Because most MMO's look pathetic next to WOW.

It's not just WoW. MMO's in general are very hit/miss. They either succeed or they fall flat on their face, and the laws of statistics would suggest the most likely outcome for any MMO is going to be failure (Especially in the world of Pay2Play). EDIT: Failure of course being relative. Most MMO's make money back for the publisher/developer and stay up for at least a year. Only a few MMO's see the years long success like WoW or Everquest have had.

What will determine DM's success will likely be how well it can pull in and keep the 40k fanbase playing and paying. It's really a lot harder to do that it may seem. I would surmise that like most MMO's it will be strong enough during the first few months and the free play period. But after that time, it all comes down to how good the game really is.

We shall see *brushes mustache*

I don't think your wrong to doubt the viability of DM. I'm unsure just how much they can do with an MMORPG in the way they seem to be making it. A Battlefield like FPS is something I think would work much better with what they seem to be doing (and I still wonder why the only 40k FPS ever made is about a Fire Warrior...).

Of course there are still many unknowns.

Are you serious? You're going off of "Most mmo's flop so this one will too"?

World of Warcraft I couldn't care less about. Not everyone who likes MMO's plays WoW.

It is ignorance to say it will flop when you know next to nothing about the game, and just saying "Its an mmo so it will probably flop."

MMO's are an incredibly diverse bunch of games, and you can't compare every single one of them to WoW.

Indeed, I don't give a gak for bland festivals of cartoonish mediocrities like world of walking.

Personally, I'm looking forward to this game and to Guild Wars 2.

I didn't say anything about WoW, you're the one who brought it up.

I'm simply stating that the majority of the MMO demographic today is unlikely to drop everything for a smaller known franchise which, unless it somehow revolutionizes the genre, has not as much to offer as big name titles that it will be competing with at the time. Swtor, GW2, and other MMO's are going to be released at around the same time, and therefore are not only going to receive more attention than DM, but are going to be instantly portrayed and hyped in a better light.

Why? Studios, for one. Veterans Bioware and NCSoft are very well known compared to Vigil, who has only released one, moderately well-reviewed game as a team to date. To think that they would be given the same confidence as a big name company like the ones listed above is absurd. It doesn't help, either, than Vigil is a novice in the genre. So far there is nothing big that sets it apart from every other MMO out there. You may point to vehicle combat, but I point to WAR's RvR system. It was a system that was popularized and flourished in DAoC, but subsequently was implemented poorly in WAR. To be fair though, it is too early to tell, and as I said I am keeping my fingers crossed. However, as a result, the majority of players will flock to these big name MMO's rather than DM, and the patching, updating, and general effort put into DM after launch will be reduced from what it could be if its revenue was higher.

And if you still don't think I'm making sense, let's use common sense. CO, WAR, DCUO, Aion, Rift, Darkfall, STO, AoC, Lotro. Were these bad games? Not necessarily. Some were better than others, and I for one have played most all of them and enjoyed them. But they didn't they make a huge splash, receive raving reviews or become the subject of positive remarks over the web that they claimed they would. In that case it's a flop. If a game claims that it can hold your interest long enough to warrant a substantial monthly investment, it should offer more entertainment than a normal $50 game.

Now don't mistake my cynicism for trolling. I would love just as much as you to see DM be a kick-ass balls-off-the-wall awesome MMO. But I can't put my faith in a game that history has shown may not live up to half its promises.

I understand your point of view a bit more now, thanks.

I think that an obvious thing to really set DMO apart from the MMO's you listed, most notably, is the time period and Sci-Fi.

Machine guns, Vehicles, Space, will set it apart. When you are that different from a game like WoW, its very hard to compare them in a fair way.

Fingers crossed as well. They certainly have been starving those who want the information. E3 2011 is supposed to be the big reveal, but that is what they said E3 2010. I remember it very clearly, and we don't know much more now than we did back then.

Which is fairly ironic, considering it's scheduled to hit around the same time as SW:TOR.

And SW:ToR is from a very well loved developer, in the same genre, and a spiritual successor to a well liked series that some people still wish they'd have made a third game for.

I hope it will blossom into a game that can rival the other top dogs in the mmo realm.
However I must say the odds of the game succeeding are pretty slim.
GW would have to market the hell out of the game to get people to want buy it.
The total # of fans for 40k overall is pretty slim.
GW needs to pull in a larger crowd to maintain their universe.

This is actually the trailer they showed last year.

Not to worry any folks, but Vigil haven't updated their site or said anything in ages, and now THQ have gone oddly quiet regarding DMO as well.

Hopefully they'll hit us all with a big reveal at E3, but this does seem a very dry period for news on the game. Not had anything new since December time last year.

If nothing it might be a sign, that they learned from WaR not to be totally open through-out development and then fail to keep things you'd mentioned ages back in the game.

Everyone is just waiting for new info at the mo mind.

One of the biggest bummers to me is that most likely, nine out of ten classes will be Space Marines.

Not to say I hate Marines, I just really hope that Xenos get quite a bit of love in this game. I'm sure people will enjoy playing various-colored Marines and all, but I think most of us would prefer variation and a nice selection. I for one hope that Dark Eldar will be playable. Tyranids would be really sweet too, but I can honestly say that I don't see it being likely, so I'll settle for them being enemies in the game.

I'll likely give it a shot, as long as they have a free trial, but I hated WAR, I thought it was complete garbage, so I hope this one is much better.

Kingdom Death Fanatic. Dark Eldar: Kabal of the Fragile Breath. Dark Elves: Allegiance to the Black Crown. Also, Masons, Cygnar, and Legion of Everblight. All unnamed.

Imperial faction consisting of Space Marines (tanks, various builds for melee/ranged), Guard officer (with subordinate guardsmen as "pets", to use the crude MMO term), Techpriest (various technology and mechadendrites), Psyker (psyker that risks damage or debuff to him/herself for extra power), Sororitas (short-ranged offensive, with battle prayers as group buffs).

Ork faction with Slugga Boy (melee, can become painboyz/nobs), Shoota Boy (Ranged, can become lootaboyz/flash gits), Mekboy (lots of tools and weird tech), Painboy (Buffer, regen-based reather than direct healing), Weirdboy (psyker that builds up power over time)

Eldar faction with Striking Scorpion (tank melee), Dark Avenger (ranged damage), Howling Banshee (debuff / offensive melee) Farseer (defensive oriented psyker), Warlock (offensive oriented psyker)

Etc.

As an MMO I can't really say I'm at all interested, I wish this game was going to be more of a battlefront type game.

Sihamoni takes great pride in the league he helped create, as was conveyed in his recent advertising campaign for the CMFL that stated his midgets will "... take on anything; man, beast, or machine."

That's actually pretty much how they've been talking about it working for the Imperium. Just cosmetic options for Astartes to have different Chapters, and rather than Sororitas/Psykers we'd see Inquisitors.
