This is a commission I have just finished for a very patient client in Australia. I've been trying to get it done for 5 months but mother nature had something to say. A very shallow 6.6 quake, many thousands of aftershocks and a broken house later I have finally completed them.

The client wanted a winter scheme. The infantry have only been issued with white winter coats; they wear normal fatigues underneath. The tanks would be grey but have been whitewashed and seen much action. I used the hairspray technique for this.

The models required much work to assemble but are totally worth the effort. Many were repaired after a significant aftershock knocked them to the floor!

I have built a light box and experimented with daylight fluorescents. Still getting a handle on taking good photos. Let me know if they are up to standard.

Anyway, comments and critiques are highly appreciated!

cheers
Earl

[Update 21st of September] - I tried to re-upload new images onto a new Flickr account and replace the links here but found out Flickr and Dakka don't like each other and they all broke. I've re-uploaded the pics to Dakka now. I also took the opportunity to fix some colour issues and add a tiny bit of sharpening.

My tutorial of sorts can be found on page two of this thread or here: http://ferrus-workshops.blogspot.com/2011/09/krieg-painting-and-weathering-tips-and.html

The weathering on those tanks is fantastic, very realistic looking, how did you achieve that? Very impressive job overall, a nice cohesive looking force.

Beyond epic, just..fantastic man. I've got a huge thing for Death Korps and you make them even better. The vehicular weathering is also amazing, it actually has depth and looks...REAL.

I'm loving the worn look to that whole force, really working on getting a more realistic look to my paint jobs, and those are some of the best I have seen, impart your wisdom! How did you do the vehicles?

I've never particularly appreciated the aesthetic of individual Guardsmen, but this really won me over. Great attention to detail. And like redbristles said, everything is very cohesive. This is one hell of an army. Your client should be very pleased.

Gorgeous figures. Absolutely adoring the way you did the vehicles for this force, any chance you'd be willing to write a tutorial or something? They look beautiful - and well done on the white for the Guardsmen. The thought of having so many white fatigues to try and paint spot-on would be beyond daunting, but you've done it perfectly.

I LOVE these!

The tanks look amazing. It reminds of the Germans at Battle of the Bulge from Band of Brothers, with the winter scheme. Except, yknow, 40k... and nuclear winter most likely haha.

FANTASTIC!

Wow guys, thanks for the comments and praise. That really makes me feel great!

I guess i'll be doing a tutorial then. The techniques weren't too hard, just took time.

Just a few quick notes :

I used a Paasche Talon airbrush to undercoat them all with Vallejo german grey and then did a 50/50 mix with white, followed by a final white coat. I used the zenithal method. The ability of the airbrush to lay down thin coats really helped getting a good white. I did do a final brush highlight with white.

The hairspray techniques is easy but it depends on a few key factors to get it right. I'll detail that in my tutorial.

The mud was a mix of craft paints, texture paste and sifted soil. Made sure to get a natural colour.

I'll get started on the tutorial tonight.

Probably 2 to 3 months not including all the delays. I do this as a part time thing. This took longer than a normal because of the assembly and repairs plus testing out some new techniques.

Got some army shots done:

Also, with the tutorial, I don't have much spare time right now. Would just a text one be ok? I don't really have anything I can do process shots on right now nor do I have the time. I can do an in depth written tutorial though. I can also point out links to other people who have done great photo tutorials. I found the Imperial Armour masterclass book most helpful even though I already knew most of the techniques.

Those tanks look fantastic, I'm wondering why you left the bases black on the infantry? I'm new to painting but to my eyes atlease it kinda takes away the snow feel. I think a brown would of mixed well with the models well. I'm sorry for nit picking just wondering if there was a reason. I really am impressed by your work.
