Well I guess the title sums it up, and if so, when, why, how, what affect does it have?

Yes.
When they are not in a warzone or when they feel like it.
Because they want to.
They take it off, i assume they have some way of doing it.
They are not wearing it any more...
They aren't as strong possibly not as fast and much less bulletproof.

Yes, they can, and have done so in every novel I've read involving Space Marines.

Not sure what you mean by "How much effect does it have?", though. Effect on what?

There is a living creature under that armor, you know. They're not grafted into it.

There are some who walk until their legs fail them and they fall to the ground. I find that respectable.
Then there are those who drag themselves further. I find that admirable.

Well in fantasy fluff, it gives the impression that the warriors of chaos cannot take theirs off. I realize that space marines (besides CSM) are not servants of chaos. Do they look like normal dudes under it or do they have all kinds of implants and crazy stuff hanging off their bodies? and I thought perhaps the armor lent them greater strength and speed.

Their armour gives them more strength... the speed thing is kinda a grey area.
They look pretty normal i guess but they have some obvious enhancements and implants.
SM casual dress is likely robes or something... depends on the chapter actually.

They can, and occasionally do... just not often.

Also, Marines look pretty damned deformed if they aren't clothed. Keep in mind that Marines are essentially drugged up, oversized mutants (whom happen to be sanctioned because they were originally created by the Emperor), exceptional soldiers they may be.

Well in Space Wolf novels most CSM are essentially posessed armor that has vulnerabilities like humans, dont ask how it works XD

My impression of a Space Marine out of armor has always been an uber beefy dude lol

I was thinking it might be similar to what monastic orders wear. something simple with a cool hood. I can see the ultramarines wearing togas, and the space wolves being clad in furs.

arent they hyper-intelligent though?

Uhh I seem to recall in Graham McNeill novels Ultramarine casualwear is pretty much loose tunic +trousers or a robe

Most other SM go for the whole monastic thing AFAIK...

No, they're no more intelligent than any normal human.

They just have, biologically, a better memory and a bit faster reaction speed. Doesn't mean they're more intelligent... a computer has faster reaction speed and easier memory recall than most humans, but it's not intelligent.

nothing, I was just responding to the drugged mutant thing, it makes them sound kind of dumb.

No, I view them as what they are. Genetically enhanced, chemically enhanced, hormonally enhanced supersoldiers, with various extra organs implanted in themselves. None of which are stated to increase their intelligence.

Disclaimer, I know nothing about the human brain, or how it works.

im not going to try to offer a pedantic deff of what intelligence is, but isnt having a faster reaction speed, (which in my opinion means your brain is processing faster than the next guys) similar to intelligence?

As I said, computers have faster reaction speed than humans, but they're still usually considered less intelligent.

I agree with that. So they are just stupid faster? makes sense.

No, they just react faster. But they don't react more intelligently. Intelligence in general is vaguely defined, and there's many kinds of intelligence, but in general it's the ability to acquire and apply knowledge and skills. Just having a good memory and reaction speed doesn't grant this, you also have to have excellent judgment on HOW to apply the knowledge and skills in a wide variety of different situations.

Except for their selection process, which would weed out the duller candidates.

Not necessarily. You don't have to be brilliant to be a good soldier. In fact, many smarter people are not physically capable enough to become Marines.

I dont disagree. However, I submit the SM selection process is a bit more complex than seeing who can do the most pushups.
Additionally, many physically capable people are not smart enough to make good soldiers.

True, but given that they recruit children, these aren't exactly the most mentally and physically developed people to begin with, so that's hard to judge.

Which is no different than the Schola Progenium 'recruiting' children of slain Imperial servants.

Everyone, Astartes or not, starts off the same. It's the training and enhancements that alter the Astartes from the rest of humanity.
