Being 11 and checking out my new FLGS for the first time, mostly Great fat WHFB 4th Edition box caught my eye and, after scrapping cash together (including loans from friends), it was mine and I was hooked ...

I grew up a big fan of fantasy novels, D&D, etc. and I used to paint all sorts of fantasy models as a kid. Then in 96 I discovered Warhammer and really liked the High Elf archer models. Luckily for me the box set at the time came with High Elves, so I saved my money, bought that and went on from there.

I liked the crazy 8th edition rules, good stuff for casual play (terrible for tournaments, and they come out and say so).

Plus fantasy tends to have the more mature players and armies tend to be at least fully assembled, and occasionally even painted!

I would say D&D and fantasy novels started my down this path, but a friend of mine convinced to try a game of warhammer. It didn't go too well. (too long and didn't know the rules very well) We didn't give up though and played warhammer quest for a while. We then moved into necromunda and that got me hooked. After a break, I got back into GW, but they really didn't support their smaller games, so I went with my favorite genre, fantasy.

I started off with 40k too similar to many other people and i started fantasy simply because my friends all had fantasy and i wanted to play with them with my own fantasy army but one thing i do miss is the choice of armies in the 40k range as in my opinion they seem more appealing.

I walked into a GW store and after months of drooling over the figures on the website went and signed up for the Academy they offered at the time and picked up a Battle For Skull Pass set. To this day almost every fantasy army appeals to me on the 40k end it's just one Orks.

Thus, After having thus successively taken each member of the community in its powerful grasp and fashioned him at will, the supreme power then extends its arm over the whole community. Deadly Dark Eldar Warrior

Ive always been into fantasy and sci fi stuff since I was a kid watching Star Wars and reading Deltora Quest books. I could never get into the Lord of the Rings novels which i find a little long winded although I read all of them but I thoroughly enjoyed the movies which were shorter, to the point and told a great story. Lord of the Rings really intensified my love of all things fantasy and when I read that they were selling LOTR miniatures at the Newsagency each month I jumped at the chance to collect my own goblins and elves and such. Little did I realise there was more to this.

At another newsagency i found White Dwarf and I learnt with each copy more and more about WHFB and WH40K, its hard to imagine I used to have trouble reading the battle reports because I didnt know what was what, I couldnt tell a Tomb Spyder from a Pariah
So I started reading WD and it was my only window into GW for years until I read a store opened up near our house so I went down to check it out. And then it started............

I first got into 40k and bought the Tau battleforce and rulebook, had fun with that then moved onto DarK Eldar and Eldar.
Then much later on I got into fantasy with Night Goblins although my favourite army was Ogre Kingdoms.

I dont play anything any more though because the hobby is way too expensive for me, I love every army at one stage or another and constantly go through phases over which is the one I would most like to play with, that and I find the game system extremely boring but I still buy the codexes and army books. I love the background above everything else.

What got me into Fantasy? A radical drug rehabilitation program. The idea was to substitute my craving for heroin for something more wholesome. It worked, but now I'm completely broke, which is pushing me back towards heroin just to forget my troubles.

Aye, Plasticrack is alot more wholesome, just as addicting, still perfectly legal, won't eat up most of your income, and there is no known overdose level.

Started with 40K, with no interest in Fantasy. Then Warhammer Siege (for I don't know what edition, but it was 1st edition 40K) came out. It was a split 40K/Fantasy book. There was a Fantasy scenario with a doomed Dwarf outpost, which I thought was really cool. It took a while after that before I made the leap, but that was the seed that germinated into a full on Warhammer Fantasy addiction.

“It was in lands of the Chi-An where she finally ran him to ground. There she kissed him deeply as he lay dying, and so stole from him his last, agonized breath.

On a delicate chain at her throat, she keeps it with her to this day.”

My friend showed me the old GW site trying to get me into LOTR, but I saw the WHFB models, and I knew I had to play it. Ended up with Skull Pass, a paint kit, and some minis.

This was like, 4-5 years ago.

Some people play to win, some people play for fun. Me? I play to kill toy soldiers.

Very nice stories so far!

I had been in the presence of GW stuff before and always found it very cool, but never had the money. Of course my cousins had showed me when I was 12 (12 years ago) but I just couldnt get into it because of costs. I grew to a D&D DM/Player the previous year and had always loved Fantasy and Sci Fi.

So for me it started about Fall of '09. I had played the Dawn of War games a lot and was seeking something new to do as games were getting stale. I popped into my FLGS and start looking at the Warhammer 40k things instead of Magic/D&D. I did an impulse buy and snagged Assault on Black Reach. Fast forward to about a month ago.One of the guys in my 40k Group asks if I'm interested in Fantasy. Which I was. So I bought the Army Book, ordered some guys, and now I'm planning on a Battallion in a week or two.

Not that epic I guess, but thats mah story.

Passed by the a local gaming store all the way back in 1998, saw the 5th ed WHFB box displayed (brets and lizardmen), and after discussion there was no turning back. Since then I sold off the brets, and collected and built a much larger empire army. Played competitively locally since 1999.

After reading a lot of white dwarfs I then decided to start collecting the Imperial Guard in the year 2000, and today this is my largest collection to date among my 5 40k and 3 WHFB armies.

Why? Because in my younger days I was a modeller of planes and tanks. Later on I started playing Avalon Hill boardgames like Squad Leader, Main Battle tank etc., as well as D&D, then later Magic the Gathering and Mechwarrior. Thus the GW games were the perfect blend between modelling and gaming, and has been my passion for the past 13 years now.

A general love of all things sword and sorcery. Heroquest was my juming off point. I think GW would do well to bring something like this back. It's a great entry point to the game.

Erm probably the damage was done as a child by watching willow and dragonslayer way too many times, then it was fighting fantasy novels as a littleun. Had a few gw models prior to going to uni (some skellies and dwarfs) but it was at uni i got dragged down to my gaming club, and got hooked!

Spent way too much of my loan on my undead army (back when they were all one) and over the years just collected more and more. Have a few 40k armies, but haven't played in years, have tried a few other systems but always found finding opponents really difficult.

I was staying at a friend of a friends house for a week or so over summer and found a giant stash of WDs. after the spending the whole time i was there inside, and reading through the WDs my parents realised how much i was into it they bought me a SM and a Bret army (from someone else).
So, old style Wds (before the advert madness)
