I play AT LEAST 2-3 games a week at 2-3 hours per game, not to mention a tourney usually once a month for 3-5 more games at 2-3 hours each.

Considering an average army for me costs around 500 dollars, lets do some math. lets say 14 games over the course of a month at 2.5 hours each, with a 500 dollar army thats 14.50$ an hour for entertainment. OK thats a little up there in the price department. however once you get to month two, its 7.25 per hour, thats about the cost of a movie with popcorn and a drink. Once you get into your third month of the hobby its at less than 5 dollars an hour and continues to decrease with every game you play.

Considering the prices of some other things these days, like going to the movies or what not, I really dont mind paying a big fee once and then getting to play as much as I can find time/opponents for.

In the grand scheme of things, Warhammer is one of the cheaper things you can do. I also play golf, thats WAY more expensive then warhammer will ever be.

Huh?? Never thought of it that way before. Im guessing if you really want to be pernickety then you can include the hours you spend building and painting said army.

Most of my previous posts were made while still initially enraged and sleep deprived, but since iv had time to calm down and think it doesnt look as bad as initially thought. Maybe the price increase will make me buy less stuff so i can actually paint stuff haha.

I don't feel "forced out" of the "GW Hobby". If I was one of those people that buys whole armies at once then maybe I would, but as it stands, I don't .

After the initial costs(non-GW hobby tools, glues, and primer GW paints)and a couple of boxes, ONE Codex and the rule book...that's it until I get through all of my conversions, assembly, and painting on what I have before I buy any more.

As a point of fact, I can easily spend one month on the contents of a single box of GW product, and I just don't have any urgency in getting my ONE army done in a small time frame. I don't do tournaments or competitions.

The way that I make purchases combined with my painting and modeling habits keeps costs more manageable. Yes their product is expensive, but if you don't fork over hundreds of dollars, pounds, or other currency all at once it's not that bad.

Just my two cents.

My biggest problem I have with the price rise is, unless tournaments (my probably only real chance to play for the time being) start allowing off brand models, I am kinda stuck.

Eitherway I am buying less often than I have been, doubt I will stop atleast until I get my current projects completed.

The sink.

I chose to stop buying GW and am currently liquidating my remaining GW figs (except for Demons). I'd love to start Dark Eldar, but at these prices it ain't happening.

I actually considering selling off my Warmachine and Flames of War as well. I don't get to play much right now, and those games are quite expensive, too.

Makes me sad to think about it, really.

Like many here, I'm not sure if I was forced out, but GW did make it really easy for me to walk away.

A few years back the price raises got me to stop buying almost any new GW product. A year and a half ago I had finally acquired what I needed (mostly used) to finish my armies and I haven't bought any GW since. Other games and mini lines have taken over my wargaming funds. I'm spending less and getting more and loving it.

Can't say this will be permanent. If my gaming group fell apart or I moved and couldn't find like-minded gamers, I'd probably play 40k more, but you can bet I wouldn't be buying much new product. The cost of starting a new army makes me really glad that I've got two large armies finished and enough unpained for those armies to last a very long time.

Forced out, no, but if I were starting wargming today, I might well feel like the door of GW was barred shut.

I really haven't been buying a lot of models in the last few years. For the most part, I have been painting like a madman doing my little bit of commission work and working my way through my backlog of models that I have. For example, if I painted 1 space marine a day, every day, it would take me almost a year to get through them alone. Add in the Chaos variety, the puppies, the vampires and the other versions and lets just say that I have a LOT of stuff to get through, and that's only one of my giant armies. I did some initial outlay on Blood ANgels when they came out, a few characters, one box of DC, one of Sang Guard and the codex, and that is it for that investment.

I think I am going to make a vow to myself regarding the current raises in price, I will buy rulebooks and codeci, but, I will only buy models with the proceeds of what I make painting. I am tempted to get into the new Dark Eldar (I couldn't stand the older look) and pick up some of the new GK to go with my old GK stuff that I never got around to painting more than a few minis, and then I will have at least some of ALL armies that have been released for 40k, at least in bits form, (I used a few boxes of BT upgrade packs to trick out other marines)

Prices have been raised about every year over the last 15 years I played GW. No surprise. Its a good game system with excellent models.

