We recently started a campaign based on Planetary Empires in which we had 9 people from our local store playing. Out of all 9 players only 1 was not a Space Marine. I play both Eldar and BA and due to the overwelming number of SM in the area, I recently sold my BA army. Is this extremely high concentration of SM just a local aberration?

What is the % of SM players in your area?

Do you mean exclusively space marine players, or players who happen to have any space marine armies at all?

This + are CSM armies to be counted too? Or just loyalists?

Mandorallen turned back toward the insolently sneering baron. 'My Lord,' The great knight said distantly, 'I find thy face apelike and thy form misshapen. Thy beard, moreover, is an offence against decency, resembling more closely the scabrous fur which doth decorate the hinder portion of a mongrel dog than a proper adornment for a human face. Is it possibly that thy mother, seized by some wild lechery, did dally at some time past with a randy goat?' - Mimbrate Knight Protector Mandorallen.

whinyboy space marines are still space marines. Might as well also ask if grey knights players are space marine players, or if space puppy players are space marine players.

I would count the their armies independently. So if the they had 4 armies and 1 was SM then that would count as 25%. I guess I'm asking the total SM army % for your area.

Make sense?

No, I mean if a player has a space marine army, and an imperial guard army, and a tyranid army, and a chaos daemons army, is he a space marine player, a guard player, a bug player, a daemon player?

The Regs are great people.
We have a great selection of factions and with a fair amount of different skill levels.

Same!

I actually go to two different stores-ones a small business general wargaming store where I am one of two players who doesn't play guard, the other being a khorne daemon army, and the one I go to more often is a GW and it has all kinds of SM players.

out of our 12 regulars, only 3 play vanilla marines.

another 3 play GKs(of those, 2 also play Vanilla and one is me)

another 2 players also play CSM.

there is also a BT player.

so, about 50% play marines of one varient or another. although, all that play Marines also have another army they play more often so we actually have a fairly low marine %.

and at the very least, we are using different codices.

The last tourney I was at was fairly indicative. We had 11 teams (22 players). Two Guard, one Tyranid, one Dark Eldar. The remainder were all Space Marine players of one flavour or another. That's around the 80% mark.

The amount of SMs nearby often roll around 25-30% but that opens up to a larger evil. 60% Mech leaf-blower players

But when most of the IG players aren't around it normally is everything non-imperial with a few SM's, excluding Tau, as I'm the only one there using them.

What is so fething bad about being a space marine player anyway. Are we not allowed at certain events, just because we enjoy the benefits of good armor saves, good mobility, and decent shooting skills.

I mean really, Are the space marines not a viable army in the current line of codices? I believe they are. I don't really like being forced to the back of the bus, just because of the army that I've chosen to field. If you don't like the army choice that I've made, then guess what, I don't really give a damn! If you feel like the current SM codex is overpowered or marysue in your opinion, go cry to GW about it, Don't start pointless threads about how your gaming community "segregates" it's players on their choice of army.

Y'know, threads like this really make me proud to be a SM player, an ULTRAMARINE player to be exact. Because now I know that EVERY other army out there is fething terrified to see me across the table from them, I hope, no, pray that I meet you at some random GT or RTT and just wipe the table with my boys in blue. LOL I guess I'll expect another "I hate the space marines" thread soon after that. Would you like a hanky for those tears? LOL

Face it, the space marines are bad-ass, there's nothing you can do about it, short of whining and creating pointless threads on the interwebs. BTW, there's still room for you to get on the winning team here, drop those zero's and get with the hero's, brotha! rant disengaged

It is the 3rd Millennium. For more than a hundred months Games Workshop has sat immobile on the Golden Throne of Nottingham. It is the foremost of wargames by the will of the neckbeards, and master of a million tabletops by the might of their inexhaustible wallets. It is a rotting carcass writhing invisibly with business strategies from the early Industrial Revolution Age. It is the Carrion Lord of the wargaming scene for whom a thousand veteran players are sacrificed every day, so that it may never truly die. Yet even in its deathless state, GW continues its eternal vigilance. Mighty battleforce starter-sets cross the online-store-infested miasma of the internet, the only route between distant countries, their way lit by a draconian retail trade-agreement, the legal manifestation of the GW's will. Vast armies of lawyers give battle in GW's name on uncounted websites. Greatest amongst its soldiers are the Guardians of the IP, the Legal Team, bio-engineered super-donkey-caves. Their comrades in arms are legion: the writing team and countless untested rulebooks, the ever vigilant redshirts, and the writers of White Dwarf, to name only a few. But for all their multitudes, they are barely enough to hold off the ever-present threat from other games, their own incompetence, Based Chinaman - and worse. To support Games Workshop in such times is to spend untold billions. It is to support the cruelest and most dickish company imaginable. These are the tales of those times. Forget the power of sales discounts and Warhammer Fantasy Battle, for so much has been dropped, never to be re-published again. Forget the promise of cheaper digital content and caring about the fanbase, for in the GW HQ there is only profit-seeking, Space Marines and Sigmarines. There is no fun amongst the hobby shops, only an eternity of raging and spending, and the laughter of former employees who left GW to join better companies.

Because Marines are generic, geriatric, boring, balding, old, ornery, screaming or scowling plastic soldiers, and most people that play them try to make them into mary sue armies that are "the onyl treu hereos!" of 40k and the only armies that should ever win any battles ever.

Actually I have no problems with Space MArine models, they're pleasant enough to look at, certainly I like the overall armor design better than that of the Sororitas (if only for the fact that their chestplate looks remotely appropriate for battle).

95% of the people in my area have at least 2 armies. Every person does own Space Marines in some form as one of their armies. It does allow for a lot of flexibility, and we even trade armies around with each other to play. So everybody with multiple armies has space marines, but they also have another race in addition to it. I personally think that's the way to go, giving plenty of options: you can play a vanilla, easy to use army one day, then play a specialized army the next. It's winwin

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

the main complaint is that you often have nothing but space marine players showing up.

90% of Warhammer 40k players will/have had a marine army at some point. this isn't a problem, its when nothing else shows up that things get a little boring.

as a marine player myself, i much prefer killing Xenos and Heretics to other marines. then its a challanging game, but against marines I know the routine and take them apart.
