Hi all. Now I know that there are a few posts on here regarding GW's New price increase But I was just wondering if anybody feels like they are being pushed out of the hobby?
Now my friend text me today and said after Gamesday this year he will more than likely be quiting due to the price increase and this greatly saddened me. I love my hobby I really do but unfortunatly with the increase it's becomming near on unafordable, and im also beginning to think do the models warrent the money I spend.
Now I know there are websites out there that do the products cheaper and yes this will probably be the avenue I take but I enjoy going into my local store, chatting to the staff who I have built up a repour with and come out with a brand spanking new model.
Really the purpose of this post is to see if anybody feels the same as I do and have a good old rant!
cheers

I only buy about one army a year, and at the deepest discount that I can find.

As such, I don't get particularly wound up about the price increases. I suppose if I really bought a lot of models I'd be more upset, but I don't so I'm not.

Just throwing that out there.

I'm afraid GW prices have become too high for me. Which is a real shame, I was contemplating branching out into 40K with the Dark Eldar. Now... well, unless I somehow manage to significantly increase my income, it's out of my price range.

Looks like Mantic will be getting my 'new army' money instead.

It sucks big time. I started a Dark eldar army before christmas andwas stoked about the new models and also ahd big plans for my chaos army but i guess that is more than likely gone down the pan.

There's a difference between being 'forced out' and 'not buying.

Now, I won't be the first guy to defend GW's business practice. Hell, I won't even be the millionth. I will, however, encourage you to keep playing if you really enjoy the game. Grab a few more Dark Eldar models from Wayland or Maelstrom so you can get a discount. If you want to start a new army, look into buying only non-GW models. If you local FLGS is a GW store, look into building your own table and some terrain. If your friends do decide that they no longer wish to play 40k, look into playing Epic. Free rules, and you can find great deals on Ebay.

I love 40k. It's a great game with an even better universe behind it. But GW won't be getting my money, at least until they stop the embargo on Australians and New Zealanders, as well as the other players in in different countries that GW have blatantly offended.

I always thought of myself as having plenty of disposable income, and I'm always happy to pay extra for quality and good service. But even I feel like I'm getting taken for a ride at Games Workshop.

It isn't just that I find their prices high... I think I actually find them insulting. Their prices have reached a point now where even if they had a big sign over the shop saying "We just want to see how much you idiots will pay for this crap" in big bold letters. Their intentions still wouldn't be any clearer than they already are now.

If I feel that way I can't imagine how parents and teenagers must feel. You don't have to stand in a Games Workshop for very long before you'll hear a parent exclaim "No Harry it's too expensive, maybe for Christmas" or the like. How is that helping the hobby grow?

I personally won't be buying any more from Games Workshop, I'm gonna try and get into war machine, or buy second hand stuff. Even though I could buy from GW, I just don't feel it is worth it, I haven't for years. I think everyone should do the same, then maybe they will finally get the message.

Forced out? No. I simply decided that it wasn't worth it to purchase any more models with the newest round of price increases as well as executive decisions that feel insulting to me. I'll still be playing as not using the models I already own only punishes me (and not GW); I simply won't devote any new time or money to them and am selling/trading off the bits that I'll now never want to get to (or are left over from previously owned armies). If I were a new player instead of an old fogey with 15,000pt painted over several armies, I might feel pushed out but that's not my situation.

Well perhaps I started late into the hobby, or maybe I don't care that much. but I don't think the price has actually gone up? I can't see it tbh.

It's a game I enjoy and I will still play it until it literally becomes unfeasable, I'm quite lucky in that I'm happy with my one army and I alreayd have my 1500 point list, and if I want anymore then I set a little money aside and get what I want. It's not hard guys?

I chose to stop with GW. I'm going to order the models required to finish my last 2 armies from wayland games and that will be it.

I don't feel forced out, i'm just moving on. There are other games out there that I enjoy just as much. I'm happy to stick to those.

Take a deep breath, breathe.

Make sure you are sitting down.

Ready?....

GW is not 'the hobby'.

Whooooaa.

