There are a couple threads out there that are talking about ancestry. One of them made me remember that my grandmother used to tell me that I am related to Sam Houston, Mary Queen of Scots, and Genghis Kahn.

I can prove the Sam Houston one, I'm also sure we have royal Stuart blood. Genghis Kahn, I'm not sure where she got that, I mean we do have some Slavic blood, so maybe.

Anybody else got any famous or infamous people in your family tree?

Well, not really. By name, we have a Clinton in the family. By ACTUAL BLOOD however, my dad was adopted, so we dont know.

There was a thread a while back concerning a particular groups strange ideas about the dietary habits of Tyranosaurs ....in which it was proposed the T-Rex's teeth were designed as they were for eating coconuts....since then it's sort of become a ...thing.

My great grandfather was one of the last men to be hung in North Yorkshire. He shot a bloke in Ireland after a drunken argument, fled to England, got caught a few years later and promptly hung.

He deserved it.

I like this if only becuase it doesn't follow the "I'm from someone famous" line of genealogy which is almost always what one hears.

My family on both sides come from Ireland, but my uncle on my dad's side managed to trace the family line and found that their half had actually migrated there from Scotland. Apparently one of my great-great(ect)-grandfathers fought in Robert the Bruce's army.

EDIT: Not as a Lord or anything, more likely a near-toothless peasant.

My grandfather, on my mothers side, were wanted in Sweden for blowing up some bankboxes.

My grandfather, on my fathers side, were in charge of one of the many humanitarian efforts, to rehabilitate koncentraition camp prisoners.

Supose that makes me somewhat neutral.

I've heard that a lot of people in Eastern Europe are related to Genghis Khan as he was quite fond of rape...

With royal blood... well there have been so many generations of bastards it's likely that anyone can pick it up eventually.


A "family secret" I was told about is that we're supposedly descended from Lord Byron, I forget the details but I do recall being quite sceptical.

Somewhere down my family tree is General George "They're just injuns we can't lose!!" Custer.

I was also related to Oprah through marriage for a short time, met a lot of her more direct family members at a funeral though never met her, oh well.

No one special that I am currently aware of, just a boatload of infantrymen having fought everywhere from Ireland to Okinawa.

I know I'm related to one of the Crusader Lords in one of the Crusades, but I don't know which Crusade or which Lord. I think it's Aseline the Wolf Lord, or something like that. He might not even be a Lord, I don't know.

I also know that one of my great great grandfathers was one of the big huge Judges of the Salem Witch Trials. I'm told he was one of the first to come back and say "Oh hey, we were wrong in burning those people", but I have to take that with a grain of salt.

I don't have anyone famous in my bloodline.

My mom's side came over on the mayflower...literally, they're in the ship registry.

My dad's side was sent to England as spies for william the conquerer then when it came time to help with the conquering, they ran off to Ireland, took a bunch of land and flew under the radar.

The history of my last name is pretty amusing.

Turns out a load of Jews moved to north Europe before shifting down Normandy for a few decades, hopped over with ol' bill the conquerer to england before being given a load of land and doing nothing for 9 centuries.

King Edward I on my mothers side.

Not really all that much I know about the rest of the tree though.

The majority of my ancestors came from the Mayflower..

The other portion being my great brothers of Odin.

I don't think there was anybody special that it's rare or uncommon to be related to that i'm also related to.

There's a genetic test for this one actually, though it wouldn't tell you if you're directly or indirectly related to him, it's incredibly common though (.5% of the world's population is decended from him or his close male relatives).

Jesse James was my great great great great something or other's cousin.

Some Teutonic Knight who completely lost the plot somewhere along the way (and thus prompting my fascination with the Order), but aside from that I don't know of anyone interesting.

My dear old Grandpa is 100% bonkers if that counts as 'interesting'.

Half my family was castle owning noble family from normandy, who then invaded Britain, then were sent off as colonists to Australia, and the other half were german immigrants that fought in the revolutionary, civil wars, world wars, and no other war since.

I find it somewhat amusing that all the people that have great historical figures in their bloodline share one common interest: wargaming - and they all joined dakka once ...

That's the only thing I know about my great grandfather and my grandfather (from my father's side). My great grandfather fought in WW1 and my grandfather fought in WW2 and I have a lot of details about him. My grandfather, my gread grandfather, his father and some more from my mothers side were allways engine drivers ...

Anyway, my grandfather was a machine gunner in WW2, saw the outskirts of Moskow, was sent home before gak happened in the east and was a board gunner on one flight on Rommel's plane.

I'd love to know my family history before WW1, though. :/

Nobody special. My Dad's side were basically peasant farmers for as far back as we've looked, though somewhere back there obviously they must have had something to do with the Kennedys who were an offshoot of the O Briens, as far as I'm aware.

My mam's side were slightly more well off farmers and fishermen, that had lived in the same area for hundreds of years. Nothing exciting, not even any real military connections (I have a great-uncle who deserted from the British Navy and then went into hiding, never to be heard from again, though. And some relatives who emigrated during the Famine.)

Antone "Pickles" LaDado, (not sure of the spelling) was a number runner for the Cleveland Mafia in the 40's
George Fusco was a semi famous drummer in Cleveland during the 30-50's he played with many famous big band people and was friends with Bob Hope.