I been through plenty of "other scifi tabletop" including complete warzone armies and kryomech and others. They all go under and its frustrating.

I felt like I was being shoved out the moment I stepped in 4 months ago...

Sadly I really do like the game and models... Am I likely to boycott GW or the like over price rises? No, I'll just buy from elsewhere, sure GW is still making money but at least my wallet isn't swearing at me as loudly...I mean I am overgrown kid and I do love my toys.

Wargaming was around before GW and it will be around long after GW. I find all this talk of stopping the hobby because of GW’s pricing policies disturbing. GW is not the hobby, the Hobby is Wargaming and it’s your hobby.

This price rise is an excellent opportunity to expand your hobby outside of the GW straight jacket and into the wider world of Wargaming. There you will find the freedom to choose rules that you enjoy, not be forced to buy from a particular manufacturer and buy miniatures that are actual value for money.

Do yourself a favor, don’t abandon your hobby but instead wean youself away from GW’s teat, you will find the wider world of Wargaming to be a breath of fresh air. I know I did.

A buddy of mine keeps saying he'll quit, but that's got nothing to do with prices, he keeps drawing the WORST possible opponents during tournaments.

I don't know anyone who quit for financial reasons actually, they either got fed up with "too much cheese" or with the hobby scene. I still like the game itself, its a cool game and the rules are getting tighter (and I haven't bought many new models, mostly used :3 )

This can be a bit of a how long is a piece of string question, Wargaming is a very big and varied hobby, the amount of different rules, miniature scales and settings/timeperiods can be mindboggling. The main question is you only interested in Sci-Fi and Fantasy Wargaming or are you interested in dabbling in Historicals?

I would suggest looking at some of the general Wargaming sites and forums, once you have an idea of what is interesting you can find ones specialising in that area.

Try the ‘other sci-fi and fantasy’ and ‘historical games’ sections on here. I also recommend:

www.wargamesillustrated.net/
ilovewargameing.21.forumer.com/

As good general wargaming sites.

These threads always do baffle me.

Worth of my Collection: some 5.000€
# of years playing: 14
# of games in an average week, disregarding tournaments: 4
€€€ per game on average: 1,71€
Duration of average game: 2 to 2.5 hrs
€€€ per hour on average: ~85Cents
Time spent painting: At least as much as playing

Cost of hobby / hour: Some 40 Cents

That's not expensive, as far as hobbies go.
In fact, consider what you pay for beverages & food whilst out gaming. Compare to the cost of going to the movies.

Seriously, while the initial investment could be considered steep,

No flamebait intended, I though the !!!!!!1111111oneoneoneeleven..... Part would be enough to show that I am not really angry / deadserious...

My argument however was honest, I'd like to see the hobbystatistics of people who complain that the GWhobby is to expensive.

I posted why I don't think it is, even at ten times the price of what the hobby costs me, it wouldn't even be 5€ an hour.

Anyone with a job, no matter how gakky paying, can afford this hobby, imho.

Sure, a very patient poor person can afford a mansion at some point. But your post does put the expense into a greater perspective. Higher prices will make some would-be hobbyists reconsider their GW purchases if they're really just buying on impulse.

Yup that is indeed true. Ill admit that iv been close to buying some things purely because its so shiny, luckily a Necron Lord at £8.20 was the only one lol. Given the prices all I will be doing is expanding my armies up to decent levesl, IE CSM to 2k Tau to 1K maybe 1.5k and my newly started High Elves to 2.5k. All of the costs though will more than likely be a box or 2 a month maybe even a box per 2 month depending on the item.

All the impulse buying thoughts are more than gone.

Could not say I have been forced out rather than I chose to walk away first.

I do not feel that some of the online GW community have made me very welcome during the short sojourn, so it has not been a wrench to move on.
My only regret is that I have a ton of unfinished GW minis when I realise I should have bought into other systems and collections.
