Subject: Final Fantasy 7 remake (yeah this is infamous)

Well it was bound to be posted eventually. Recently I've been looking at lots of final fantasy games, trying to fill the void thats been left now that I've sold the ps3 and my only FF game (XIII). Now from what I've gathered FFVII was apparently one of the best, but also one of the most hated. Now theres been plenty of talk for a remake, which is now all but confirmed. The area of argument is which console its coming to. Now a lot of people have been, understandably, hearing rumours about a ps3 remake. However, I've found some "confirmed" news that the remake will be a launch title for the wii you and this was more recently posted than any of the ps3 newsfeeds. Now I could understand it being released for the ps3 completley; I'd be dissapointed but understanding nonetheless. I do like the sound of the possible remake for the wii you and was wondering what other peoples views were. And please, no Sephiroth/Cloud fanboys spouting their addoration

I'd certainly like to play it.
I do hold it as the most overrated game ever just ahead of Halo Reach but I do find it interesting. All that stops me is the horrible graphics of the PSX version.

In my opinion, all they need do is update the graphics and fix the ending. The storyline itself and general gameplay doesn't even need to be touched.
Being a fan of the FF series I'd still buy it even if they did completely redo the whole thing.

I think this would actually get me back into Final Fantasy games.
I made the mistake of purchasing FF13 when I bought my PS3...yeah.
While it may be an overrated game, that doesn't mean it's a bad game. In my opinion, the story in FF6 was better, but that game really doesn't have the following that 7 had.

Tepid might be too harsh. It was a good game, but it's not the best game. Not even the best game of the Final Fantasy series, really. I liked 5 so much more. A remake is believable though, as Square's trend at this point is, rather than release GOOD new games, only to rerelease the classics with a fancy new interface. That being said, I do have FF2 and Chrono Trigger on my DS.

What's all this about a "confirmed" remake? Last I heard (January 18), S-E was just getting around to canning Agito (now Type-O) and saying Versus would be at E3 (it wasn't). Neither game has a NA release date (Type-O may never have one) and FFXIII-2 doesn't even have a firm date; we've heard "probably January." The idea that a FFVII remake is "all but confirmed" seems like wishful thinking. As to the game itself: it was utterly excellent. Having said that, I'll just qualify by reminding everyone that games like FFVII invariably are better in our memories than if we were to sit down and play them again. I last played FFVII in 2008 or 2009 and really enjoyed it so I can say the memory-to-reality differential on this game is not very wide. Regarding FFVII "being hated," here's the rub: it's internet-fashionable to run down FFVII. The same thing, on a much smaller scale, has happened to FFXIII. But that's pretty typical for the internet, where the geek M.O. of bashing something that is universally acclaimed to seem especially cynical/cool/genius is par for the course. Act like that in real life and you're a social outcast; act like that on the internet and you're an idol to hundreds, thousands, perhaps even millions (on 4chan) of twelve year olds. Automatically Appended Next Post: Mr. Self Destruct wrote:I do hold it as the most overrated game ever just ahead of Halo Reach but I do find it interesting.
I don't get it -- they're both great games. Yes, Halo Reach was tremendously hyped but can you really hold that against the game? I mean, that's advertising. I'm no fan of the Halo series, although I certainly understand why they're successful, but even I loved Halo Reach. FFVII wasn't hyped to nearly the extent that games are these days: think back to MGS4, holy cow -- or GoW3 more recently. Every "blockbuster" release is touted as the "most-anticipated release of all time" (quotation from Square-Enix regarding FFXIII). So you must not be referring to the "hype" when it comes to FFVII. In that case, you must mean the commercial and critical acclaim. Personally, I think it's pretty clear why this game has sold 10 million copies in the last 13 years and why it continues to be a powerful franchise unto itself (Dirge of Cerberus, Advent Children, Crisis Core). What's not so clear, or rather easy to remember (even for those who actually remember it), is that FFVII was a huge milestone. It was the right game for the right time and place. It represents a sense of innovation that no FF game since has been able to match.

FFIV is my favorite, actually. FFIII/VI was incredible but it did not introduced the "big story" to FF or console RPGs. Granted, IV did not release on our shores until later so VI seemed more important to us than it really was.
I don't totally get what you mean by "only popular because it was on the PS1." Are you referring to the cutscenes?

