lootas and Burnas, plenty of pieces extra.
Oh jeez, bear with me here this is annoying...
6) The razorback kit, same price as a rhino but with a turret toting lascannons or HBs.
7) Seer Council, nice sculpts.
8) Tactical marines, they have enough options to make a diferent squad every time with different poses.
9) Eldar Fire Prism/ Night Spinner.
10) Devestator Squad, Heavy weapons FTW!

Ah can add some more kits I feel really stand out for more practical reasons (Gir> maths work)

4)Skyray has to be there, I mean all the bitz in the box you can build either a hammerhead, skyray or a devilfish! I always feel needed to point this out to new Tau players in my local GW, £5 for an extra mound of bitz is pretty sweet.

Infact now I think about it, GW has a habit of making kits which over lap, Razorbacks are just rhino's with an extra sprue, and Chaos Land Raiders are seriously just a normal loyalist land raider+ spiky bitz sprue. Anyone notice any such inconsistency in the kits?

Demolisher kit is definitely in the top 10. One kit that includes all of the competitive choices for the chassis (Plas boat, Demolisher, etc.) PLUS the ability to magnetize and switch between them. This is huge.

The Land Raider Crusader/Redeemer kit allows you to build one or the other. The Demolisher kit allows you to switch between any of the permutations.

Tier 1 is the new Tactical.

I like the CSM Possessed, just to add detail and variation to the Chaos Lord or to your 'regular' guys. I've seen some amazing results by mix/matching with the 'zerkers.

Nobz, also, gives you so many options and so much cool stuff!

Space Wolves box is up there for the same reason.

The new Grey Knight kits seem really nice, with plenty of options and cool bitz.

Those are really the ones that stand out to me.

How do I roll?

All of those are good reasons ... unless it's because you want to eat them... now that I think about it, it would still be more expensive than caviar but def cheaper than unicorn meat

The Carnifex kit is fantastic. Every option (though a lot of them do nothing since 5th edition), excellent detail and very easy to build.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned the Valkyrie yet...I think it is a pretty cool kit, with a lot of nice detail inside and out. Plus, it looks like it could actually fly!

Also have to put in a plug for the Manticore kit...again, great detail, and the Deathstrike option is a nice (if seldom used) option.

Personally, I kind of like the Chaos Rhino kit. You get enough extra bits in there to EASILY convert a 2nd rhino, possibley a 3rd if you're creative/frugal.

Rhino itself assembles pretty easily too. Just a nice kit.

I'm not like them, but I can pretend.

The manticore kit. Such a nice design, easy to build and very easy to make detachable missiles. (No magnets needed, just some sprue on the inside of the holes and tiny amounts of blutack).

Hmmm, the shadowsword kit. It's just... good.

Waiting for my shill money from Spiral Arm Studios

for me the best kits are,

all dreadnought kits. completely compatable with all other Dred kits and the new ones usually have multiple arms allowing for easy swaps.

DA upgrade kit. soooo many bits and actually enough bodies to make like 10 marines. you just need extra bases(and GW convieniantly always gives you like twice as many bases as needed for each kit)

Razorback. it's a rhino, it's a razorback, its a rhino, its a razorback... it's like C.S. Goto without the awful fluff.
