Hey guys I have a question. How did you pick your army and why? I am just wondering for new people to the game or people who would like to start new armies.
-Thanks

Well I knew I wanted to make my own Space marine Chapter, so after I made the fluff I chose which codex fit their fluff the most. Turned out to be BA

Well the first army I decided to play was Tyranids back in 3rd ed because the models looked good. Then when I had about 3000 points I decided to get some Deathwing Termies after reading the fluff. Then after reading more and more fluff over time I keep buying Dark Angels and there you have it I have 10000 points lol.

As for my other armies. My Steel Legion IG was mostly purchased in the Battle for Armageddan Campaign when they were really available. My Tau were aqcuired from a friend for very cheap. And my newest 40k army, Thousand Sons have been started due to their fluff and the fact the models look sweet.

Dark Angels 9500 Pts
Steel Legion IG 3500 Pts
Orks 2000 Pts
High Elves 2500 Pts

A friend of mine talked me into trying 40K a few years ago.

I chose my Orks because they're goofy and fun.

I chose my Sisters/Witch Hunters for the nice models.

That's about it.

I hated the new chaos codex when it first came out and went for the new space marine codex when it came out. I decided to make my own American chapter about a year later.

You are not free whose liberty is won by the rigour of other, more righteous souls. Your are merely protected. Your freedom is parasitic, you suck the honourable man dry and offer nothing in return. You who have enjoyed freedom, who have done nothing to earn it, your time has come. This time you will stand alone and fight for yourselves. Now you will pay for your freedom in the currency of honest toil and human blood.

I walked into a GW looking for loose bases to put Reaper figures on, knowing exactly this much about 40k: It's grimdark, there are Space Marines, space elves, space Orks, and other space things, and everyone fights everyone else. I glanced at the new Grey Knights, saw 'daemon-fighting psychic space marines,' and picked up a box for the variety of painting them after doing like two dozen fantasy figures in the preceding months. Read more, decided I wanted to try playing, and the philosophy of the Grey Knights appealed to me. Noble aims, ruthlessly pragmatic methods.

Then I started orks because they kant spel gud and are unburdened by drama in the grimdarkness of the far future. Orks are the lolcats of the 41st millenium.

One unbreakable shield against the coming darkness, One last blade forged in defiance of fate.

I chose Tyranids because Tyranid Warriors look cool. I chose Slaanesh Chaos Space Marines because they would be fun to model and paint.

I really like the look of Eldar vehicles. Plus they were the fast ones and that appealed to me - I was a Dwarf player in WHFB. Got tired of everything moving so much faster than I did.

I started as a CSM player with a focus on nurgle, mostly because I just liked the old school True grit of death guard. But after a period of null play I switch to my army of choice: Necrons, as they fit my play style and their fluff is spot on.

First Army was Iron Warriors Choas Space Marines, loved their fluff and color-scheme, (plus almost everyone else in my group was a loyalist Space Marine Player, so being the evil counterpart was fun.)

Now i'm collecting Imperial Guard, and thinking about starting a true Armored Company, as it was the Tanks that lured me in, and having 10 of them in a 1750 army would be awesome.

I chose Tau for their looks, then went to IG because of the Fluff. I like the idea of thousands of humans with very little in the way of protection standing up to whatever the Galaxy could throw at it.

I do not discriminate....all races are equally worthless....

Can't believe i forgot about that, it just screams badass far louder than any super-solider doing the same.

Exactly my story too.

Fell in love with the Mordians because I also thoroughly enjoy polishing my boots, having a spotless uniform and marching up and down the square. I wish I was joking about that too.

I was never into 40k then my b/f started running a Rogue Trader game and I was playing an Arch Militant who was rescued from being a penal legionnaire so I read the Last Chances to get a feel for it.

Fell in love with the Guard.

Same here. In wargames, RPGs, and so on I always lean towards "mundane" charatcers, who don't necessarily have magical powers or superhuman abilities but have to rely on normal human qualities. ALso, the Guard vehicles annd style of play appeal to me greatly.