There's more to Final Fantasy VII than cutscenes, the story and gameplay are good too. Also, can I just say, I completely agree with Manchu. The internet always hate on what's popular because it's "cool". But honestly, FFVII was and still is a great game. Also, the same applies to FFXIII. It wasn't the best in the series, but it was still good IMO. I can't believe some of the ridiculous complaints people have for it, saying it's bad because it's different. Well, when you make 13 games in a series and none of them are different, then people would just complain that they keep making the same game over and over. At least they're better than the Call of Duty series, where they do it every single year. I could go in depth as to why it isn't as bad as people say on the internet, but this isn't the place for that.

I really love FFXIII, as I've discussed elsewhere in this subforum. I honestly can't see what people don't like about it. It was no more linear than any other FF game (or JRPG for that matter) and it showed actual innovation in the combat system -- something FF is not known for. I think it's the pinnacle of this-gen JRPGs and really look forward to FFXIII-2. Lightning is one of the best characters in all video game history, IMO, and I am glad to see that S-E is responding to popular demand that she get more screen time. I get that all of this can come down to "a matter of taste" -- I don't like either of VIII or XII although I know both were big successes and have their fans in the legions. But FFVII is not -- as far as I can tell -- hated for any reason inherent to itself: gameplay, story, graphics. Rather, it seems to be hated by some people because of what other people think about it: a hundred people say "I love it" so, of course, one person says in response "I hate it."

Well the haters can rejoice: AFAIK, there's no reason to think a FFVII remake is any closer to reality now than it was at PS3's launch.

My bad didn't realise there was a video game forum
So yh, only FF games I've played are 3 and 13, and I only completed 13 So I dont really have much of a range to decide which is the best, which is why I'm really hoping this game comes to wii u, just so I get a chance to try it out.

In order for an FFVII remake to be successful, they’d have to redo the entire game in my opinion. I think it would be a waste if they just tweaked the graphics and added an extra dungeon like the other FF remakes.
Ideally, everything would have to be redone. Story and cut scenes, would need to tweaked to be deeper and more engaging. Character art style would need to be redone to be more realistic like the later FF titles (VIII, X etc). Gameplay would also need to be tweaked as well (materia system, although fun, was way to grindtastic and this is coming from a VIII junction system fan).

Square’s ideal plans for a FFVII remake would be to redo it to be like XIII in the sense that it would have similar graphics, voice acting etc. That’s not to say that a VII remake would be as bad XIII as the story and non linear gameplay would ensure it would not turn out like XIII

I think you’re referring to linear gameplay in a different fashion to what I am. I’m using linear in a literal sense. XIII had linear gameplay in the sense that the majority of the player’s time was spent exploring a giant corridor. VII was non linear in the sense that player’s got to explore a wide a variety of different environments (i.e. not a giant corridor).

I can't believe they are actually going through with this. Its sad that Square can't get past this game and keeps coming back to it even though the series is already at 14. The game doesn't need to be remade. FF7 was good for its time. If it was remade now it'd be a sub par RPG when compared to all of the RPG's that are out now even if it does have updated graphics. The battle system would have to be updated as well. It can't remain as it is unless Square is going for the nostalgia factor. If that's the case it won't be all that exciting unless you want to see FF7 in new graphics.

@Red Comet: Those are some great points and great follow-up to candy.man's points above.
Still, I don't think fans or detractors of FFVII have much to worry about with regard to a remake. I think OP is being a little optimistic about the chances of this happening in the near or even distant future -- for the very points you laid out.

Red Comet raised a good point that I neglected to mention in my post. VII was a good game for it’s time and a lot of the hard core fans tend to view the idea of a VII remake with rose tinted sunglasses. I can’t see a PS3 console remake being a success unless the game is extensively reworked to meet modern standards.
Personally I reckon Sony will go for a quick and dirty PSP remake (with slightly tweaked graphics/dialogue and an additional dungeon).

Yep: when you think about it, all of these re-releases have been for portable systems. They're awesome games but I can't see grinding for a bazillion hours in a PS3 game. Frankly, it was pretty tired on PS2 as well -- looking at you, FFXII.

I have been a fan of Final Fantasy games since the first ever (yes I am dating myself a bit with that one), but I am one that does think 7 should be remade. Once we got past 9, FF games have taken a different turn. Granted, some would argue that the later games are good and I am not one to say they are not, but they just don't "feel" like Final Fantasy to me. I loved 7 because it was different yet still maintained all the things that I loved about Final Fantasy games.