There is a wider richer and more varied experience available to you if you are able to see past GW's hold on you.

From companies and individuals who provide rules and minis to those who produce either/or. There are also many gaming clubs around, whatever your taste.

They all want to make your experience a good one.

Relax, put your codexes down for a while, you don't have to abandon them completely, and take a look around you.

I'll be the first to tell you to branch out. You don't need to pay current prices to get some good deals. GW has MORE games OOP then they do current games. THAT should in itself be enough for you to go back and look for something you like.

Second? There are other compnaies that are going to be picking up the slack after this last couple of days BS. Some of them out there even have free rules, and... dare I say it... CHEAPER minis in price, and better in quality. Loads of expensive gak are not, and have never been a big deal, nor should they be.

All they have done is the same thing Mongoose did and cut thier own throats. They will learn the hard way that they fethed up. Then they will be back begging for you to come back.

Hope you have moved on though, and keep the old games around based on how they used to be, and the fun they really can be.

I don't know. I can see how a price increase would force out newcomers to the hobby. But those that have been in for a while (and thus have decent armies already built or purchased) could probably continue indefinitely without buying more models.

If the hobby for you is building and painting GW miniatures, well, I can see how this could be a hobby-ender for you, too.

Although as many have pointed out, you don't have to buy from GW. You can get GW models from lots of online places like eBay, online retailers, and even DakkaDakka.

Right?

BTW, this is how I have managed to stay in the hobby. I almost never buy new at the local gamestore. $22 for a blister is just too rich for my blood. And yet I have a huge collection of minis acquired by trade. True, I can't always get the latest and greatest RIGHT NOW, but hey, the world of 40K is HUGE and I am more than pleased to explore whatever door is opened to me by fate.

I found that GW became too expensive a long time ago and whole armies were out of reach. So I stuck to buying second hand stuff and skirmish games. I'm more and more attracted towards skirmish games using things like Reaper's Chronoscope figures or RPG gaming in D&D or Cthulu where I can paint a range of different characters and monsters and there are no essential buys, it's all just those things I like the look of.

I have to agree with what has been mentioned a couple of times; this only stinks for people either new to GW games, or people branching out to new armies. The last week or two I have been buying everything I can that I intended to buy in order to get it cheaper. On top of that, I bought all of it off Amazon. I just started this year; I'm not going anywhere just yet.

I'm not leaving, but I am consolidating, getting rid of anything I don't need or will use.

In the future if I am starting a new army (I'm almost exclusively a WHFB player) I'll be getting mantic models first line for the majority of the army and filling holes with GW models.
In March a player at a 2500pt tourney had a mantic dwarf army, bought for less than $200US with over 140 models.
GW has no hope of competing against that, UK price variance discount for australians or not...

My concern is the reduction in the number of new players due to the increases coupled with the long time players who are leaving..

I actually felt forced out back at the start of 4ed. I suppose I have a significantly lower income than most wargamers but GW had some subtle price increases back then and hit me with both my new codexes back to back and I just could not afford to update even one army, much less both at once. I never actually intended to quit 40k but I got into warmachine as something I could play while funding my army updates and by the time I had enough money, whispers of 5th edition were being heard and it became obvious my play group no longer had the time for those long 40k games and I would never play again. Nor would I really miss it.
My only real regret is I never got to play apocalypse with my scratchbuilt trygon(this was at least 2 years before the current plastic kit).
One odd thing I encountered was that a well-built and painted gw model is one heck of an investment. I think the retail value of some of the stuff i bought back then is worth 150% after only 5 years or so. It's better than the freaking stock market if your willing to accept other models as trade! I got half of my cygnar army and almost all of my retribution on bartertown though.

Remember... GamesWorkshop IS NOT A HOBBY!!! They are just a model company selling models.

The hobby is table top wargaming.

If you are getting pushed out of GW's line of models for war gaming, then just jump to another company's war game, like Corvus Belli or Privateer Press.

On an Express Elevator to Hell!!

I'm in a similar boat to yourself OP.