I also play Orks, partly for similar reasons, though I mainly chose them for the models. Also, their worldview is so much different to the other armies. Orks actually have a very positive outlook on life, it's just that they express it through thuggery, looting and destruction...

Driven away from WH40K by rules bloat and the expense of keeping up, now interested in smaller model count games and anything with nifty mechanics.

My first army were the space wolves in 4th editon. Started with them cause I loved the fluff and the idea space vikings. Then I started orks because they just looked like so much fun. Then chaos space marines because I decided I wanted to do a fallen angels army. Then I started a Tau force for something a little different. A shooty army instead of a cc army. Then I started an IG army for the fact that they are normal humans and stand up to everything thrown at them and just say Feth you universe. Then a dark Eldar army for the idea of space pirates. Now Im starting a Necron army for the fun of it and for another army that just wants to destroy everything.

Before I started playing 40K I had read the GG novels and started Guard. Then I started BA, this was WD codex days not the rag that claims to be a codex. then I moved to Chaos, I mean who doesn't like these guys . then moving back redone the BA as imperial fists and am currently redoing my guard as a mech company afetr getting 51 Stromtroopers for £13 off a friend.

Currently debating whether to study for my exams or paint some Deathwing

Many moons ago when Necrons were nothing but an android on a space crusade board I got into the game known as Warhammer 40,000. From that introduction to painting little models in Heroquest and Space Crusade it naturally led to 40k as a friend got the game one day (2nd Edition).

My friend was already heading down the path of big bulky power armour and bolters spewing rapid death in hulks festooned with orcs, gretchin, chaos space marines and the odd dreadnought. So he naturally picked Space Marines (Dark Angels) and then later settled on Imperial Guard (Personally I think he just wanted an excuse to have a large tank, an assassin on combat drugs killing everything and grey knights dropping in to demoralise me further).

I however got the old goff orks and gretchin, which is who I started with. Heroes need villains and I always liked villains more, they have the better stories, more absurd weaponry and if they fail I can blame various minions instead of myself. So off I went and aquired some more ork ladz, a wierdboy and a proper ork dreadnought.

Another friend settled on Space Wolves (Yay, more incredibly hard to kill marines )

However being young the lure of the new and shiny is always there, and Eldar shone through like a beacon of hope at getting past power armour. So they became my army for a while until a shadow fell across the warp and some large bugs invaded my home claiming they had a hivefleet that needed feeding. So this medley of orks, eldar & tyranids formed.

Much later when 3rd edition rolled up my two fellow generals fell to other hobbies, but a new buddy wanted to get in on the game so I started on 3rd edition with him. At first I stuck with Orks (Deathskulls had become vaguely my main clan colours) as he got into the game using ... you guessed it Space Marines (Blood Angels this time so at least it was a differnt color scheme.) After a while I needed somethign new, (My interst in eldar had diminshed ages before and my Tyranids were basically a lot of large monsters and no effective ground troops). So I cast my eye across the armies and settled on the army that became my 2nd main, Chaos Space Marines (Iron Warriors) With a little help from nurgle and khorne these guys had fun battling the Blood Angels until I stopped the gaming part of the hobby.

Today I mostly paint, and it's still mostly leaning to the side of evil.
----

I never played Warhammer Fantasy, no one I knew really played it except one chap who mostly ended up borrowing my tyranids in 40k, lol. However purely from an aesthetic view point I do like the Undead and so when it changed to Vampire Counts (Instead of just lumping all undead together) I formed a small undead rising of some skeletons, zombies, a necormancer, a wraith and a vampire. So yeah if I ever play warhammer fantasy my army selection is based purely on liking hammer horror fluff.

Oh and in Necromunda it's always been Delaques, sneaky, scavenging bald people in trenchcoats looking to stab you in the back .. wait a sec that sounds like ork deathskulls
