Hello everyone, hope this topic is in the right place. I have just got back into 40k and noticed there is a new Chaos Space Marines codex out(by new I mean since I stopped!). I was just wondering has there been many changes since the last edition to merit buying the new one? I intend to buy it sometime in the future, was just wondering as the nearest GW to me is a ways away. Thanks!

This. This can only end badly.

There are some who walk until their legs fail them and they fall to the ground. I find that respectable.
Then there are those who drag themselves further. I find that admirable.

If you play emperors children, and have a full noise marine army with cult dreadnoughts and terminators - dont buy it. Just dont.

Generally - cult armies, as a whole, are gone. The best you can do, outside of cult legion troops, is given them an appropriate Icon of the chaos gods, whcih gives them some benefits. But no cult weaponry, etc.

There are some good builds, and it can still be fun to play. But overall its not a great codex. Its also only a 4th edition codex, as the previous one was 3rd ed, second revision.

@purplefood is that how you get the nurgle edition

I won't be using the Emp's Childers so thats not a problem. I think I'm gona try Iron Warriors, maybe not them but an army based on ranged combat more than melee.

Indeed it is...
More or less the only version worth getting apart from the Khornate one and that way is just messy...
I like you sig, it is shiny with hilarity...

Why thank you sir, I think yours is better by far though. The suicide mission part is my fav!

I was actually thinking of starting nurgle but its too icky for my liking, and I do love my bling, nurgle doesn't allow for much bling!

You could always do a tarnished metal rather than infected organics...
Paint them a ancient/tarnished metal e.g. copper or gold but the rusted version.
It would also give you some nice vehicles...
You could call them "The Brotherhood of Corrupted Steel" or something like that...

I like the sound of that actually, I might try something like that. With some rust and damage on the models. I have a lovely picture of a rusted dreadnought in my mind now!

Do yourself a favor.
Don't read it.
Don't buy it.

It will only depress you. Start a different army, wait for 6th edition, anything.

It doesn't have to be, "Icky." Devlan Mud, Flesh Wash, Black Ink, and Ork Flesh Wash (new name I know) over a normal paint job works miracles. Put in along creases, don't worry about being perfect. Devlan over silver or boltgun makes wonderful rusty metal. That is if Devaln is the one that used to be chestnut wash that is...

Or to specify what everyone's been dancing around. The codex got made during a brief time when the studio was working on "streamlining" the books. For example:

All daemons have been reduced to two units, Lesser Daemons and a Greater Daemon

No more purchasable vet skills

Armory and Gifts of Chaos are gone

Legion specific units like IW basilisks and cultists are gone

No more alterations to the FOC or who can take what unit

The focus is on a weird mix of Black Legion and Chaos Renegades. The book is playable, but I've seen more than a few people describe it as soulless.

Poor codex - mine is in French. I like the language.

The designers should have a look into the 3rd ed CSM codex, one of the best codices ever!

Best of luck. I sold my 3000 point fully painted Word Bearers army as soon as I saw a copy of the latest Chaos Codex. It absolutely ruined one of the most fun armies I've ever played.

No earth shattering, thought provoking quote. I'm just someone who was introduced to 40K in the late 80's and it's become a lifelong hobby.

Yeah, it's lost some of its flavour to say the least. For Iron Warriors you may be better off using the (normal) Space Marines Codex?
Maybe even a certain fandex?

Whilst it did loose A LOT of its flavour and character, the book can still be used in competitive and semi-competitive environments however.

Yet every thread i see about how to make CSM competitive always ends with people taking lash on a Daemon Prince and Obiliterators followed by Khorne Bezerkers and Plague Marines

Not one thread has ever disccussed how to use anything outside them or if they do its mixing the Obliterators with Terminators
Its just really depressing, noone even talks about using anything else
You can't blame them either, they are just no brainer choices over everything else, because near everything in the book sucks

That's not entirely true and there are a lot of other solid choices that can be used out-side of those, lash/plagues/oblit's are simply the most forgiving build. A skilled player can use many more choices than that; Mannahnin did very well in Adepticon (3-5th I think?) using an unconventional build.

Chaos Space Marines, Sorcerers, Greater Daemons, Termies, Chosen, Havocs, Lesser Daemons, Vindicators, Defilers, Predators and more can all be used in a competitive or semi-competitive environment with success, just the Lash/Plague/Oblit build is the most forgiving, doesn't mean they're the only good units.

Ohh don't get me wrong, I agree
Was commenting on the fact that noone even entertains those notions, because of the sheer power that build brings

I bought a thousand son army, when the old rules were out, got side tracked. Then built it in just enough time to see the new rules come out. (face palm!") I didn't stick to the usual color scheme and like the army appearance wise, but I'll be waiting for the next codex to use it.

OK, I'm going to ask the Newb question, because a) I've never found the answer, and b) this seems the opportune moment:

Are you allowed to use elements from an older codex that haven't been explicitly changed in the newer codex? I get the feeling this is going to have shades of correct since things seem to vary based on the level you're playing at.

All I have to say on the matter of the current 'Chaos' Codex is this.

NB: It's a little out of date as far as the meta-game is concerned (I did write it before 5th Ed came out), but the sentiment remains the same.

I do like one feature of the new codex (Bereserkers as TROOPS!!!!)
But it did lose alot of feel for each faction you were playing and have generic daemons and lose daemonic gifts and became a bit bland
ie No world Eaters termies or iron warrioprs basalisks