I've just ordered the Infinity rulebook (yes I know you can download the rules for free, but I'm a sucker for books!), as well as a small range of figs just to have a go at painting some of the range. This is a U-turn on what I had been planning to do up until a few weeks ago in the form of a new GW O&G army.

So why? For a start, the prices. GW's new 'trade embargo' means that I can no longer order from Maelstrom/Wayland and the like. I need to travel 5 hours now to get to the one shop in the country, or pay substantially over the RRP for mail order from GW. I suppose I could have gone for one last emergency bulk order from the aforementioned, but to be honest my heart just wasn't in it. Infinity on the other hand I can still order from those UK retailers.

Secondly, the scale involved in getting a new army started. I'm getting married at the end of the year, and I'm trying to get my own small business off the ground. I look at the 40-block units of orcs and just know that it will be practically impossible for me to ever get the time to finish it. I love WFB, I love the model ranges, but there is no way realistically that I will ever see the completed horde of orcs on the tabletop. Infinity caters for the skirmish game, the model range is beautiful, and it seems ideally suited to casual games. A couple of friends back home have got into it, so games won't be a problem in the future.

So, a combination of prices getting too high, feeling like I am stood at the base of Mt. Everest in terms of starting a new GW project, and lack of availability - I can no longer easily purchase GW products. In a way it might be a good thing - although I will continue with my slow-burning Space Marine/Pre-Heresy project, GW's recent policies have nudged me down a new path. I'm going to experience a new game (which, from what people have told me is great fun), and will be painting and modelling something new.

For the last few years, I've generally only bought one unit model from GW a year. With two armies at over 10,000pts, and the other two approaching 5,000pts, there's not a lot I MUST have.

I'm not getting pushed out of my hobby by GW - they are being excluded from future purchases by me. Instead, I'll focus MY hobby on my other games stuff.

Bites for the new guys, though. I'll just tell them what I usually do. "buy a 2nd hand army, strip and repaint if necessary and go from there."

I agree with this. GW got me into the hobby, but I will be DAMNED before i let those fascists push me out of the hobby. I am done with buying more GW, what I have from them is enough. The last thing I will buy from non GW retailers though is the upcoming necron releases, and thats that.

I'm moving along to war machine. Which is funny, because in one year of spending conservatively on WM I will have a massive army, where as conservative spending with GW for three years won't see me do the same...

Yup I deffo feel as if GW are "pushing" me out their door saying "go spend your money elsewhere".

The worst thing is that I only joined the hobby to build and paint stuff but after that got boring, a year long break got me back into the hibby but for also the gaming aspect.

The most fun part (for me) seems to be building up lists, i dont know why but I can think up a list then decide how to change it. While 70% of the time they wouldnt win any games its fun using them. Since i cant use my crazy lists since i cant afford the models then the hobby has pretty much died for me.... which is a shame.

Wonder if Wordl of Warcraft is still addicting, i need somethin to be addicted to.

I think I am one of the few people that does not have an issue with games workshops prices. I would much rather the prices increase and they stay in buisiness then them going under and me losing my favorite past time.

I play AT LEAST 2-3 games a week at 2-3 hours per game, not to mention a tourney usually once a month for 3-5 more games at 2-3 hours each.

Considering an average army for me costs around 500 dollars, lets do some math. lets say 14 games over the course of a month at 2.5 hours each, with a 500 dollar army thats 14.50$ an hour for entertainment. OK thats a little up there in the price department. however once you get to month two, its 7.25 per hour, thats about the cost of a movie with popcorn and a drink. Once you get into your third month of the hobby its at less than 5 dollars an hour and continues to decrease with every game you play.

Considering the prices of some other things these days, like going to the movies or what not, I really dont mind paying a big fee once and then getting to play as much as I can find time/opponents for.

In the grand scheme of things, Warhammer is one of the cheaper things you can do. I also play golf, thats WAY more expensive then warhammer will ever be.

Forced out? No. I could get the models if I choose to. Pushed out would be a better term given GW's behavior. PP's sale is the icing on the cake.

Hope more old fools come to their senses and start giving you their money instead of those Union Jack Blood suckers...
