My friends at school played WHFB. I got interested in the game and started collecting and army. Eventually I got into 40k through WHFB but I am still playing both.

Of course it makes sense. When there are a bunch of BDSM clowns doing Olympic gymnast routines throughout your unit, while also cutting off heads, you tend to get a bit distracted.

Played 40K about five years ago, got back into it again with the recent release of the Grey Knights.
However, at my local store, the 40K players are rather WAAC which I do not enjoy. However, I noticed the fantasy players just tended to have a laugh while playing. So, I started looking at the models, fell in love with a lot of them, checked through the army books...
And found delight in the sheer amount of misfortune that is possible to inflict upon yourself with Skaven.
Couple of IoB boxsets, an army book and a doomwheel later, and I'm in love with Skaven and Fantasy.

I started just building/painting models, which is something I've been doing for the past 6 or so years, and getting into the fluff of both game systems. In January, though, I had an overwhelming desire to finally get an army together and start playing, and since GW games are king in my area, I looked at all the armies in Fantasy and 40k, and Skaven seemed like the most fun, so that's how I went.
I most definitely made the right decision.

Well when I first saw the stuff, I was instantly interested. Unfortunately the price was too steep. Also, I liked the 40k setting better, because it had tanks and guns!
Now... oh maybe..8 years later, I got back into the hobby, and there was a guy at the game store pushing us to start playing it. I opened the starter set and started putting it together the store had something to play test with, and read some of the rule book, and now I am about to drop tons of money on an army, just gotta pick what one first.

I remember it well. I started out playing 40k as Necrons and was hooked to the game. I discovered there was a Fantasy variant in White Dwarf, the first battle report I ever read being between Daemons and Lizardmen. I did some investigating into fantasy, but dropped it because no one at my hobby store played it. Then when a painter came in and begun painting a High Elf Dragon, a lot of people begun collecting. I was going to start Vampire Counts, but too many people played them, and so I had to choose between Brets and Empire, started Empire and now Fantasy is my prefered game, 40k being my second (at least until Crons are rereleased ). I loved the idea of challenges, thats the main reason I play, those freakin epic challenges between my Templar Grand Master and my nemesis Chaos Lord (average of 6 rounds of combat per challenge, Booyah)

I was twelve at the time, and was pretty good at D&D (fantasy's always held a special place in my heart) when I decided that I wanted to use terrain and so forth. So, after looking around I had settled on a game called "Uncharted Seas", and when I walked into my local hobby shop to see if they had anything for it, I stopped. There, on the shelf, was "Battle For Skull Pass" nearly passing out at the sight of such sheer awesome/Dwarf-ness, I forced my Mom over to it (her, nearly passing out from the price) and forced her to buy everything needed to get started that very night. (she made me promise to play it every night though, and now she regrets it, ) And so started my obsession with Warhammer...

Spawn of Chaos

I got into Fantasy first. Way back when I was a young kid I played a couple new computer games Warhammer: Dark Omen and Warhammer: Shadow of the Horned Rat. These games were just awesome to me, controlling armies, running down enemy formations with my cavalary, good voice acting. Maybe they aren't the best games now a days, but they were good for their time. It wasn't till a couple years later that I actually saw a game's workshop store. I had no idea that game was based off a table-top game. Since then I've always wanted to start a Dog's of War army led by Commander Barnhart and Lt. Schepke. Oh, and because of that game, I've always grossly overestimated the strength of rat ogres, because in those computer games, a single rat ogre would tear your army up.
I actually got into 40k because I played Warriors of Chaos in Fantasy with a heavy reliance on demons. (back when you could take the different demons with your mortal army.) So one day I realized I had enough demon models to actually play a game of 40k. (again, back when you could take the different demons in the chaos space marine codex, the last army book I think) I'd start off with nothing but a Demon Prince on the table and have to summon the rest of my army. The friend I played against most often used Brettonians in Fantasy and Tau in 40k. I used the same Demon Prince as my general for both fantasy and 40k. Every time I played against my friend's Brettonian's, his trebuchet would always kill my Demon Prince in every game, but when I played his Tau, his railguns always failed to wound or bounced off the demon's ward save. So my Demon Prince could weather the most advanced weaponry the future had to throw at him, but rocks always spelled his doom.

I've been an off-and-on GW gamer for most of my adult life, but most recently I got back into Fantasy Battle pretty much by accident.
A friend of mine commissioned me to paint 5000 points of Skaven and 5000 points of High Elves. Yes, you read that right, 10,000 points, about 650 models altogether. This project took a little over 2 months and paid very well, so it was time well spent.
Anyway, once it was done, my patron invited me to play a game with the painted armies. Being a generally agreeable sort, I obliged him. I was not prepared for just how much fun I had. I was, quite literally, taken aback by just how enjoyable 8th edition Fantasy Battle can be.
Auspiciously, my FLGS had one of its incredibly rare sales shortly thereafter, so I dropped half a grand on 5000 points of (Savage) Orcs & (Night) Goblins.
Yeah, I went big.
I'm hosting a build & base party tonight to get my army assembled and prepped for painting. The ladz are coming over and there will be beer & pretzels aplenty.

For me,it was the 2 PS1 games that feature the Grudgebringer mercenary army ( shadow of the horned rat and dark omen ).My long term plan is to build a table top version and its going ok so far.
